A Coast Guard helicopter aircrew medically evacuated a 57-year-old woman from the cruise ship Carnival Radiance approximately 35 miles southwest of Point Loma, Saturday. Carnival Radiance crewmembers contacted Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders at approximately 4:30 p.m. requesting assistance for a passenger displaying stroke symptoms.Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew with a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) Team paramedic aboard to assist.Once on the scene, the helicopter crew lowered the rescue swimmer, recovered the patient and transported her to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The patient was reported to be in stable condition.

The Port of Seattle Commission has appointed retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Stephen P. Metruck as its new Executive Director, effective February 1, 2018. Metruck will succeed interim executive director Dave Soike, who took over following the resignation of port CEO Ted Fick in February 2017. Admiral Paul Zukunft, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, visited the Port of San Diego’s administrative offices on February 12. The Commandant was in town to participate in the 2015 Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association /U.S. Naval Institute Conference held at the San Diego Convention Center. During his visit to the port, the Commandant participated in a briefing that included Dan Malcolm, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners; Acting President and CEO John Bolduc; Acting Chief of Harbor Police Mark Stainbrook and other senior Port staff members.

The Coast Guard the U.S. Navy opened the Hampton Roads Sector Command – Joint Harbor Operations Center (SCC-JHOC) on March 24. The SCC-JHOC combines detection capability and command and control functions of Coast Guard and Navy entities within the Port of Hampton Roads. The mission of the Coast Guard and Navy personnel is to detect, monitor, and track vessel movements, critical port infrastructure, and militarily essential waterways in the port area. The staff will assume tactical control and coordination of responding law enforcement agencies during suspected and actual maritime security threats or incidents.
