Germany's North Sea Offshore Wind Capacity Up 5.3% in '22

Germany boosted its offshore wind power capacity by 357 megawatts (MW) to 7,036 MW last year, inching towards a planned 30,000 MW by 2030, power grid operator TenneT said.The German arm of the Dutch transmission group will play a key role in achieving the target, linking the majority of new wind farms to onshore high-voltage transmission grids, with a commitment to provide six 2,000 MW links by 2031.

The Schottel TransverseThruster with elastically mounted well installation reduces sound emissions by up to 11 dB, according to the manufacturer, with the added bonus of minimized underwater noise, too. The particularly low-vibration design of the STT is suitable for vessels of all types and sizes.In addition to reduced sound generation from the propeller and its surrounding structure, the well installation brings another advantage: since the propulsion unit is not welded to the vessel structure, flexible access to the unit is possible.

Research Vessel Atair to be Commissioned this Spring

A new liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered survey, wreck-search and research vessel built by German Naval Yards Kiel is currently undergoing installation and finishing works at Fassmer in Berne, Germany prior to being commissioned this spring.Ordered by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the new research vessel will be homeported in Hamburg, replacing the previous Atair, which entered operation in 1987.At 75 meters long and roughly 17 meters wide, the new Atair will be the largest research vessel in the BSH fleet.

DNV GL to Certify TenneT Platform in German Sea

DNV GL has signed a four-year framework agreement with TenneT to provide project certification for new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)  substations linked to offshore wind farms in the German North Sea.Agreement includes certification of TenneT’s DolWin5 converter platform with cost-saving offshore grid connection concept. TenneT awarded DNV GL the contract following an independent EU tendering process.Under this framework agreement, DNV GL is expected to carry out project certification for upcoming TenneT’s HVDC platforms, representing a cost-saving grid connection concept which will be applied for connecting offshore wind farms…

Iberdrola's Wikinger OWF Passes DNV GL Test

The energy advisory and certification body DNV GL has awarded Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Deutschland GmbH the project certificate for its Wikinger offshore wind farm.The 350 megawatt offshore wind farm project located in the German Baltic sea is fully certified for safe and reliable power generation.The certification was carried out according to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH – Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie) and covers all stages of the design assessment and implementation phase of the wind turbines, offshore substation including their support structures and the array power cables.The wind farm is located in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic sea…

DNV GL Certifies Arkona Offshore Wind Farm

Norwegian testing and advisory company DNV GL said it awarded the Arkona Offshore Wind Farm with the project certificate.The certification was carried out according to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH – Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie) standard BSH7005 and covers all stages of the project development from design planning over construction to commissioning.The project certificate confirms all relevant safety features of the wind farm and validates the technical and quality compliance with the BSH standard requirements, to ensure a safe and reliable power supply.Located in the Baltic sea, the Arkona project is 35 kilometres northeast of the German island of Rügen.

LNG-Operated Survey Vessel Atair Floated Out

German Naval Yards Kiel, has floated out 'Atair', the world's first LNG fueled research vessel, after a building period of 16 months.The 75 m vessel is being built for Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) by the general contractor is Fassmer Shipyard.Hull and superstructure as well as parts of the outfitting were constructed at German Naval Yards Kiel. The survey vessel is planned to be used for wreck search and underwater surveying.The LNG-propulsion - known as the future technology in the shipping industry - is a very innovative feature on “Atair”. The vessel” will use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) instead of usual Diesel, which is more climate-friendly than fuel.

Electronic Inclinometer for Tugboat Safety

Danish marine safety equipment manufacturer, Daniamant, has launched a tugboat version of its renowned Electronic Inclinometer, an advanced heel and pitch measuring device. The DanEI-300T fulfils the most recent Bureau Veritas Group’s regulations for escort tugboats and is approved by German BSH to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) performance standard MSC.363(92):2013. Bureau Veritas’ classification rules in the January 2019 edition stipulate that escort tugboats must be equipped with a calibrated heeling angle measurement system, otherwise referred to as an inclinometer.

B-QUA for Ballast Water Surveillance

The Government of Canada is testing aqua-tools’ B-QUA ballast water sampling and monitoring kit for possible use in the Canadian ballast water surveillance program. The program is being led a research scientist from Fisheries and Oceans Canada out of the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, in Burlington, Ontario. The research scientist leading the program was also involved in a 2015 study to test the efficiency of various ballast water testing methods onboard the research vessel Meteor on behalf of Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).

Germany Orders LNG Fueled Research Ship

The Fassmer shipyard in Germany is currently cinstructing a new research vessel to be owned by Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. The new 75-meter-long ship, the Atair, will replace her 30 year old namesake, and will be the first German research vessel operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. The engines for the new vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, who will also supply exhaust cleaning systems based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the LNGPac system for complete fuel gas handling.

