A retired U.S. Navy destroyer USS The Sullivans has capsized after suffering a severe hull breech while moored on the Buffalo waterfront.On April 13, the 376-foot Fletcher-class destroyer-turned-museum experienced an electrical power-loss resulting in the failure of the onboard water discharge pumps. 4,000 Gal. Oil Spill in Baltimore
The U.S. Coast Guard informs its continues tp oversee a response to an oil spill Friday at CP Crane Generating Station in Baltimore. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Baltimore received a report from the National Response Center Thursday of approximately 3,000 gallons of lubrication oil in the discharge canal at CP Crane Generating Station in Baltimore. Spill Control Association Names New Directors
The Spill Control Association of America (SCAA), a professional association representing oil spill removal organizations (OSRO), spill managers, qualified individuals, consultants, equipment and material manufacturers, distributors, insurers, and educational and governmental organizations, announced the appointment of three new SCAA Directors and the renewal of a fourth Director for another two-year term. The appointments were announced at the Annual Meeting on March 8 in Alexandria, Va.
NY, Heating Oil Barge Runs Aground
A barge carrying more than 5 million gallons of home heating oil reportedly struck an unknown object and began taking on water near City Island, N.Y., at approximately 2:30 p.m., Jan 22. No pollution is reported at this time. The commercial tug Meredith C. Reinauer was pushing a barge to Boston, Mass., when they reportedly struck the object near Execution Rocks, N.Y. The master of the tug contacted the Coast Guard and reported the barge was taking on water in a ballasting void. The tug brought the barge to anchor off of Hart Island, N.Y. A Coast Guard 41-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Kings Point was quickly on scene to confirm that the vessel was not discharging any oil. Commercial divers from Randive, Inc.
Inter-Agency Partners Begin Oil Spill Clean up Efforts
An unidentified source of heavy oil washed up on the shore Tuesday between Shark River Inlet, Monmouth County, and Seaside Heights, Ocean County, prompting the Coast Guard and other federal, state and local officials to begin clean-up efforts. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office/Group Philadelphia along with the Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team, N.J. Department of Environmental protection, Bradley, Neptune, Asbury Park and Avon Offices of Emergency Response, New Jersey State Police, Tri-State Bird Rescue, and numerous other groups are currently responding to the spill that spans the 12-mile stretch of shoreline. The spill was reported Tuesday afternoon by New Jersey State Police.
Unified Command Ends Cleanup of NY Spill
The unified command responding to the spill of approximately 800 gallons of oil in Riverhead, N.Y., Oct. 14, including the Coast Guard, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and Penn Maritime Inc., with assistance from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ended active cleanup operations here today. Representatives from the towns of Riverhead and Southold inspected the beach with members of the unified command here today also. Crews removed 30 20-cubic-yard dumpsters, approximately 360 tons, of oil-soaked debris. Over 120 workers from Miller Environmental Group responded to the spill at the height of operations utilizing backhoes, front loaders and other heavy equipment.
Unified Command Responds to NY Oil Spill
A Unified Command comprised of the U.S. Coast Guard, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and Penn Maritime Inc. continue to respond to a #6 fuel oil spill that occurred Oct. 14, 2006. The amount of oil spilled is unknown but is estimated to be as much as 800 gallons. The spill occurred on the deck of the barge P-120 owned by Penn Maritime Inc. berthed on the south side of the ConocoPhillips offshore platform located approximately one mile from the north shore of Long Island. The spill was stopped and containment boom was immediately deployed around the barge upon discovery. Adverse weather conditions are believed to have contributed to the impact of the oil spill. Penn Maritime Inc. and ConocoPhillips are fully cooperating with the U.S.
