The 110-foot Island Class Patrol Boat 'Chandeleur' moved from Miami to Juneau, Alaska to help support regional response capabilities.

The Chandeleur, commissioned in 1988, is the newest cutter assigned to the Coast Guard 17th District and recently underwent a significant modernization and maintenance period at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md. The maintenance period included the replacement of hull plating, tanks, piping, and electrical wiring; renewal of decks; rehabilitation of berthing spaces, and installation of new prototype equipment such as switchboards and generator sets.

As an organization the Coast Guard is always using risk management tools to ensure its people and assets are ready and capable to share the global responsibility of meeting today’s operational needs and mission requirements. The moving of an operational asset from one port to another is a natural progression of the Coast Guard’s flexibility in having the right assets in the right place to perform the essential missions of a region.

“We welcome the crew of the Chandeleur to Alaska,” said Capt. Scott Bornemann, commander, Coast Guard Sector Juneau. “This platform will help preserve our ability to safeguard mariners in Southeast Alaska.”