MacGregor Bags Equipment Order for German Research Vessel

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract to supply oceanographic winches and Triplex deck handling systems to a new research vessel being built by the Fassmer shipyard in Berne, Germany. The order was booked into Cargotec's second quarter 2017 order intake. MacGregor equipment deliveries are planned for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2019. The new dual-fuel (LNG) 74m vessel, Atair II, is under construction for the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).

Germany’s First Accommodation Platform for Offshore Wind Farms

DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, has awarded Vattenfall with a final statement of compliance for its offshore accommodation platform. This is the first offshore platform in the North Sea to host up to 50 operation and maintenance staff members working at the nearby DanTysk offshore wind farm. As the offshore wind farm is 90km away from the nearest harbour, project developer Vattenfall designed the unique offshore structure to enable staff to live independently close to the wind farm without any outside support for up to three weeks. The offshore wind accommodation platform sets unique challenges to the certification process.

ABS Group Awarded BKR02 Wind Farm Certification Work

England headquartered ABS Group Ltd., a subsidiary of ABS Group of Companies, Inc., said it has received a contract to provide project certification services to DONG Energy Wind Power A/S for the planned Borkum Riffgrund 2 (BKR02), one of the largest offshore wind farms in German waters. Developed by DONG Energy, the BKR02 Project is expected to be fully commissioned in the first half of 2019 with a capacity of 450MW. The wind farm will be located in the German Bight area approximately 60 km north of Eemshaven. ABS Group's certification scope will cover project quality management and document review, as well as manufacturing inspection of the offshore substations (OSS), which includes the topsides and foundations. Inspections will be carried out in several European countries.

Ballast Water Management in the Field Put to the Test

Turner Designs, along with scientists from around the world participated in a research cruise aboard the RV Meteor, a vessel owned by the Federal Republic of Germany through the Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The goal of this cruise was focused on ballast water sampling techniques and protocols. Various instruments were used to test collected ballast water enabling researchers to determine efficiency for the various sampling techniques employed.

US, German Agencies Partner for BWMS System Testing

New cooperation provides manufacturers of ballast water management systems (BWMS) with an opportunity to obtain German and U.S. NSF International, the first Independent Laboratory (IL) designated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to evaluate and test ballast water management systems (BWMS) for U.S. type approval, can now provide BWMS testing to Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH)) requirements, which are based on International Maritime Organization (IMO) Guidelines. BWMS manufacturers may now submit for required type approvals to NSF International IL and in parallel to BSH using the same set of test data. This will reduce test costs and approval time and allow ships to navigate to U.S.

Netwave's NW-6000 VDR Receives Type Approval Certification

Netwave has received a Type Approval Certificate from BSH in Hamburg for its new NW-6000 Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). The NW-6000 is certified against MSC 333 (90) and can be installed onboard vessels which require a new VDR. “We have already received a large amount of orders in advance of our certification, both for new building projects as well as for retrofitting on existing vessels,” said Mark van Ede, Netwave Systems' sales director. The NW-6000 is based on IEC61162-450Lightweight Ethernet infrastructure. This enables fast installation, reduced lengths of cabling and auto-configuring.

More Type Approvals for Danelec VDRs, S-VDRs

Danelec Marine has received type approvals from the U.S. Coast Guard and China Classification Society (CCS) for its DM100 series Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs). The U.S. Coast Guard approval applies to the Danelec DM100 Simplified Voyage Data Recorders (S-VDRs) and clears the way for older U.S. flag ships to upgrade their S-VDRs to the new-generation state-of-the-art Danelec Marine products. The Danelec DM100 VDR was already U.S. Coast Guard certified. The CCS type approval applies to the Danelec DM100 VDR. “It’s important to note that Danelec Marine’s DM100 VDRs and S-VDRs have full unconditional type approval to meet all of the IMO and IEC technical requirements,” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine.

INTERSCHALT maritime systems AG, the provider of maritime software, services and systems for navigation and communications systems (NavCom) and manufacturer of Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) systems, announced that its new generation VDR G4[e] has been type approved by the China Classification Society (CCS), effective July 1, 2015. By granting the type approval, CCS certifies that the VDR G4[e] complies with the international regulations and performance standards of IMO Resolution MSC.333(90). The VDR G4[e] has also been approved by the German federal authority BSH.

Danelec DM100 VDR Earns KR Type Approval

Danelec Marine's DM100 series Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) has received type approval from the Korean Register of Shipping, the manufacturer annouced today. The Korean approval certifies that the DM100 VDR complies with provisions of the new IMO VDR standard which came into force in 2014, including IEC 61162-450 requiring Ethernet connectivity with the ship’s ECDIS and radar data. The Danelec DM100 products have also been approved by other international maritime certification bodies, including BSH, Russian Maritime Register, Singapore MPA, China Classification Society and the U.S. Coast Guard.
