IMO PaperSmart Meeting Restructures Sub-Committees

The IMO Council, meeting for its 109th session in London has endorsed, in principle, a restructuring of IMO's Sub-Committees. The Council meeting was the first “PaperSmart” meeting for the Organization, and was considered a success by delegates. Delegates were invited to make the meeting "paperless" (PaperSmart), to reduce costs and make IMO meetings "environment friendly". Delegates were asked to come to the meeting with their own laptops, tablet computers, etc., together with their own Internet cables to connect to wired access points in the main meeting room. An enhanced wireless facility (Wifi) was provided for improved wireless access to the IMO documents site (IMODOCS) and to the Internet. The restructuring is part of a review and reform process initiated by Secretary-General Mr.

Costa Concordia: IMO Calls for Rapid and Full Casualty Investigation

IMO Secretary-General urges rapid and full casualty investigation. ​IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has expressed his condolences and sympathy for all those caught up in tragic accidents involving ships over the weekend. “Causes of this accident are still not yet established. We must wait for the casualty investigation and should not pre-judge or speculate at this stage. I would like to urge the Flag State administration to carry out the casualty investigation covering all aspects of this accident and provide the findings to the IMO under the provisions of SOLAS as soon as possible,” he said. He added “IMO must not take this accident lightly.

Meeting of SHC SOLAS Working Group

The U.S. Shipping Coordinating Committee (SHC) SOLAS Working Group on Stability, Load Lines, and Fishing Vessel Safety (SLF) will meet in Washington, DC on January 18, 2002. IMO Will Focus on Security Issues at the MSC

Security issues to fore at IMO safety meeting Maritime security issues are high on the agenda of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), which meets for its 75th session from May 15 to 24 , as Member States prepare for a Diplomatic Conference on Maritime Security scheduled for December 2002, at which any new or amended legislation could be adopted. Other major issues to be tackled include the adoption of proposed amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, as amended; ongoing work on the safety of bulk carrier ships and large passenger vessels; implementation of the revised STCW Convention; and the adoption of new and amended ships routeing measures.

IMO Committee on Stability, Load Lines, and Fishing Vessel Safety

The 45th Session of the IMO Committee on Stability, Load Lines, and Fishing Vessel Safety will be held in London on July 22-26, 2002. Items on the agenda include subdivision and damage stability harmonization; large passenger ship safety; revision of technical regulations of the Load Line Convention; containership partially weathertight hatch covers; review of the Intact Stability Code; and revision of Fishing Vessel Safety Code and Voluntary Guidelines.
