TOTE, Inc. President and CEO Anthony Chiarello was honored by The Navy League of the United States with the Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award at the organization’s annual convention and Sea Service Awards Luncheon in Long Beach, Calif. last week. The Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award, named for a patron and past president of the Navy League, was presented to Chiarello in honor of his achievements during his more than 30 year career with maritime organizations and “contributions to protecting and growing the privately-owned U.S. Chiarello, who joined TOTE, Inc.

Academy demands that Alumni Association immediately vacate premises; court orders parties to work out details by end of business of Friday, May 10th. The eviction of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association has been affirmed by a Long Island federal court. Jim Forde ‘88, Esq., AAF Board of Directors, said in a prepared statement today, “We regret to inform everyone that the court denied our motion for an injunction.” He also said that, after the ruling, the Academy demanded that the Alumni Association immediately vacate the grounds. Academy officials say the case is simple. They need the property to adapt it to use as classrooms. The court however, has ordered that the parties have until Friday, May 10th to work out some sort of reasonable time frame to move out.

Anthony Chiarello, president and CEO of TOTE, Inc., will be the keynote speaker at the SHIPPINGInsight 2013 Fleet Optimization Conference, Oct. 22-24 in Stamford, Conn. Prior to TOTE, Inc., the largest of five operating groups owned by Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources, Inc., which includes five companies organized in maritime, logistics and ship management lines of business, Chiarello, was the COO and executive vice president at NYK Logistics (Americas), Inc. Prior to NYK, Chiarello was with the AP Moller/Maersk organization for 16 years.

GMATS to expand global supply chain and maritime security curriculum. As a foundation of the Global Maritime and Transportation School's expanding Global Supply Chain and Cargo Security curriculum, the Fundamentals of Importing and Exporting is an essential two-day course that will give the student a basic understanding of importing into and exporting out of the United States. This course is designed to provide an awareness of the many regulations, laws, processes, and principles involved in global trade, and from the perspective of the United States.

The Global Maritime and Transportation School at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy along with co-sponsor American Military University will convene its second annual Piracy Countermeasure Seminar on June 23 and June 24. The seminar will take place aboard the Academy’s scenic waterfront campus conveniently located in Kings Point, N.Y. on the North Shore of Long Island just outside of New York City. This two day seminar offers practical analysis of the maritime industry’s newest, best practices as well as proven seaborne preventive steps developed in response to current piracy operations off Somalia and other choke points and piracy hot spots around the globe. The first day will examine piracy’s socio-economic, business and political dynamic.

ICERS 9 Set for November 2 - 5, 2009, Kings Point, N.Y. The International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) in cooperation with The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and The Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) presents ICERS 9. The International Conference on Engine Room Simulators is the global forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience, views, research results and the identification of common problems with respect to the specification, design and use of engine room simulators (full mission/full task, part-task or desk-top PC based).

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report of its examination of internal financial controls at the US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). The report states that internal control weaknesses resulted in improper sources and uses of funds. Some midshipmen fee assessments were unrelated to goods and services provided to the midshipmen. The Academy improperly entered into some sole-source agreements with the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) and then inappropriately accepted and used GMATS funds. There were questionable billing and payment transactions related to use of the Academy’s training ship Kings Pointer. The report noted that some corrective actions are under way. GAO-09-635 (9/9/09). The National Transportation Safety Board today determined that the probable cause of a fatal accident involving a Staten Island ferry was the assistant captain's unexplained incapacitation and the failure of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to implement and oversee safe, effective operating procedures for its ferries. On October 15, 2003, the Staten Island ferry Andrew J. Barberi, owned and operated by the NYC DOT, was at the end of a regularly scheduled trip from Manhattan to Staten Island when it struck a maintenance pier at the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Fifteen crewmembers and an estimated 1,500 passengers were on board. Ten passengers died in the accident and 70 were injured.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation unanimously reported The Maritime Administration Enhancement Act of 2005. The bill establishes a grant program to assist small shipyards for capital improvements and improve maritime training programs for small communities largely served by the maritime industry. The bill also allows the Maritime Administration (MarAd) to use a portion of funds for the operation of the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) and proceeds recovered from vessel accident litigation and arbitration to be placed in a reserve fund to cover the costs of vessel maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
