The Austal shipyard in Vietnam has ordered 4 × 16V175D-MM engines, delivering 2,720 kW at 1,800 rpm for water-jet propulsion, in connection with the building of a high-speed catamaran ferry for customer, the Degage Group. The 66-meter, 574-passenger ferry is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2023 and will operate as the Apetahi Express between Pape’ete (Tahiti) and Vaitape (Bora Bora) in French Polynesia. MAN Energy Solutions announced Thursday it has won the contract to supply complete propulsion packages to two OPV-45 offshore patrol vessels currently under construction at one of the largest privately owned shipbuilding and repair facilities in the Eastern Mediterranean.Israel Shipyards in Haifa is constructing the new patrol boats for an undisclosed African navy. The vessels are designed for a wide range of missions, including protection against the increasing threat of piracy in the region.The OPV-45 has an overall length of 45.7 m, a displacement of some 300 tons.

MAN Energy Solutions said it has secured a contract to supply the main propulsion engines for two new 41-meter patrol vessels for the Royal Thai Navy. The global scrubber system market is estimated at USD 1.02 billion in 2018 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.82% to reach USD 1.86 billion by 2023. The global market is likely to grow significantly due to growing stringent environmental regulations to reduce atmospheric emissions, said a market research from Reportlinker. Although restraints like stringent legislations against disposal of contaminated effluents from scrubber systems are being observed, International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 global sulfur cap is expected to create better opportunities for the scrubber system market. Contamination from heavy metals found in scrubber washwater is expected to be a major challenge for the growth in the scrubber system market.

The CTG Sea Sentry is a wash water monitoring system which monitors both the sensor inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems. CTG has to date supplied monitoring systems globally to the marine industry’s leading providers of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems and announced the recent installation of the new improved Sea Sentry on board a major bulk carrier to monitor a newly installed SOx Scrubber system. To comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations, global shipping is required to meet specific exhaust gas emission levels.

As 2015 draws to a close and the Worldscale Organisation published the new 2016 Flat Rates, Poten and Partners goes through the annual exercise of updating Flat Rates in its systems. This highlighted once again the significant changes in bunker prices that occurred over the last 2 years. The Worldscale Organisation calculates Flat Rates based on average bunker prices over the period from October 1 of the prior year to September 30. The 2015 Flat Rates were based on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) prices of $614.81/metric tonne (MT) while the 2016 Flat Rates use prices of $367.55/MT, a reduction of 40%. Currently, HFO bunker prices are significantly lower again, at around $150/MT. The last time bunker prices were at such levels was in 2004.

On January 1, 2015, the IMO Annex VI, ECA zone requirements came into effect. Ship owners and operators are now faced with having to decide between switching to a lower sulfur fuel or embracing alternate solutions such as exhaust gas cleaning systems (Scrubbers) and LNG. Worldwide, about 300 scrubbing systems have already been sold to date for marine applications. Many of these have been sold for vessels operating in the North European ECA and many for the global cruise/ferry industry (both in the US and Europe). The U.S.

The 120,000 dwt. tankers, Eagle Barents and Eagle Bergen, delivered from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), are fitted with Class and Flag State approved exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) provided by Clean Marine. Measurements of exhaust gas emission and washwater criteria are well below the limits required by the IMO, ensuring the vessels’ compliancy with the 0.1% sulphur limit in ECAs which has been in force since January 1 of this year. The vessels are also compliant with the stricter US EPA requirements of a pH above 6 in washwater, measured at the outlet.

The ECO VLGC Corvette, delivered from Hyundai Heavy Industries on January 2, 2015, is fitted with a Class and Flag State approved exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) provided by Clean Marine. The measurements of exhaust gas emission and washwater criteria are well below the required limits stated in the MEPC guideline 184(59). This ensures vessel compliancy with the 0.1% sulphur limit in ECAs, which has been in place from January 1 this year. The vessel is also compliant with the stricter U.S. EPA requirements of a pH above 6 in washwater, measured at the outlet.

Imtech Marine equipped the first LNG-Hybrid Barge with green technology by order of Becker Marine Systems. The LNG-Hybrid Barge, which will supply the AIDA cruise fleet with energy in Hamburg, is fitted with Imtech Marine’s electrical solutions and fire extinguishing equipment. In addition, Imtech Marine installed the complete ventilation systems with corresponding heat recovery and sea water cooling systems, supporting the Hybrid Barge’s ‘green’ approach by saving energy through reduced heating and cooling requirements.

