Texas Yard Scraps Its First EU-flagged Ship

EMR Group said its International Shipbreaking Ltd (ISL) site in Brownsville, Texas is the first to accept a EU ship to be recycled in the U.S.Using sustainable recycling processes, ISL was able to recycle 97% of the materials removed from MT Wolverine, a 158-meter-long chemical tanker with a carrying capacity of 16,000 tonnes, which prior to being decommissioned, was sailing under the flag of Norway.The project follows a $30 million investment in new equipment and processes at ISL’s Brownsville yard, to meet the requirements of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SSR).

Vard Awarded Stern Trawler Order from DFFU

Shipbuilder VARD announced it has secured a new contract for the design and construction of one stern trawler for Deutsche Fischfang-Union GmbH & Co. KG in Germany. The contract value  is in excess of  NOK 500 million.The stern trawler has been developed by VARD in close cooperation with Deutche Fischfang-Union (DFFU). The new vessel will be the first trawler of VARD’s own design sold to Germany.The VARD 8 03 trawler design is developed to meet the latest demands for fish health management, efficiency, and environmentally friendly operations.

India Upgrades its Coast Guard

The Government India has established a robust maritime search and rescue framework to address and respond to various contingencies in deep sea and in coastal areas of India.According to a government release, the framework includes distress onboard fishing boats and merchant vessels, safety of life during marine incidents and SAR (Search and Rescue) response during cyclones.Director General Indian Coast Guard has been designated as the Chairman of National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB), which constitutes members from national/coastal state administration/agencies.The sanctioned strength of Coast Guard has increased from 8149 in 2008 to 16818 upto July, 2019 which is 100% increase from manpower in 2008.

Fujitsu, MPA to Curb Ship Collisions

Aid Ship Docks in Yemen after Diversion to Saudi Arabia

A World Food Programme (WFP) ship carrying humanitarian aid offloaded its cargo in Yemen on Wednesday, the United Nations said, after it was diverted to Saudi Arabia last month because it was carrying communications equipment. Saudi Arabia is leading an Arab military coalition in a war against Iran-allied Houthi rebels and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in an effort to restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power. Azipod D, Energy Storage Solution Selected for Newbuilds

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will supply the power, propulsion and energy storage solution for two of the most innovative vessels operating in the offshore oil and gas sector. The specialized vessels require an advanced propulsion and power generation system to perform its operation. The new Azipod D will help the vessels safely achieve millimeter precision at open sea. The Azipod D is the latest generation of ABB’s award winning podded electric propulsion system. The vessels will each feature two 4.2 megawatt units. A hybrid cooling system using combination of direct seawater cooling and internal air cooling increases electric motor performance by up to 45 percent. Overall, the Azipod units will have a substantial impact on the ships fuel efficiency.

Foundation Stone for Adani Ennore Container Terminal laid

Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd, India’s largest port developer and part of Adani Group, today announced that Minister for Transport and Rural Development, Mr. Foundation Stone for Adani Ennore Container Terminal laidor its container terminal at Ennore port. The terminal, which will be constructed in two phases, is expected to be commissioned in March 2016. On completion, it will be a 730 meter terminal, with 31.5 hectares of back area, and capable of handling 1.4 million TEUs annually. DNV GL Boost Role of DP Training Simulators

DNV GL says it has introduced a new recommended practice for the training of dynamic positioning (DP) operators. The new standard is based on the latest training and certification principles and defines the role that simulators can play in giving candidates better and more efficient training. Given the differing duration and frequency of DP operations, the recommended practice (RP) does not define a universal sea-time requirement expressed in days. Instead, learning goals are used to define the training experiences required. High Safety Requirements for Ships in the North-East Passage

The Stena Polaris is one of the tankers in Stena Bulk’s fleet with the necessary technology, equipment and crew competence for a safe voyage via the Arctic. This is the ninth time that one of Stena’s ships will have sailed through the North-East Passage since 2011. The Russian authorities responsible for administering the North East Passage have exacting requirements on technology and equipment. MacArtney Enable DCN Diving Project

DCN Diving recently contracted MacArtney to build & deliver a range of underwater technology equipment for use on a major project. DCN Diving had been called upon to perform a diver-habitat based inspection and repair of the inlet channels at a large European power plant. Critical projects like this often come with a challenging timeframe and this instance proved no different. One of the challenges related to the project was the extensive length of the actual inlet tunnels, which required the umbilical cable for interfacing the control room and the diver habitats to be almost 900 metres long.

