Crowley Maritime Corporation has appointed Paul S. Manzi as the company’s new vice president of safety, security, quality and environmental stewardship (SSQE), effective July 1. Manzi, who will be based in Jacksonville and report to Carl Fox, senior vice president, corporate services, succeeds Charlie Nalen, who is retiring after 36 years of service to Crowley. Crowley Maritime Corporation was recognized today with a 2015 AMS Safety Award by American Maritime Safety, Inc. (AMS) for the company’s implementation of a drug and alcohol awareness program for crewmembers that perform safety-sensitive functions on vessels calling U.S. ports. This program contains various non-industry standard items, above and beyond the requirements including: searches that prohibit all types of substances that may impair safety; specialized online refresher training; and development of an onboard collector’s guide to provide step-by-step instructions in the event a drug collection must be performed aboard one of Crowley’s owned or managed vessels. “Crowley evinces a determination to not just meet, but exceed U.S.

Crowley Maritime Corp. has been honored with the 2015 Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman’s Earth Day Award in recognition of the organization’s companywide environmental stewardship initiatives. The announcement was made during a Professional Environmental Management Association luncheon held in Seal Beach, Calif., earlier this week. FMC Chairman Mario Cordero will present a plaque commemorating the award to Crowley during a future recognition ceremony in Washington D.C.

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) has announced that its workforce has achieved a major safety milestone: 10 million hours worked without an OSHA Day Away From Work Case (DAFWC). Of those hours, Crowley contributed towards working 20 percent of them, or 2 million hours, safely. This means that since June 2009, no TAPS worker, including the more than 225 Crowley employees, has been injured to the extent that they missed a day of work. For more than 30 years Crowley has provided tanker escort, response ship assist and vessel operations for TAPS operator Alyeska Pipeline Services Co.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that it has restructured its petroleum distribution and contract services group, consolidating all Alaska operations under Craig Tornga, vice president. Tornga, who will remain in Anchorage and will continue reporting to Rocky Smith, senior vice president and general manager, will continue to manage Alaska's petroleum distribution and fuel sales but will now also manage tanker assist and escort services in Valdez and Prince William Sound, Alaska, and energy support services on Alaska's North Slope.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Charlie Nalen has been named general manager of the company's Valdez operation. In his new position, Nalen will be responsible for the entirety of Crowley's marine operations in Valdez including ship assist and escort services for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS). He will report to Bruce Harland, vice president of contract services, Alaska and will relocate from Jacksonville, Fla. to Valdez. Nalen has held a number of related positions during his 29 years with Crowley.

Tornga, based in Anchorage, is a member of Crowley's Energy and Marine Services group, which is part of the corporation's Contract Services segment. Created more than a decade ago, the Thomas Crowley Trophy award honors employees with outstanding performance, whose dedication, leadership, initiative and productivity most clearly reflect those of the company's founder. Charlie Nalen, vice president, Environmental Affairs Safety & Quality for Crowley Maritime Corp. was honored for his service with the 1999 Thomas Crowley Trophy, which is the company's highest honor. Nalen, who is the second employee to receive the honor this year, is credited with helping to establish an environmental management system, as well as spearheading and fast-tracking ISO and ISM certification processes for Crowley operations and vessels on both coasts and internationally. Prior to his 20-year tenure with the company, Nalen was the director of Vocational Education for the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, a seafarers International Union (SIU) training facility in Pitney Point, Md.

Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.

The U. S. Coast Guard presented Crowley Marine Services with the William M. Benkert Award, which is the premier national award recognizing excellence in marine environmental protection. The award was presented by Rear Admiral R.C. North, Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, U.S. Conference in La Jolla, Calif. As part of its focus on safety, Crowley Maritime Corporation announced today that Alex Sweeney has been named vice president of safety and health. Sweeney will relocate from Seattle to Anchorage and will report to Charlie Nalen, vice president, environmental, safety and quality assurance (ESQA). In his new position, Sweeney will continue to promote and develop the safety culture of Crowley's west coast operations including the company's extensive footprint in the Alaska marine and petroleum services industry. Sweeney joined Crowley in 1980 and has over 25 years experience in marine operations for Crowley on the east and west coasts.
