KNUD E. HANSEN Expands in Canada

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm KNUD E. HANSEN has set up a permanent presence in the east coast port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, allowing the Denmark based company to increase its focus on Canada’s growing maritime sector as well as the increased demand for Arctic ship tonnage.Halifax will serve as the home base for senior naval architect and project manager Sam Stark, who has been with the company since 2013. Stark is tasked with increasing awareness of KNUD E. HANSEN in Canada and pursuing new design and engineering opportunities for the company while continuing to assist the firm’s other offices with engineering project work.KNUD E.

Detyens Sees Uptick in International Repair Work

International vessels have been trading in the Port of Charleston, S.C. for centuries. While Charleston is the sixth largest container port in the U.S., it is also home to Detyens Shipyards, Inc (DSI). In the past several years, DSI has seen an increase in the number of dry dock inquiries and bookings from International vessel operators. “In the last two quarters, we’ve dry docked eight internationally owned and operated vessels,” explained Peter Browne, Vice President of Estimating.

Marine Atlantic Inc. (MAI) selected Imtech Marine Canada to replace its ship to shore wireless communication system. Given a short timeframe, installation took place in just three weeks. Owned by the Canadian government, Marine Atlantic Inc. operates four of the largest ferries in North America and sails between the Provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia on a daily basis. In the government tender for the contract Marine Atlantic Inc. requested a ‘reliable, up-to-date and scalable ship to shore communications platform.

Canada Makes Marine Atlantic Board Appointment

Sharon R. Duggan has been appointed to the board of Marine Atlantic Inc. by the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. The corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible and quality ferry service in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Canada Invests in Two Ferries for Marine Atlantic

The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), Rob Crosbie, chair of Marine Atlantic Inc.’s (MAI) board of directors, and Wayne Follett, president and chief executive officer of MAI, announced that Marine Atlantic has reached an agreement with Stena Group of Companies to charter two new vessels. The vessels will significantly improve MAI’s ability to provide on-time, reliable service and meet increasing traffic demand between North Sydney, and Newfoundland and Labrador. “Our government is supporting Canada’s economy by investing in new ships to improve Marine Atlantic’s service and reliability,” said Minister Merrifield. “This investment, from Budget 2010, is another signal of our government’s commitment to Atlantic Canada.

Streeter U.S. VP for Lloyd’s Register N America

Bud Streeter is the new Vice President and Marine Manager for the United States, including responsibility for Panama, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Previously he was Lloyd’s Register’s Marine Manager Canada and, for the immediate future, he will retain his Canadian responsibilities. Bud has more than 40 years of experience in marine engineering, maritime security, and industry legislative affairs. He takes over from Graham Brown who retired at the end of November 2009 after 28 years of service. Based in Lloyd’s Register North America’s Fort Lauderdale office, Streeter will lead the U.S.

Lloyd’s Register Americas, Inc. has strengthened its marine business organization to enhance the support it provides to clients throughout North and South America. With approximately 200 employees and a growing presence in the Americas, the strategically aligned management structure will help Lloyd’s Register sharpen its focus on client relationships and better facilitate the services it provides. Tim Protheroe has been appointed Senior Vice President - Americas Marine Business. He will have full executive responsibility for marine activities in the Americas and for implementing Lloyd’s Register’s global marine strategies in the region.
