NAPA, Bureau Veritas to Enable 3D Model Usage for Class Approvals

Maritime software, services and data analysis provider NAPA and testing, inspection and certification group Bureau Veritas (BV) are partnering to enable more effective and widespread use of 3D models in the class approval process.The two parties said they seek to improve the overall efficiency and accuracy of future vessel design and solve the current challenges associated with 2D drawings. While naval architects use 3D models to design ships, the assessment of these designs by class ensure they meet relevant safety and compliance specifications

KDI inks deal with Rocktree to 'Digitalize' Bulk Carrier

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) signed a contract with Singapore-based transshipment company Rocktree to provide its Vessel Insight technology for the Supramax size Bulk carrier modified to an Offshore Floating Terminal (OFT) RT LEO. Together with the Vessel Insight Customer Success team, Rocktree plans to develop dashboards to measure cargo moved in tons/hour, fuel consumption, monitor emissions and benchmark its vessels.“Historically, the Bulk carrier segment has been a bit slow in terms of digitalization compared to Tankers and Offshore

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) signed a contract to deliver its Vessel Insight infrastructure to Güngen Denizcilik ve Ticaret A.ƞ. (Güngen), a Turkish-owned and registered shipping company which operates a fleet of six Suezmax crude oil-tankers. Güngen will deploy KDI's Vessel Insight to help reduce emissions and optimize fleet performance.Güngen’s immediate goal for installing Vessel Insight is to benchmark the vessels within its fleet, providing the foundation for increased fuel savings and reduced emissions.

Wasaline Green Newbuild RoPax Moves Forward

The maritime software, services and data analysis provider NAPA has announced the signing of a new contract with the northernmost year-round ferry, Wasaline, for its newbuilding Aurora Botnia.When it launches in 2021 the Aurora Botnia will be the world’s first LNG/LBG battery ship with pods under the vehicle deck, as well as the world’s most environmentally friendly RoPax vessel.Under the agreement, NAPA will provide Wasaline with its industry benchmark software applications, NAPA Emergency Computer, which delivers unmatched integrated emergency decision support, and NAPA Loading Computer, which optimizes vessel load while minimizing stress and safety risk.NAPA Loading Computer and NAPA Emergency Computer have been approved by all major classification societies.Peter Ståhlberg

Aker Solutions, Siemens Join Forces To Strengthen Digital Offerings

Norway's Aker Solutions has forged an alliance with the German technology giant Siemens to further develop digital offerings in engineering, operations and services.The global engineering company based in Oslo said that the collaboration focuses on the creation of software applications and joint service offerings including the development of industrial digital twins that will drive efficiency throughout the entire plant lifecycle.In addition, the companies will further develop specific offerings for the oil and gas sector based on Siemens' Comos engineering platform. Carnival Unveils Miami Fleet Operations Center

Carnival Cruise Line has previewed its new Fleet Operations Center (FOC) in Miami, the largest and most advanced in the cruise industry. The 35,000-square-foot facility is custom-designed for hands-on, around-the-clock monitoring and support of the line's 26 cruise ships. The Carnival Cruise Line FOC is the first facility of its kind in South Florida and features a state-of-the-art tracking and data-analysis platform that enables real-time information sharing between Carnival ships and specialized shoreside teams designed to support fleet operations. It was unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony and interactive demonstration of its most innovative new high-tech features, which is anchored by a 74-foot-long video wall composed of 57 LED screens.

Delgado’s Simulator Suite is comprised of three interactive Full Mission Bridge simulators. Simulators are used for Wheelhouse Proficiency Management classes to provide scenarios on navigating waterways on different types of vessels. Simulators can be programmed to run three vessels at the same time, so that students in all three wheel houses can communicate and interact with each other. Offen Group Deploys DNV GL Energy Efficiency Training

The three shipping companies of the Offen Group, CPO Container, CPO Tanker and CPO Bulker, have decided to implement DNV GL’s e-learning course “Energy Efficiency on Board” across their entire fleet. The E-learning tool, developed by DNV GL’s Maritime Academy, enables users to identify potential savings in a simple way and to implement them in ship operation. "As a large modern shipping company, we are always interested in innovative concepts and are constantly working to further extend our high quality standards in all areas," says Dietmar Thiem, Technical Director at CPO Container. The fleet of the Offen Group currently comprises 67 container ships, 8 bulk carriers and 26 tankers.

SENER Presents Study on Implementation of CAD System

At the annual COMPIT conference, the SENER engineering and technology group presented a technical/economic study on the implementation of a CAD system in a shipyard and, in particular, the FORAN System, developed by SENER. The event took place in Lecce, Italy, on May 9, 10 and 11. COMPIT is an international conference focusing on software applications and information technologies that have been well received within the marine sector. The event is always held in Europe. Rodrigo Pérez, from SENER’s Marine Department, presented the article ‘Learning Curve and ROI in the Implementation of a CAD System in a Generic Shipbuilding Environment’. The article provides an analysis of the FORAN system learning curve in a generic shipyard.

LR, ABS Join Forces to Deliver New Generation CSR software

Common Structural Rules Software LLC, (CSRS) a joint venture company formed by Lloyd's Register (LR) and ABS, has released new software tools for meeting the requirements of the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR), which entered into force on 1 July 2015. Developed from the technical strengths of LR and ABS, version 2.5 of the CSR Prescriptive Analysis and the new CSR Finite Element (FE) Analysis software, allow assessment of whole vessel structures, including new bulk carrier and oil tanker designs. Both class societies will use these new tools to evaluate new designs to the CSR. "I am pleased that the strategy laid out more than a decade ago is achieving our objectives," says LR’s Marine Director Tom Boardley.

SevenCs Supports MariGreen Project

SevenCs is part of the EU INTERREG V A cross-border project “MariGreen” to support the maritime industry in the transition towards more efficient, greener and more sustainable shipping. The MariGreen project develops innovations for greener and low-emission shipping and supports in particular small and medium enterprises. There are 12 innovation projects behind "MariGreen" that are dealt with by a total of 59 partners located in the Netherlands and Germany. Alternative fuel for ships, Wind Energy Systems for freight and passenger shipping, improvement of logistics operations, resource-efficient ship operations and safety issues in nautical education and training are among the main topics. SevenCs engages in the MariGreen work stream “Wind propulsion in commercial shipping”.
