Former Telenor CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas has been appointed as DNV GL’s new chair of the board, the Norwegian-headquartered classification society announced.Best known for his 13-year tenure as president and CEO of the telecoms firm, Baksaas started his career with DNV (as it was then known) and spent six years at the company before leaving in 1985. He has also served as member of the DNV Council for 12 years.“DNV GL is a company that is well positioned to take a role as a trusted voice to tackle the global transformations the world is facing.

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and DNV GL have signed a framework agreement which will see them cooperate on joint development projects (JDPs) for future technologies in the shipbuilding and offshore plant industries.The Norway-headquartered classification society said in a release that the agreement was signed by DSME President & CEO Sung-Geun Lee and DNV GL Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen at the DNV GL headquarters in Høvik.“Through the JDPs with DNV GL, we aim to develop new technologies to meet the needs of our clients and further provide the direction in the shipbuilding and offshore industries,” said Sung-Geun Lee.

The global quality assurance and risk management company DNV GL and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore (NTU) are supporting academic advances in additive manufacturing – the process of 3D printing – for the maritime, oil and gas and other industries, through a four-year research collaboration agreement.Two new doctoral student (PhD) positions are being created through the Industrial Postgraduate Programme, supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and DNV GL. A further full time Research Fellow post is also being created at NTU’s Singapore Centre for 3D Printing.The research agreement will focus on developing industry standards, quality assurance processes, certification and supply chain tracking for the additive manufacturing sector. DNV GL has secured a classification contract for WindServe's new Crew Transfer Vessel.WindServe Marine, LLC (WindServe) has awarded DNV GL a contract for classification of one purpose-built offshore Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) for Ørsted North America (Ørsted). The contract covers the construction of the BMT-designed vessel, which will be the first offshore wind vessel built in the United States to class requirements.The high-speed aluminum catamaran is a custom design from the U.K.-based BMT Group (BMT), who has extensive offshore wind experience and a large portfolio of offshore wind vessels, including 49 CTVs, currently operating in Europe. The new state-of-the-art design from BMT is built specifically for U.S.

Hydrogen can play a significant role in decarbonizing world energy supply to mitigate climate change, according to a new research paper by DNV GL, the technical advisor to the oil and gas industry.According to new DNV GL research paper, decarbonization could drive an estimated 100,000-fold rise in demand for hydrogen for energy by 2050. The paper lays out a viable business concept for producing low-carbon transportable hydrogen offshore from natural gas.'Hydrogen as an energy carrier' predicts demand for hydrogen for heating residential and commercial space, heat for industry, and transport to reach between 39 and 161 million tonnes of hydrogen per annum (Mtpa) in 2050, under various modelled scenarios.

Project partners Eidesvik Offshore, Wärtsilä Norway and DNV GL have announced the closure of the FellowSHIP research project. In an increasingly complex, fast changing, and challenging market, the role of the classification society is more relevant than ever, said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime, at a press conference ahead of Posidonia trade fair in Athens. Class enables innovation in shipbuilding, guides owners and operators through a demanding regulatory landscape, and helps the industry tackle cyber-crime, he underlined.Leading off the press conference, DNV GL Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen explained that two megatrends are impacting the maritime industry: decarbonization and digitalization.

Under the theme IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future, two panels of experts led stimulating debates at a forum held at IMO Headquarters (15 May). Moderated by shipping journalist Richard Clayton, the forum discussed IMO's role in the future of shipping and international trade, with hundreds tuning in worldwide via online participation and hundreds of people submitting their questions to the panel, from Colombia to Indonesia. Klas Bendrik will join DNV GL September 1 as Chief Digital Transformation Officer to support DNV GL’s digitalization and IT strategy. Bendrik will be based at the DNV GL headquarters in Høvik, Norway and will be a member of DNV GL Group’s Executive Committee and report to Group President and CEO Remi Eriksen.“Digitalization is central to our strategy. The 20,000 TEU containership Cosco Shipping Gemini was officially named and delivered. The vessel was built by the Chinese shipyard Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) for Chinese owner Cosco Shipping Lines. Chief Financial Officer of Cosco Shipping, Sun Yueyin, attended the naming ceremony. She named the vessel and cut the ribbon. President and Deputy Party Secretary of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), Sun Bo; Party Secretary of Cosco Shipping Lines, Qian Weizhong; Chairman and Party Secretary of DSIC, Liu Zheng; as well as other guests and representatives from Cosco Shipping, CSIC, Cosco Shipping Lines, DSIC, DNV-GL Group and China Classification Society (CCS) were also present at the event on invitation.

