Drillship Profile: Tungsten Explorer

Ultra Deepwater Drillship designed for drilling operation down to 40,000 ft. (12,120 m) & in water depths to 10,000 ft. (3,048 m)

The Tungsten Explorer is an ultra deepwater, dynamically positioned mobile offshore drilling unit (Drillship). The primary areas of activities of the Drillship shall be in the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa and Brazil. The drillship has drilling equipment on the topside with a continuous main deck and forecastle deck. Three engine rooms which house six diesel engines (7,000 kW x 720 rpm) are arranged aft in the hull. MAIB Issues Report on P&OSL CANTERBURY

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued its Marine Accident Report into the flooding casualty suffered by the ro-ro ferry P&OSL CANTERBURY. The vessel incurred flooding of its forward machinery space. Investigation found that a test valve on the discharge line from the emergency bilge pumps had been left open. Also, the overboard discharge valve from this line had no non-return capability.

Tuna Farming Goes Offshore

Izar Fene Shipyard, in collaboration with Itsazi Aquaculturehas, has developed an Offshore unit for the breeding, fattening and transport of the bluefin tuna (Thunnus Thynuus). Sailing at eight knots, the unit is able to transport (e.g.) living tunas from the Mediterranean to Japan. The proposed Tuna Offshore Unit combines a unique fish farming facility with a modern marine design to produce an offshore unit capable of purchasing young Tuna Fish in the selling centers, fattening of 1,200 tons of tuna fish in nine months in hot water areas improving the efficiency of the growing process. Upon completion, the fish are then presented to the fish markets at best prices. Other aquatic species such as salmon, bass, cod, se bream, hake, etc, could also be produced. The 603 x 184 ft.
