Gary Roughead was elected as the chairman of the board of directors of Fincantieri Marinette Marine Corporation July 10.Roughead was the 29th Chief of Naval Operations from 2007 - 2011, after holding six operational commands. He is one of only two officers in the history of the Navy to have commanded both the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.Roughead served in several key positions aside from his sea duties, most notably as the commandant of the U.S.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) welcomed the crew of the newest Virginia-class submarine, Minnesota, today as it moved aboard and enjoyed its first meal in the ship's galley. Sharing in the celebration were Ellen Roughead, the ship's sponsor, and her husband, former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, who dined together with approximately 120 crew members in the ship's crew's mess. The submarine is in the final stages of construction and testing at HII's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division.

Northrop Grumman Corporation  elected retired U.S. Navy Admiral Gary Roughead to its board of directors. Roughead served as the 29th Chief of Naval Operations for the Navy prior to his retirement from the service in 2011. The addition of Roughead increases Northrop Grumman's board of directors to 13 members, 12 of whom are nonemployee directors. The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) observed live tests of the DDG 1000 Integrated Power System (IPS) at the Land Based Test Site at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division - Ship Systems Engineering Station (NSWCCD-SSES) July 22. DDG 1000 will be the first U.S. Navy surface combatant to use electric power for propulsion and ship services. An IPS generates the total ship electric power requirements, then distributes and converts it for all ship loads, including propulsion, combat systems and ship services. On July 27, 2011, the U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) begins an important new chapter with the appointment of Vice Admiral Peter H. Daly, U.S. Navy (Ret.) as the professional society’s Chief Executive Officer. Daly served from August 2008 until June 2011 as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. He brings more than 30 years experience as a commissioned naval officer, to include command of the destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59); Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31; and Commander, Carrier Strike Group 11. He has also served as Deputy for Resources and Acquisition (J-8), Office, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees on June 30 unanimously appointed Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USN, president of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. Admiral Carpenter is currently serving as the Commander of the Navy’s Warfare Development Command. The SUNY Board of Trustees voted on her appointment at a special meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2011. Rear Admiral Carpenter is the first woman to serve as president of  SUNY Maritime College. On May 17 U.S. Navy CNO Admiral Gary Roughead was awarded the “Seamaster of 2011” award, an honor conferred by Marine Technology Reporter magazine at a special reception in the Admiral’s honor at the OceanTech Expo (www.oceantechexpo.com), held in Newport, Rhode Island. In accepting the award, Admiral Roughead delivered a 30 minute speech, discussing the Navy’s future technological needs, specifically engaging the crowd of more than 200 in a discussion of subsea robotics capabilities and needs.

Six students from, Nigeria, Seychelles, Jordan and Sierra Leone graduated from the U.S. Navy’s International Anti-Terrorism and Piracy Course during a ceremony held aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola Dec 17. The four-week course conducted at the Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity (NETSAFA) International Training Center (NITC) provides information on the latest developments in anti-terrorism and piracy initiatives, and equips students with skills to help develop national programs addressing these issues. Austal-designed and built Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), USS Independence has officially joined the operating forces of the United States Navy following a commissioning ceremony held near Austal’s Mobile, Ala. facility. Thousands of Navy officials, politicians, industry delegates and spectators joined in welcoming USS Independence into the U.S. Navy fleet, where it will serve as a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments. The ship is designed to defeat asymmetric "anti-access" threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.

According to a June 3 report from United Press International, several Republican congressmen are pushing to get U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates to put together a 30-year plan for building warships. The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) spoke at the christening ceremony for the Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) on Oct. 18. Adm. Gary Roughead, CNO, highlighted that this ship is named after the man who is known as the father of Aegis, a highly advanced integrated combat system that is used on all U.S. Navy Arleigh-Burke class destroyers and class cruisers. Roughead was the first officer to have commanded both classes of Aegis-capable ships.
