New Zealand Water Ship Unloads in Tonga

Life-saving water supplies from a New Zealand navy ship were distributed across Tonga's main island on Friday, as other countries battled the logistics of delivering aid to one of the world's remotest communities.Six days after the South Pacific archipelago was devastated by a volcanic eruption and tsunami that deposited a blanket of ash and polluted its water sources, the HMNZS Aotearoa docked in the capital, Nuku’alofa.The ship carried 250,000 liters of water and desalination equipment able to produce 70,000 litres more per day, New Zealand's High Commission said."Trucks ...

National Maritime Strategy Symposium Registration Open

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) invites the public, officials and other Marine Transportation System stakeholders to participate in a national maritime strategy symposium from January 14-16, 2014. This purpose of this forum is to solicit public views and gather information, insights and experiences to  assist in the development of a National Maritime Strategy. To allow for a more detailed discussion, this initial meeting will focus on the opportunities and challenges for growing the  U.S.-flagged international fleet. Information on registering for the symposium is below. The public meeting will also be broadcast live via web streaming and a listen-only telephone line. MARAD will make a link to the live stream available at http://marad.dot.gov.

Transas Unveils GMDSS Simulator

Transas Marine has extended its range of GMDSS simulators by introducing the TGS 4000 system. The new TGS 4000 simulator complements and enhances the existing TGS 2000 and TGS 3000 versions, by offering a number of new features which reflect the latest developments in shipboard communication equipment, based on modern PC environment. The GMDSS simulator TGS 4000 includes one Instructor workplace and up to 16 Student workstations operating under Windows NT. In addition to the functionality gained in the previous versions, the TGS 4000 simulates communications via Inmarsat-B ship earth stations. The TGS 4000 offers the added facility for airplane communications using AERO VHF on the aircraft emergency frequencies. The new simulator provides realistic simulation of radio wave propagation.

CNO Praises Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

By Journalist 1st Class (SW) Hendrick L. WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Mike Mullen addressed the Navy's ongoing participation in Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts during a Sept. 8 interview. The Navy has played a major role in relief efforts since Hurricane Katrina ravaged much of the Gulf Coast, paralyzing the entire area. Mullen began by expressing his sympathy to all of those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Mullen said thousands of Sailors and Seabees and more than 20 ships are currently in the area providing medical services, conducting search and rescue and search and recovery operations as well as dive and salvage efforts.