GE Oil & Gas, Rosneft, to Pursue Russian Energy Opportunities

Under the terms of the MOU, GE and Rosneft will form a joint working group to identify the range of potential opportunities for short and long–term opportunities, including equipment for Arctic offshore field development, gas monetization technologies and enhanced oil recovery and difficult reserve development. The MOU was signed by John Krenicki, GE vice chairman and president and CEO of GE Energy; and Igor Sechin, president of Rosneft. The agreement calls for a strategic, cooperative relationship that would (1) leverage GE Oil & Gas technologies to help Rosneft improve efficiency and yields in its oil and gas exploration and recovery operations, and (2) explore opportunities to jointly develop, manufacture and sell equipment for use in Russia’s oil and gas industry.

Submarine cable networks connect countries and continents, carrying vast amounts of data traffic, including video. They are developed for high reliability over their 25-year design life. Lamore World-Wide Oil Spill Response

The April 2010 Gulf of Mexico massive oil spill needed immediate external support, expertise, solutions and equipment to assist in the containment and clean-up efforts. Finnish based Lamor Corporation immediately set its action plans into motion and within 36 hours, through its global network, the company airlifted its arsenal of equipment and key personnel to the scene. The blown-out well on the ocean floor off Louisiana threatened the entire ecosystem in the area as well as the livelihoods of tens of thousands of people at a rate of over 5,000 barrels of leaking crude oil per day.

FMC Tech to Acquire 45% of Schilling Robotics

FMC Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: FTI) and Schilling Robotics announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement whereby FMC Technologies will acquire a 45% interest in Schilling Robotics LLC for $116m in a transaction expected to close no later than December 31, 2008. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to FMC Technologies’ earnings per share in 2009. FMC Technologies is a manufacturer and supplier of subsea production systems. Northrop Grumman to Support Roll-Out of NATO MCCIS

Northrop Grumman  has been selected by the NATO C3 Agency (NC3A) to provide hardware and software support services for the roll-out of the Maritime Command and Control Information System (MCCIS) across NATO countries. The MCCIS merges information gathered from satellites, wide area networks, computerized tactical data processors and machine-readable messages to create a common operating environment for maritime and other assets. It is integrated by NATO support staff and includes commercial-off-the-shelf products together with NATO-developed applications. The MCCIS is installed in every NATO maritime headquarters, which includes more than 300 workstations.

Lockheed Martine to Provide Waterway Safety System for 2004 Olympics

Lockheed Martin will provide an extension to the Greek National Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) under a $1 million sub-contract from the Hellenic Telecommunications & Electronics industry, INTRACOM. The extension will support the country’s port security infrastructure for the 2004 Olympic Games. The Games are expected to bring 16,000 athletes and more than four million spectators to Greece. Numerous spectators are expected to move daily through the ferry ports of Rafina and Lavrio, located on the east coast of the Greek peninsula, which will be equipped with new regional Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) monitoring centers. Lockheed Martin will provide two radar systems to help monitor the waterway during the Olympic Games.

Safety Alert – PROSAR Technologies

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Safety Alert advising that it has discovered defective lifejacket lights made by PROSAR Technologies. It has also learned that PROSAR Technologies is no longer in business. The Coast Guard is canceling all approvals for PROSAR Technologies lifesaving equipment because quality control cannot be verified. PROSAR Technology equipment currently in use should be replaced as soon as practicable with approved equipment. (HK Law).
