Authorities Reviewing Evidence from Titan Submersible Tragedy

Discovery Channel to Air Special on Raising Costa Concordia

What does it take to lift a ship bigger than the Titanic? On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia -- one of the largest and most luxurious cruise ships ever built -- ran aground off the coast of Italy leaving 32 people dead. The hulking vessel still remains where it first capsized – becoming a painful eyesore for locals as well as a growing environmental hazard. Now Discovery Channel returns to the scene of the shipwreck with Inside  Raising The Concordia, premiering Friday, September 20, at 10 PM E/P, to capture the major salvage operation taking place and reveal the inside story told by the elite team of engineers tasked with the seemingly impossible -- rotating the massive ship into an upright position and eventually removing it from the sea.

Vessel Grounded Outside San Juan Harbor

The Coast Guard approved the salvage and oil removal plans earlier this week for the M/V Kent Reliant which has been grounded outside San Juan harbor since September 18. The salvage operation will begin with the removal of all the vessel’s oil products which is expected to last two days then the partial removal of cargo is expected to begin. A Protective boom has been deployed and staged in environmentally sensitive areas around Isla de Cabras and Isla de Esperanza. The salvage company, Titan Marine, was forced to delay the start of offloading procedures for the heavy fuel oil today due to poor weather conditions. Update on Vessel grounded outside San Juan harbor

Commercial tugs come to the assistance of the M/V Kent Reliant, aground outside the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Panamanian-flagged freighter ran aground while approaching the channel entrance early in the morning Sept. 18 . None of the 17 crewmembers aboard were injured, and no pollution has been observed from the vessel. Coast Guard personnel from Marine Safety Office San Juan are onboard monitoring the safety of the vessel and its crew, as well as investigating the cause of the grounding. San Juan Harbor remains open.

Container Barge Runs Aground

Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Jacksonville is overseeing response operations to the grounding of the 250-foot container barge, Guantanamo Bay Express, which was being pulled by the tugboat Spence while trying to leave the St. Johns River in Mayport at 2 a.m. The barge is located on the north side of the Mayport Jetties and is no concern to inbound or outboard vessel traffic at the entrance of the St. Johns River. Pac-Atlantic Marine Leasing, LCC, owner of the Guantanamo Bay Express has taken prompt action and hired Titan Marine, LLC to remove the barge. Plans have not been finalized or approved by the Coast Guard at this time but salvage operations are anticipated to begin tomorrow.

Ferry American Pride Runs

The Coast Guard continues to coordinate the response to Saturday's grounding of the passenger ferry American Pride on Triangle Reef, just off the Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas Harbour, U.S. Virgin Islands. Fifteen passengers and three crewmembers aboard the American Pride were rescued from the vessel by Sea Tow Saint Thomas, and were reported to have suffered no injuries. The vessel had just departed the Saint Thomas Harbour and was headed to Tortola, British Virgin Islands when it ran aground. The Coast Guard was first notified about the grounding by a 911 operator. It was reported to the Coast Guard yesterday that the portside fuel tank of the American Pride had ruptured and approximately 350 gallons of diesel fuel were released into the water.