EU shipowners say they applaud the European Parliament’s change of heart on the monitoring of CO2 emissions, lifting the bar of included vessels from 400gt to 5,000gt and above. Previously, the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) Committee of the EP had endorsed the decision of Greek Rapporteur MEP Theodoros Skylakakis to extend the scope of the proposal by including smaller ships of 400 GT or above, as well as more types of emissions. Today however, the EP shifted its position by ultimately rejecting both the extension in terms of GT and additional emissions, thus aligning the scope of its position with the Commission’s proposal of solely monitoring CO2 emissions from ships of 5000GT or above.

Yara International will expand its emissions control business by acquiring a majority 63% stake in Green Tech Marine (GTM), a sulphur oxide (SOX) scrubber supplier to the marine industry. “New International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations are being implemented, and combining GTM with our existing Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) portfolio will help the maritime industry cleanse their emissions and be compliant,” said Yves Bonte, Senior Vice President and head of Yara’s Industrial Segment.

The European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) supports a European Union initiative to monitor emissions. ECSA considers that the best way to collect the required data for monitoring compliance with exhaust gas emission regulations is by means of Bunker Delivery Notes (BDN). The EU said last year that it will pursue a system for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions starting early 2013, and ECSA said any system must be accurate, simple, cost-effective and exclusively based on the vessels fuel consumption. ECSA believes that the Bunker Delivery Notes (BDN), already available onboard all ships and the entries in the oil record book, constitutes the appropriate legal, certified and verifiable input to a MRV system.

Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines to meet forthcoming exhaust gas emission regulations. Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 Recreational and IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2,600 bhp (1,940 kW), at the same time complying with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only. Compliance with IMO Tier III will be possible with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment.

The cruise-ship industry, wants an emissions-averaging plan that would allow it to burn the same heavy fuel it always has used in some areas, and it's lobbying Congress for help, according to a report in the Merced Sun-Star. Cruise Lines International Association has proposed a complicated emissions-averaging plan that would allow ships to continue to burn high-sulfur fuel sometimes. The industry's lobby group in Washington has gotten Democratic and Republican lawmakers to press the Environmental Protection Agency to look favorably on the industry's averaging plan. The EPA is pushing back, saying the industry's plan would lead to an increase in emissions. For now, the EPA is unyielding, but pressure is building.

Esbjerg-based Danish owner Flemming Pedersen has ordered a replacement for his 2006-trawler - scheduled for 2012 delivery, but now larger, more advanced and again powered by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s L27/38 propulsion package. The complete main propulsion package concept has earned over several decades its favourable position in a number of ship segments – amongst others for medium to large-size fishing vessels. Providing a beacon for the industry by embracing the world's first, fully electronically-controlled two-stroke marine engine, Norwegian chemical tanker specialist Odfjell is starting to see operating benefits resulting from its pioneering step. Long-run performance of the system applied to the main engine of the 37,500-dwt parcel tanker Bow Cecil last fall will have a signal bearing on shipowners' future commercial uptake of the technology, as encapsulated in MAN B&W's ME diesel program. In the meantime, the engineers aboard Bow Cecil have found the electronic system to be a valuable tool in optimizing combustion performance, facilitating engine tuning and adjustments in accordance with changing operating conditions and with regularly experienced, marked variations in bunker properties.

U.K.-based EJ Bowman has manufactured its range of marine heat exchangers and oil since 1919. The company recently had its range of hydraulic EC to PK shell and tube oil coolers design approved for marine use by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and now hold certificate no. 02-LD302798-PDA. Bowman heat exchangers and oil coolers are suitable for use on engines up to 1,400 kW (1,880 hp) and for gear boxes up to 1,800 kW (2,400 hp). As a result of this design approval EJ Bowman are exhibiting at the Workboat Show in New Orleans in December 2003. MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Alpha, Denmark has been awarded the contract to supply a twin medium speed main engine package to drive AziPull propellers for a series of 14,500 DWT Oil Products and Chemical tankers. MAN B&W Holeby GenSets will be supplied by a Chinese licensee. The vessels are under construction for Broström Tankers AB, Göteborg, Sweden. Four vessels will be built by Jinling Shipyard, Nanjing, China. The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery during 2006 and 2007. Together with Broström Tankers AB, the naval architects and designers Skipskonsulent A/S, Bergen from the Vik & SandVik Group, Norway, have been in charge of this state-of-the-art shortsea tanker concept, optimized for North European trade.
