US Invests Nearly $10 Million to Advance Marine Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $10 million for seven projects that will accelerate development and testing of marine energy technologies. These investments advance research on wave-powered technology for use in seawater desalination and support a feasibility study for a potential ocean current test facility. “Marine energy technologies have incredible potential to provide clean electricity as well as clean water,” said Alejandro Moreno, Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

As yachts continue to increase in size, so does Derecktor Shipyards’ commitment to servicing them, the company said.It was in 2021 when Derecktor again unveiled the world’s largest mobile boat hoist, but this time at its brand-new shipyard at the Port of Fort Pierce. With a 1,500-ton capacity, the massive lift can safely haul boats up to 75 meters in length out of the water for service or refit.Most recently, the 1,500-ton machine at Derecktor Ft. Pierce hauled Coral Ocean, a 73-meter superyacht launched in 1994 by Lürssen.

Cruise Ship Makes Rescue off Florida

A cruise ship idling without passengers came to the aid of a small craft in distress in international waters 37 miles off the coast of Palm Beach, Fla., on Saturday.Upon seeing the boat in the water, the 855-foot Carnival Sensation maneuvered alongside the craft and provided blankets, life jackets, food and water to the 24 people on board, which included individuals from various nationalities and two children, operator Carnival Cruise Line said.When the boat began taking on water, Carnival Sensation rescued all 24 individuals and brought them on board.

MARAD Awards $220 Mln in Port Infrastructure Grants

Tropical Shipping Enters Suriname Market

Tropical Shipping announced it will serve the Port of Paramaribo with once-weekly sailings beginning May 14.The carrier will ship everything from small packages to refrigerated cargo, dry goods, building supplies and vehicles via its new eight-day transit between Florida and Suriname.Southbound service to Suriname will depart the Port of Palm Beach every Thursday and arrive in Paramaribo each Friday of the following week. The pilot house of the tug Huntington recently returned to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum after extensive metal refurbishing and repair.All restoration work was performed by E. H. Harvey Metal Working Co. of Easton, Md., and included sandblasting the exterior, removing lead paint, and preparing the exterior for final painting. Port Canaveral Moves Ahead with Cruise Terminal 3

Florida's Canaveral Port Authority has awarded a $108.5m contract to Ivey’s Construction for building its new Cruise Terminal 3 project.The contract agreement has been approved by the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners.Ivey’s was the low bidder to build a two-story, 188,000-square-foot terminal as part of the Port’s largest single construction project in its 65-year history – a $163 million complex that will become the homeport for Carnival Cruise Line’s biggest and largest cruise ship, the Mardi Gras, when finished in May 2020.“We're creating a world-class cruise terminal, and with these contract awards, the project is mobilizing and moving ahead,” stated Port CEO Captain John Murray.

Concussed Ro/Ro Crewman Medevaced

A 27-year-old crew member reportedly suffering from concussion-like symptoms was medevaced from a commercial Ro/Ro vessel approximately 14 miles east of Lake Worth Inlet, Fla.   U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders in Miami received a call on VHF-FM marine-band radio channel 16 at 11:15 a.m. from a crewmember aboard the 656-foot Norwegian-flagged car carrier Hoegh Trotter stating a crewmember was in need of medical attention.   A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet arrived on scene and transported the man to the station where emergency medical services were waiting.   EMS personnel transported the ailing crew member to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.

US Charters Cruise Ship to House Hurricane Relief Workers

The U.S. government has chartered another commercial cruise liner to serve as a floating hotel for relief workers in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. Carnival Cruise Line said it reached an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that will see the 2,052-passenger vessel Carnival Fascination docked in St. Croix to provide housing and meals for relief workers during a four-month charter from October 15 to February 3, 2018.

Irma Kills Eight on Saint Martin

At least half of Puerto Rico's island without power; storm likely to hit Florida Saturday or Sunday. Hurricane Irma killed eight people on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin and left Barbuda devastated on Thursday as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century took aim at Florida. Television footage of the Franco-Dutch island of Saint Martin showed a damaged marina with boats tossed into piles, submerged streets and flooded homes. Power was knocked out on Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy and in parts of the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. "It is an enormous disaster, 95 percent of the island is destroyed. I am in shock," Daniel Gibbs, chairman of a local council on Saint Martin, told Radio Caribbean International.
