Itochu-led Ammonia as Marine Fuel Study Attracts 23 New Firms

Japan-based Itochu Corporation has this week formed a joint study framework of 23 companies and organizations with the objective of collaboratively discussing common issues in pursuit of the utilization of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel, Bureau Veritas said Friday.The aim of the Joint Study Framework is to verify and organize common issues regarding the use of ammonia as a maritime fuel, which is a new challenge for maritime stakeholders. Groningen Seaports, Vopak Push Solar Power

The Dutch tank storage company Royal Vopak,  Groningen Seaports and Whitehelm Capital announce their intention to jointly invest in a 27 MW solar park. The solar photovoltaic field will be one of the largest currently in the Netherlands.The new solar park will be situated on 19 ha of land adjacent to Vopak Terminal Eemshaven, land which is currently already leased by the terminal. The produced green electricity will be made available for local use in Groningen and Vopak terminals.Based on the available energy infrastructure, Groningen and especially Eemshaven are considered strategic locations for production and storage of renewable energy in the Netherlands.

Maersk, Vopak to Launch 2020 Fuel Bunkering in Rotterdam

A.P. Moller - Maersk and Royal Vopak, an independent tank storage operator active in the heart of Rotterdam’s bunker environment, have agreed to this first joint initiative which will cater for circa 20% of Maersk global demand, enabling A.P. Moller - Maersk to deliver approximately 2.3mt per year.As an anchor tenant in the modified facilities this agreement will enable Maersk, as well as any other interested third parties, to supply vessels trading with and inside Europe with compliant fuel. “We trust that this initiative will put to rest some of the concerns the industry has on fuel availability as well as secure our continued competitiveness in the market,” says Niels Henrik Lindegaard, Head of Maersk Oil Trading, a division of A.P.

Houston Ship Channel Closed after Benzene Spill

A section of the Houston Ship Channel has been closed following the release of approximately 500 gallons of benzene from the tanker Maritime Jingan while moored at Vopak Terminal Thursday afternoon. The U.S. Coast Guard said it is responding to the incident along with the Harris County Hazardous Material Response Team. At approximately 12 p.m., Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a call from Vopak Terminal personnel that benzene had been spilled on the Maritime Jingan and that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department had also been notified. Vessel Traffic Service issued a closure of between the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing and Carpenters Bayou effective at 12:23 p.m. The leak has been secured, and the cause is under investigation.

Oil Spill at Port of Los Angeles

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a report of an oil spill in the Los Angeles Harbor, Thursday morning. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach command center received a report at 10:48 a.m. of an unknown quantity of oily-water mixture coming from a holding tank residing on the Vopak Terminal. Coast Guard investigators from Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach are currently investigating the report. A majority of the oil released has been reported as being contained on the pier, however, some of the oil water mixture entered the water. Oil spill response organizations including the National Response Corporation, Ocean Blue, and Patriot Environmental are conducting clean-up operations using oil skimmers and absorbent pads.

Aegean to Acquire $11mln Fuel & Storage Contracts

Benzene & Pygas storage Upgraded at Vopak, Rotterdam

Vopak Terminal Botlek has completed the upgrading of its Benzene and Pygas storage capacity. The new Benzene and Pygas tanks and infrastructure meet the latest customer and regulatory requirements and further reinforce the Aromatics trading hub in the Port of Rotterdam. Total (seabound) throughput of BTX and pygas in the extensive Rotterdam cluster adds up to almost 3 million tonnes. This includes handling at terminals, production plants and ship-ship transhipment. With the upgrade, Vopak Terminal Botlek offers 56,000 cbm of dedicated storage capacity for Benzene and Pygas in fourteen tanks of 4,000 cbm each. This includes three switch tanks, which can be used for both Pygas and Benzene. Another three tanks are dedicated to Pygas, the remaining eight tanks are dedicated to Benzene.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners inks Letter of Intent to study development of a a 28-acre site on Pier T. The project is to construct a deep-water terminal for crude oil and petroleum products including gasoline, and the port has chosen Vopak Terminals North America Inc. to study the development. The preliminary agreement between the Port and Vopak sets basic deal terms and green-lights an environmental impact study of a “liquid bulk” terminal for petroleum tanker ships.

Total Charters in New Barge Capacity in Germany

Total Marine Fuels in Germany has chartered in additional barge capacity to meet growing demand for fuel oil from customers in Hamburg and along the Kiel Canal. Total is the main bunker supplier in the Kiel Canal, and is currently selling in excess of 350,000 metric tons of fuel per year in the region. It has had the double-hulled, 1,450-ton capacity bunker barge Elbingerode on charter since the beginning of 2007. Now, in response to continuing increases in demand, it has supplemented that with the charter of the Spandau DT61, which has capacity for about 1,100 tons of heavy fuel oil and 100 tons of gasoil. Ship Collides with Barge

A chemical tanker collided with a moored barge near the San Jacinto Monument on Dec. 15. The Captain of the Port Houston/Galveston closed the ship channel from San Jacinto Port Dock 4 to Light 133 due to oil spilled from the collision. The tanker Ievoli Splendor , a 544-ft. chemical tanker, was mooring up at the Vopak Terminal in Deer Park, Texas, when the collision with the Kirby Marine barge happened causing a spill of heavy grade fuel oil C5. Containment boom has been deployed around the ship and the dock to contain the fuel/oil. The extent of damage to the ship and barge is not known. The Ievoli Splendor is presently moored at San Jacinto Port Dock 5. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Houston and the Texas General Land Office are responding to the incident.