The Foundation Det Norske Veritas (DNV) assumes full ownership of DNV GL and remains committed to Maritime headquarters in Hamburg. Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas (The Foundation) and Mayfair announce the sale of Mayfair’s 36.5% shares in DNV GL Group AS to DNV Holding AS. The agreement regarding the leading quality assurance and risk management company DNV GL was signed on 8 December 2017. In 2012, Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas and Mayfair agreed to build a global quality assurance and risk management leader well positioned to succeed in a rapidly transforming market: Germanischer Lloyd was merged with Det Norske Veritas to create DNV GL. Since the merger, the joint company has successfully adapted its organization and realized significant synergies.

DNV GL announced it is creating a specialized Digital Solutions organization that will set out to capture the opportunities that lie in data sharing, advanced analytics, automation, and machine learning as well as addressing challenges related to data quality and security. Elisabeth Heggelund Tørstad will leave her post as CEO for DNV GL’s Oil & Gas business to head the new Digital Solutions business, which will consist of 1,000 digital experts. She will be based at DNV GL headquarters in Høvik, Norway as a member of the Executive Committee for the DNV GL Group.

Liv Hovem will step in as CEO of DNV GL’s Oil & Gas business area from January 1, 2018. She will be based at the DNV GL – Oil & Gas headquarters in Høvik, Norway as a member of the DNV GL Group's Executive Committee reporting to Group President and CEO Remi Eriksen. Hovem succeeds Elisabeth Tørstad, who has been appointed CEO of DNV GL’s new Digital Solutions business area. Hovem has been with DNV GL since 1988, most recently as Regional Manager for Continental Europe, the Middle East and India in DNV GL’s Oil & Gas business.

DNV GL and Samsung Heavy Industries. Co., Ltd (SHI) signed a joint development project (JDP) agreement focused on the development of new LNG carrier designs. Mun-Keun Ha, Senior Executive Vice President of SHI, and Tommy Bjørnsen, DNV GL’s Regional Manager Maritime Korea & Japan, signed the agreement at the DNV GL Group head office in Høvik, during Nor-Shipping week. The JDP aims to develop two 30K LNG carrier designs, one with membrane type LNG tanks and one with type-C (pressurized) LNG tanks.

DNV GL held it’s traditional press conference at the Nor-Shipping trade fair today. This year, the event took place on the Vision of the Fjords, a DNV GL-classed carbon fiber hybrid ferry. The content showcased DNV GL’s innovative vision, with attendees taking part in a virtual reality (VR) presentation, which showed how DNV GL is pushing ahead with a digital transformation to improve the quality and efficiency of its services, as well as the emerging solutions which will take class into the future. The VR experience took viewers on a tour of the Shanghai Express, a modern container ship, to demonstrate how advanced sensor technology, powerful satellite connections, and the digital data being created and transmitted from vessels was opening up a new range of possibilities for shipping.

DNV GL will be presenting modern classification solutions, focusing on digitalization and environmental compliance at  this year’s Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo, May 30 to June 2. The classification society will kick off the week with the DNV GL Conference, which takes place Monday, May 29, a day before the trade fair officially opens, from 11:00–15:30 in the Felix Conference Centre in Oslo, Aker Brygge. With a focus on emissions regulations, DNV GL experts and industry stakeholders will highlight some of the key aspects to take into consideration regarding the implementation of the global 0.5 percent sulphur cap and the expectation to reduce CO2 emissions. Topics such as technology choices, fuel availability, price scenarios and enforcement will be addressed.

These systems will help to enhance safety and sustainability of shipping and port activities.

Drones, remote inspection technologies and insights on cybersecurity were some of the main topics discussed at the DNV GL Innovation Day in Singapore. Some 120 representatives from shipowners, managers, manufacturing companies, yards and other stakeholders participated in the event held this week. DNV GL’s Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen participated in the first meeting of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) advisory committee for further developing Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC) towards 2030. The committee is chaired by Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of BW Group, and comprises of 22 global business leaders and experts. As part of its work, the committee will review Singapore’s IMC development strategy and identify new growth areas to enhance Singapore’s long-term competitiveness and value proposition as an IMC. The Tsakos Group of Companies has selected DNV GL to assist in preparing a cybersecurity management system for its fleet and onshore facilities – the first such management system developed by a shipping company in cooperation with DNV GL’s Advisory Services. The Greek shipping organization will implement a comprehensive system of safeguards and procedures to protect their assets from cyber risks. DNV GL is the first classification society to put this kind of cybersecurity service into practice. “We wanted to assure our charterers and customers that our systems would be adequately protected from cyber risks by implementing the highest standards of cybersecurity on board our vessels and on shore.

The promise of new modern classification solutions to deliver quality, fulfill customer’s needs, and implement innovative technologies was the key theme for DNV GL at their press conference at the Posidonia trade fair today. Classification society, DNV GL outlined some of the steps it is taking to respond to the tough maritime market and the impact of new technologies on both its customers and on the classification business as a whole. In 2015, DNV GL delivered satisfactory financial results and increased its operating revenue by 8.2%. These have been achieved while capturing merger integration synergies to the benefit of our customers.
