Unifire AB’s FlameRanger is a first-of-its-kind robotic nozzle system which automatically detects and extinguishes fires for fixed installations, indoors and outdoors, for numerous applications and industries. The system uses two FV300 Array IR Detectors to detect and locate a fire in three dimensions (x, y, z). Up to four fires can be detected simultaneously, and the system knows the size and volume of the fire(s) as well. When a flame is detected, the system extends a robotic arm mounted with an advanced robotic nozzle.

A group of cunning tech-savvy pirates hacked a shipping company’s systems, enabling them to carefully target cargo on the firm’s vessels. A curious case reported by Verizon's RISK (Research, Investigations, Solutions and Knowledge)  Team shows that even those lowly sea pirates chasing after cargo ships with old Kalashnikovs in worn-out dingies are resorting to hacking to boost up their profits. Saab, with Elcome Marine Services, successfully implements National Automatic Identification System Network in India. Saab's National Automatic Identification System (NAIS) on the Indian coast line for India’s Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), will also be used by Indian Navy, Coast Guard and DG Shipping. This National Automatic Information System (NAIS) provides coverage to entireIndianCoast, whereby 74 lighthouses are now fitted with the Saab systems. Automatic Identification System (AIS) provides real time merchant traffic information and the web server allows access to live data over internet. The project comprised installation of sensors and equipments along the Indian coast for regional and national control centers.

There are a number of computer programs and hardware that promises to make marine vessels more productive and interactive. For example, Maxsea, Marstons Mill, Mass. has a module that connects their chart plotter to the sensors of a dredge to record the vessel's track. The track can be displayed on the chart plotter and the data collected can be directly exported in the ASC II format for use by other data processing software. Unitor's new information technology system named PartnerSHIP offers subscribers access to all critical information regarding their fleet as well as data about Unitor's worldwide network. This Web-based program offers secure and direct customer access into Unitor's mainframe computer. This computer network acts as a data repository for all of the customer's information. In conjunction with that information it also accesses Unitor's own central database regarding its products, services and port information through a secure web server.

On June 19, 2002, the United States Coast Guard proposed permanent changes to its notification of arrival and departure information for all commercial vessels greater than 300 gt. (See, 67 Fed. Reg. 41659). The notice of proposed rulemaking is part of a greater port security scheme that seeks to ensure port safety, security without compromising the flow of commerce. The changes to the present Notice of Arrival (NOA) reporting regime are substantive and procedural.
