Waterfront workers are exposed to various hazards such as heavy machinery, hazardous substances, extreme weather and long hours. Survitec Unveils Interactive Safety Monitoring Solution

Survitec has announced a new interactive safety management solution it hopes will substantially improve onboard safety.The Safety Management and Rapid Response Technology Interface (SMARR-TI) uses a graphical monitoring interface to integrate fire detection and fire suppression systems within one system.SMARR-TI, which Survitec developed in cooperation with Turkish shipyard Tersan and Norway’s Havila Voyages, is already in operation on a pair of 15,500gt passenger ships.SMARR-TI

Survitec to Deliver Fire-fighting Systems for Spirit of Tasmania's New Eco Ferries

Survival Technology solutions provider Survitec has won a contract to supply advanced fire-fighting systems to a pair of 48,000grt LNG dual-fuelled eco ferries under construction at Finland’s Rauma Marine Constructions  (RMC) for Australian shipowner Spirit of Tasmania."This is a major order from a returning customer,” said Michal Peruga,  General Manager, Survitec, Poland. “This contract win demonstrates our  ability to go beyond simple equipment supply to being able to provide a  complete bespoke fire safety solution for all areas of the ship

Installed on OSV, Survitec's Seahaven Evacuation System Passes Heavy Weather Trials

Seahaven Advanced Evacuation System , developed by the UK-based marine safety and survival solutions provider Survitec, has successfully passed heavy weather sea trials (HWST), deployed from the offshore support vessel EDT Jane.According to Survitec, the test was carried out in line with the SOLAS requirements for Novel Appliances which requires the test to be performed in conditions that do not drop below six on the Beaufort Scale.Representatives from classification society Lloyd’s Register were in attendance

TotalEnergies Ramps up R&D into Ammonia as Marine Fuel

As a carbon-free molecule, ammonia is a promising alternative fuel for large vessels and deep-sea shipping to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the shipping industry. TotalEnergies announced today that it is extending research into the viability of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel, entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 22 companies across diverse industries to initiate a joint study on ammonia as an alternative marine fuel. These industries include energy, mining, power utility, chemical, terminal, shipping, shipbuilding, manufacturing, bunkering and classification society.“Ammonia is seen as a promising future fuel for shipping from an emissions reduction and scalability perspective

Equinor Contracts Seadrill Drillship West Saturn

Offshore drilling contractor Seadrill said it has secured a four-year firm contract with four one year options for the West Saturn drillship with Equinor Brasil Energia Ltda for work on the Bacalhau field in Brazil.Total value for the firm portion of the contract, including mobilization, upgrades and integrated services, is expected to be approximately $380 million, with a performance bonus providing meaningful incremental opportunity, Seadrill said. The total contract value is contingent on the final investment decision (FID) by the partnership for Bacalhau.

Hikawa Maru Celebrates 88 Years

Hikawa Maru, the only existing large-scale cargo-passenger ship built in Japan before the war, celebrates its 88th anniversary since delivery on April 25, 2018. Since 2008, Hikawa Maru has been moored at Yamashita Park in Yokohama as a museum ship open to the public. A celebration of its 88th birthday was held on Saturday, April 21, and about 8,000 guests visited. On April 25, 1930, Hikawa Maru was delivered equipped with the latest diesel engine and advanced safety technology, and shortly afterward assigned to the Japan–Seattle Line for cargo-passenger service. During World War II, the vessel was requisitioned by the Japanese government as a navy hospital ship

First Containership Receives LR Cyber Notation

The newly built containership MV COSCO Shipping Aries, recently delivered to COSCO Shipping Lines, is the first ever containership to receive Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive note “Cyber AL3 SECURE PERFORM” for its energy management system. The 20,000 TEU ship was built by Nantong COSCOS KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd (NACKS). “MV COSCO Shipping Aries is the first 20K TEU level ultra large containership built in Chinese shipyard owned by COSCO Shipping Container Lines.

NYK Study on Avoiding Collisions

NYK and NYK Group companies MTI Co. and Japan Marine Science released partial findings of a study on collision risk judgement and the autonomous operation of vessels. Representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), and three partner manufacturers (Tokyo Keiki, Japan Radio, and Furuno Electric) were in attendance when the findings were released. This entire study includes development of (a) functions to facilitate judgement related to avoiding risk of collision with other vessels; (b) remote operations by land operators; and (c) devices related to AR (augmented reality) of nautical instrument information, with the aim to pursue safe operations and reduce officer workload.

MPA Chairman Opens International Safety@Sea Conference

The International Safety@Sea Conference was officially opened yesterday by Mr Niam Chiang Meng, Chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Organised by MPA as part of Safety@Sea Week, over 250 international maritime professionals convened to share best safety at sea practices. This year’s Safety@Sea week will also see the inaugural ‘Community of Practice’ (CoP) Forum which will be held on 23 August 2017. The CoP Forum is a collaborative platform for maritime administrations, Classification Societies, and non-government organisations to share knowledge and best practices on general maritime safety as well as collaborate on promoting safety at sea. For the inaugural forum, 40 participants will be discussing the topic of ferry safety.

The Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) has announced the winners of its 2017 competition for the design of a safe and affordable ferry, chosen by a panel of judges. The awards will be presented on May 11, at WFSA’s Ferry Safety & Technology Conference. MOL Participated in MLIT R&D Support Projects

The project covers parts of the technologies used in MOL's R&D project, "ISHIN NEXT - MOL SMART SHIP PROJECT" , announced in November 2016, which aims to reduce workplace accidents onboard, reduce the workload of seafarers, and enhance crew operation and technical skills. AlphaBridge Consoles Delivered to Egbert Wagenborg

Alphatron Marine has announced to have delivered a state-of-the-art premium design AlphaBridge to the vessel Egbert Wagenborg, a modern, multi-purpose open-top ice strengthened vessel, named after the company’s founder. The ergonomically designed AlphaBridge with four 46-inch wide screens include remote support and an onboard information system. The Egbert Wagenborg navigation system contributes of a new level of onboard safety with JRC’s latest multi-function radar, ECDIS and conning which is operated on four large phenomenally bright displays that can be seen from nearly every angle.

Kongsberg Wins EPC Work for Heavy Lift Units

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded offshore EPC contracts worth more than NOK 520 million from the China Merchants Heavy Industries (CMHI) covering the deliveries of to two semi-submersible heavy lift and accommodation vessels; OOS Serooskerke and OOS Walcheren, to be built at CMHI (Jiangsu) in Haimen, China for Serooskerke Shipco BV / Walcheren Shipco BV in the Netherlands. Kongsberg Maritime together with its wholly owned subsidiary Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME) will execute the project. KME will provide all engineering, procurement and project management while Kongsberg Maritime will supply a ‘full picture’ system delivery. The vessels are based on a similar design to the OOS Greta (pictured) currently operating for Petrobras in Brazil.
