2023 Coast Guard Engineer of the Year Named

Lt. Lena “Lexie” Royster, a mechanical engineer in the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center, in Washington, has been selected as the 2023 Coast Guard Engineer of the Year.The Coast Guard Engineer of the Year Award recognizes Coast Guard active duty and civilian engineers for their accomplishments and achievements. The award’s selection panel considers many factors including engineering accomplishments, awards, honors and educational achievements.“I am extremely thankful for the opportunities the Coast Guard has given me,” said Royster.

Techcross ECS-A BWMS Earns USCG Type Approval

South Korea-based ballast water management system manufacturer Techcross said its discontinued ECS-A system has been approved in addition to Techcross ECS in the updated approval status of U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Marine Safety Center (MSC). This means that Techcross, which sells electrolysis-based ECS and ECS-HYCHLOR, has also obtained a new USCG type approval for ECS-A, which is the initial model of ECS.ECS-A received International Maritime Organization (IMO) basic approval the first in the world in 2006.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) Type Approval Certificate to Korean manufacturer Techcross, Inc. after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the Techcross ECS-HYCHLOR BWMS consists of filtration and electrolysis during uptake and neutralization at discharge. The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the 30th U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Hyde Marine, Inc., after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval applications determined the systems met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the GUARDIAN-US consists of filtration and UV treatment at intake and UV treatment at discharge. Vessels Queue Grows as Salvage Continues on the Intracoastal Waterway

Nearly 200 towing vessels and 600 barges are queued on the Intracoastal Waterway while salvors work to clear a halved and partially sunken rock barge near Berwick, La., the U.S. Coast Guard said.A section of waterway has been closed since Sunday night, when a towing vessel pushing six rock-filled hopper barges ran aground at mile marker 99.The push boat Miss Odessa was reportedly transiting southbound on the Atchafalaya River when it turned west onto the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and hit bottom. One of the barges, ACL 01700, split in half and sunk when the vessel attempted to break free.

The Marine Safety Center issued the 20th Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Cathelco Ltd, after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the Evolution BWMS consists of filtration with UV treatment during uptake and discharge.
