Pirates Move From High Seas to High Tech

A group of cunning tech-savvy pirates hacked a shipping company’s systems, enabling them to carefully target cargo on the firm’s vessels. A curious case reported by Verizon's RISK (Research, Investigations, Solutions and Knowledge)  Team shows that even those lowly sea pirates chasing after cargo ships with old Kalashnikovs in worn-out dingies are resorting to hacking to boost up their profits. Marine Software: What’s New?

There are a number of computer programs and hardware that promises to make marine vessels more productive and interactive. For example, Maxsea, Marstons Mill, Mass. has a module that connects their chart plotter to the sensors of a dredge to record the vessel's track. The track can be displayed on the chart plotter and the data collected can be directly exported in the ASC II format for use by other data processing software. The seabed outline is displayed "live" in 2-D and 3-D and the data is recorded. Need a tough bulkhead-mounted PC? Comark of Medfield, Mass. has a unit with the enclosure made of marine aluminum with an epoxy powder finish and is rated for a Nema 12 environment.

Implementation of a Computerized Compliance Management System

By Hector V. In recent years, the emphasis in Maintenance Management has grown for various reasons, all very much related to the financial benefits that the owner of vessels and/or offshore installations will capture by paying much closer attention to Preventive maintenance than was normally contemplated in previous decades. The offshore oil field industry and ship owners/operators need to pay close attention to the development of international conventions containing regulations and classification society requirements regarding maintenance. Classification societies requirements to periodical surveys make possible to establish a survey arrangement for retention of class based on Planned Maintenance System (PMS) on board.
