Jan De Nul Group Orders Crane Simulator for Next-Gen Offshore Installation Vessels

Offshore installation specialist Jan De Nul Group has ordered a high-end crane simulator for two of its Next Generation Offshore Installation Vessels Voltaire and Les Alizés.According to Jan De Nul, the crane simulator will be based on real physics and the actual vessel models, enabling Jan De Nul to train its crewmembers and realistically simulate complex offshore installations in a completely safe environment, in the most severe conditions. The partner for the development of this simulator is the Norway-based company OSC AS (previously known as Offshore Simulator Centre).

Placing a board deck across two canoes, to make a broad flat and stable surface for transporting passengers and freight, was often done to form early ferries. The true catamaran is an evolution of that practical design concept. In recent decades, Australia has led in the development of all shapes and sizes for aluminum catamaran ferries.In December 2019, Dongara Marine of Port Denison delivered a very practical 148-seat, 24- by 5.5-meter ferry to Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority.

Silver Ships Delivers Survey Vessel to USACE

Silver Ships delivered a 48-ft. Endeavor Survey boat to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The vessel will be tasked with surveying the waters in both the Gulf of Mexico and rivers of the New Orleans District. The all-welded aluminum vessel is designed and engineered by Naval Architect Lou Codega, PE of Smithfield, VA and features a hull form designed to handle the short choppy seas of the Gulf Coast regions. The vessel is powered by twin Caterpillar C18 diesel engines at 803 hp each coupled to Twin Disc v-drive gears.

The Duke University Center on Globalization, Governance and Competitiveness (CGGC) recently completed a study on ocean technologies, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), for a consortium led by Nova Scotia’s Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism (ERDT). Excerpts from the report on the market and technology trends in ROVs and AUVs are provided in this article. Global ROV vehicle sales in 2010 totaled approximately $850 million.

MTNW Receives NSF Award to Retrofit Coast Guard Icebreakers

Seattle - Measurement Technology NW (MTNW) has announced an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to upgrade winch monitoring technology for the Coast Guard Icebreakers Healy and Polar Sea. This award brings new MTNW hardware and software technology to the support of winch operations, which are mission critical to these Arctic research vessels. NSF and the Coast Guard are working with MTNW because the Line Control Instruments’ (LCI) monitoring and control system provides advanced technology for on-deck safety, reliability, and research accuracy.

Kongsberg Completes K-Master FAT & Sea Trials for New PSV's

New aft-bridge operator station integrated with DP and thruster control. Kongsberg Maritime has successfully completed Factory Acceptance Tests for the K-Master aft bridge systems being delivered to two Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) built at Havyard in Leirvik for owner Sartor Offshore and Supply Service. The vessels are part of a four newbuild series, all featuring KONGSBERG K-Master, K-Pos Dynamic Positioning, C-Joy joystick control and K-Thrust thruster control. The FATs were for Havyard 103 and 106, vessels number 2 and 3 in the series and are due for delivery to the owner in Q1 2012.

Rolls-Royce DP Training Center, Norway

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has opened its new Dynamic Positioning (DP) and Automation & Control training centre in Ålesund, Norway. The simulation centre provides students with real-life training to become proficient with operating DP controls, without the risk of using real ships in close proximity to real offshore installations. The training centre, temporarily based at the Ålesund University college campus, will move into the Rolls-Royce Training Centre in Ålesund, once that facility is completed in 2011. A solution for the smaller vessel and operator, it offers a complete DP class 1 solution for dynamically positioned vessels and is designed to meet the requirements of Offshore Service Vessels and workboats. The system consists of two main components, the cPos and cJoy, both of which use Kongsberg RCU technology, within the (cPos or cJoy) Compact Controller. This forms the heart of the system and is scalable to fit any DP class 1 system. The controller's main function is to implement DP and joystick control algorithms, take actions as to operator commands and the information collected and processing from the various sensors in the DP system.

Transas VTS System Launched in Taiwan

The long construction works of the port of Ho-Ping (Taiwan) development have been concluded with the successful launch of Transas VTS system there. The project has been implemented by Transas Marine Pacific in cooperation with their Taiwanese agent, Seven Seas Electronic.The new VTS system in Ho-Ping gives significant advantages to the industrial port as it makes it compliant with the VTS IMO/IALA regulations, improves port management system and essentially increases navigational safety in the area. Nambian Ports Use VTS Systems from Transas

In October 2003, two successful installations of Transas VTS systems were completed in Namibian ports of Walvis Bay and Luderitz. These VTS projects were implemented in cooperation with Marine Data Systems (South Africa), the contractor and project coordinator. Two independent port surveillance systems fitted by Transas are primarily intended for assistance to Port Control operator to supervise ship traffic within the port area and help ship masters and pilots avoid collisions when following the approaching channel to the ports. The Walvis Bay port has two long approaching channels.

Main Engine Lit Off Aboard Makin Island

Seven crew members from pre-commissioning unit (PCU) Makin Island (LHD 8) witnessed a construction milestone Feb. 26, when LHD 8 became the first Navy vessel with a 35,000 horsepower LM2500+ gas turbine engine to successfully complete forward main engine light off (MELO). LHD 8 is part of the Navy's Smart Ship design, which is an effort to reduce manpower through the increased use of technology.
