Sanmar A.Ş.delivered the Robert Allan Ltd. designed RAstar3200Wescort tugs Civitavecchia and Saraceno Primo to Italian tugboat operator Italtugs S.p.A. The tugs were constructed at Sanmar’s Tuzla facility, the greenest shipyard in Turkey. The RAstarOffshore/Escort Tugs designation is reserved for a unique class of ASD tugs, designed with a sponsoned hull form, a concept originated by Robert Allan Ltd. 20 years ago, and which has been proven in both model and full-scale testing to provide significantly enhanced escort towing and seakeeping performance. Motions and accelerations are less than half those of comparable sized “standard” tug hulls. It is interesting to note that others are now attempting to emulate this concept.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, forward deployed in Cold Bay, Alaska, medevaced an ailing mariner off the Turkish-flagged 600-foot freight ship 26 Agustos approximately 230 miles southeast of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Saturday morning. The Jayhawk crew safely hoisted the 46-year-old man and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services in Dutch Harbor. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Communication Station Kodiak received notification that a mariner aboard the 26 Agustos was suffering from abdominal pain. Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Sperry Marine business unit has won orders from the China Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to supply integrated bridge systems (IBS) for 12 new container ships. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “The state-of-the-art bridge electronics suite is designed to enhance navigation safety by integrating all of the ships’ navigation and steering control systems,” said John DeMaso, president of Sperry Marine. The new ships, which are being built for Chilean ship owner Compañia Sudamericana de Vapores (CSAV) and German ship owner, Reederei Peter Doehle, will be fitted with a complete IBS featuring Sperry Marine’s proprietary Voyage Management System software.

Transas has supplied a full-mission bridge simulator, Navi-Trainer Professional 3000, to the training center of Split Ship Management, Croatia, to be officially opened on March 1, 2001. This will be the most advanced simulator training facility of its type in the country. The focus of the new simulator will be the Main Bridge, which will be provided with seven visual channels permitting a 210-degree panoramic view. Other bridge equipment will consist of a maneuvering console with a conning display station and overhead panel; two ARPA/ radar stations; and an ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) console. Color Line, an Oslo-based ferry operator, has selected Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit to supply navigation and communication systems for the world's largest cruise ferry, under construction at the Kvaerner-Masa-Yards in Turku, Finland. Sperry Marine will supply a complete suite of bridge electronics, including a four?station integrated navigation system with type approved electronic chart display and information system, three BridgeMaster E radars, dual fiber optic gyrocompasses, dual NaviPilot 4000 autopilots, steering controls, a SRD 500 dual-axis speed log, a central alarm manager and a communication station meeting Global Maritime Distress and Safety System standards.

Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit has received an order from Jinling Shipyard, Nanjing, to supply navigation and communication systems for a new RoRo vessel being built for a joint venture of French shipowner Louis-Dreyfus Armateurs and Norwegian shipowner Leif Hoegh. Sperry Marine will supply a full integrated bridge system including electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), dual interswitched BridgeMaster E radars, dual fiber-optic gyrocompasses, autopilot, dual-axis Doppler speed log, echosounder, DGPS receivers and GMDSS A3 communication station. All consoles will have high-resolution flat-panel display screens. Sperry Marine will also provide support for system integration, installation, commissioning, sea trials and operator training.

Schelde Naval Shipbuilding has placed an order with Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit for a complete suite of bridge electronics to be installed on a new buoy tender being built for the Middle East Navigation Aids Service (MENAS). Sperry Marine will supply a fully integrated bridge system with electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), dual interswitched BridgeMaster E radars, voyage data recorder, automatic identification system, dual gyrocompasses, autopilot, dual-axis Doppler speed log, echosounder, dual DGPS receivers, GMDSS A3 communication station, Fleet 77 satellite communication terminal, helicopter beacon and helicopter radio. Sperry Marine will also provide support for installation, commissioning, sea trials and operator training.
