Naval architecture, marine engineering and marine surveying firm The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) announced it has hired Charles Slajus and Jacqueline Campbell.Slajus joined TSGI as a naval architect. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Over the course of his education, Slajus gained shipyard operations and composite manufacturing experience as an intern. He was also a Teaching Assistant for a marine power and energy course.Campbell rejoined TSGI as a Designer after working for TSGI from 2013-2019.

The HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) team at APM Terminals Brazil developed an augmented reality (AR) app for employees, contractors and visitors to download on their phones which provided video and 3D information about risks and safety operations in the terminal and office buildings.For Global Safety Day this year, employees and contractors took part in an experiment to see if the new and developing technology could be used to teach safety measures across the operation in a campaign titled "Stronger & Safer Together".After opening the app, users pointed their phone at stickers placed on a piece of equipment or on the floor or wall of an office building.

From April 16-19, 2018, Naval Group will participate to the sixteenth edition of DSA, the Defence Service Asia exhibition. On this occasion, Naval Group will sign a contract with DCI to assist the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) to implement a comprehensive E-learning system in order to train its naval forces all over the country.Naval Group and DCI put together their complementary expertise to provide e-learning solutions to the Royal Malaysian Navy. During a three-year program DCI will transfer the French Navy know-how to the RMN.

Hydrex diver/technicians can perform a wide range of repair or maintenance work on all types of thrusters. An entire unit can be overhauled, propeller blades or seals can be replaced or repair work on a specific part of a thruster can be performed on-site. All of these repairs can be carried out without the need to drydock the vessel. Bow thruster operations are carried out using lightweight flexible mobdocks that close off the thruster tunnel on both sides. This allows divers to work in a dry environment around the unit.

The Djibouti Regional Training Centre (DRTC) has been equipped with a modern computer-based training simulator as part of International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s efforts to promote maritime safety and security in the West Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. Equipment installation, funded through a contribution to the Djibouti Code of Conduct Trust Fund by the Kingdom of Denmark, has been completed and the first cohort of six Djibouti officers have been trained to operate it. The simulator training room consists of 11 trainee consoles and an instructor's work station. The package includes software for many modules such as Marine Communication, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and Search and Rescue (SAR).

International project services consultancy, Cambla, has launched an upgraded version of its Schedule Animation Tool (S.A.T) to the renewables market. Initially launched to market last year, the technology was a world-first for the oil and gas industry and has been further developed to ensure effective and efficient planning of renewable marine operations. S.A.T provides an accurate visual representation of vessel locations and planned activities, offering project teams full fleet management support and significant cost savings. The most recent upgrades to the tool significantly improve user experience and include improved comparison view, detailed project infrastructure and the addition of renewable graphics.

Fugro and 3D at Depth, a global provider of advanced subsea LiDAR systems and solutions, announce the world's first application of subsea LiDAR data used to 3D Print an accurate 1:1 physical model of a damaged well part. The ability to use accurate spatial data in subsea part fabrication with 3D printing, introduces a wide range of possibilities to reduce costs across intervention planning and Life of Field programs. The subsea part fabrication was part of a larger project conducted in early 2016, using 3D at Depth's subsea LiDAR SL 2 technology and point cloud software. 3D at Depth was contracted by Fugro to perform subsea laser scanning services on a well abandonment project in Oceania, Australia.

Videotel, the leading international provider of e-Learning maritime training solutions and a company of KVH Industries, Inc., has received the approval of the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) for its security training courses. Videotel’s “Maritime Security Awareness,” “Designated Security Duties,” and “Shipboard Security Officer” training courses have been approved in their entirety by the NMA for meeting the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) codes, and seafarers completing these courses will receive the necessary qualifications and certificates for shipboard duty. The NMA approval enhances Videotel’s reputation with Norwegian ship owners, ship managers, and the offshore sector, which are guided by the Authority on maritime issues.

South Korea would propose a joint research with North Korea to develop marine resources and ocean tourism, reports Korea Herald. South Korea’s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry pointed out the need of an excavation of North Korea’s marine resources, and development of ecotourism content and infrastructure to attract Asian tourists. The plan is to work together on eco-friendly marine tourism measures with North Korea, and designate uninhabited islands as “Islands of Peace” where they can develop resources together. North Korea’s project on the Daedonggang River, which runs through Pyongyang, will have official developmental assistance from Seoul. The North previously asked to join a Yellow Sea ecosystem preservation project, in which South Korea and China are collaborating.

For decades the maritime industry has long-theorized of emulating the “airline model” in uniformity and technical capability of its own ship and boat integrated bridge platform. Enter Rolls-Royce and the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland which together have launched a ship intelligence system that it believes could be the next major transition for the shipping, able to gather, process and reasonably present increasing amounts of complex and high-level data from onboard systems to manage propulsion, navigation and potentially lead .to autonomous vessels.

Rolls-Royce, together with VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, unveiled its latest vision of Ship Intelligence, a bridge concept which it said could become reality by 2025. Rolls-Royce has worked together with VTT’s researchers and Aalto University to develop the new bridge, known as the Future Operator Experience Concept or ‘oX’. It offers the crew smart workstations, which automatically recognize individuals when they walk into the bridge and adjust to their own preferences.
