U.S. Navy warship USS Fitzgerald, which was damaged and nearly sunk after a fatal collision with a cargo ship in June and then was damaged again while on board a heavy lift transport vessel, has arrived in Pascagoula, Miss., for repair work at Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer arrived in Pascagoula on January 19, aboard heavy lift vessel MV Transshelf inward bound from Yokosuka, Japan. Fitzgerald is expected to spend several days in the Port of Pascagoula as the heavy lift ship will commence the reverse operation of unfastening, lowering and guiding the ship down off of the platform. A two-year project to dismantle and recycle the decommissioned U.S. Navy vessel USS Ranger (CV-61) has recently concluded. In the early hours of June 17, U.S. destroyer the USS Fitzgerald was hit by a containership just off the coast of Shimoda, Japan. The collision claimed the lives of seven U.S. Navy Sailors. In the aftermath, both sides are trying to figure out exactly what happened. The containership, ACX Crystal, and the U.S. Navy initially reported the incident at 2:25 a.m. local time. However, they have since revised the time to 1:30 a.m. Apparently, the ACX Crystal made a U-turn at around 2 a.m. to go back and see what it hit.

U.S. Navy sailors aboard amphibious assault ship USS Boxer took time to reflect on the anniversary of the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden seven years ago. Phillips was rescued April 12, 2009 by special operations personnel aboard USS Bainbridge and transferred to Boxer for medical evaluation and care. Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $618 million contract modification to fund construction of the Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) guided missile destroyer DDG 123 for the U.S. Navy. The 10 U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to Coastal Riverine Squadron 3 who were briefly detained by Iran Jan 12-13, returned to their homeport in San Diego last night. All of the Sailors are in good health and each will complete the final phase of reintegration. During this phase, which can last several days, Sailors reunite with their families, continue debriefings, and receive any ongoing medical care and support as necessary. "Our Sailors are being reintegrated with dignity and professionalism," said Rear Adm. Frank Morneau, Commander Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. The three-phased reintegration process began in theater immediately following their release, Jan. 13. The focus of Phase I of the reintegration process was to ensure the immediate health and safety of the Sailors.

The 10 U.S. Navy sailors briefly detained in Iran have safely returned to U.S. custody. There are no indications that the sailors were harmed during their overnight detention, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. The crew of USS Constitution commemorated the bicentennial of Old Ironsides' final battle during the War of 1812, her unprecedented dual-victory over Royal Navy ships HMS Cyane and HMS Levant Feb. 20 in Charlestown Navy Yard. Constitution Sailors fired the ship's saluting battery at noon to commemorate the start of the battle, and visitors to the ship received dramatic accounts of the battle from Constitution crew members throughout the day. At sunset, the saluting gun was fired again in commemoration of the conclusion of both the battle and the War of 1812. The evening gun salute was followed by a ceremony and reception at the USS Constitution Museum. The reception opened with welcoming remarks from Cmdr. Sean D.

The U.S. 6th Fleet command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) departed Batumi, Georgia, Oct. 18 after completing a successful port visit. The 20th annual exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Singapore commenced with an opening ceremony at Changi Naval Base, says US Navy Task Force 73 Public Affairs. In its 20th year, CARAT Singapore is part of a series of bilateral naval exercises between the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the armed forces of nine partner nations in South and Southeast Asia. The looming threat of small boats to national security calls into play some innovative options. Since the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 revealed a series of national security vulnerabilities, the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security have been exploring options to reduce these risks. One vulnerability that has proven difficult to address is that of an attack on U.S. assets and interests by small boats. The U.S. Air Force has recently conducted a successful test of its ability to neutralize and eliminate such a threat.

American Systems, a provider of federal IT and engineering solutions, announced that it was awarded a Department of Navy (DoN) Commander Naval Surface Forces Pacific (CNSP) Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center contract valued up to $23.5 million. In winning this contract award, American Systems will continue supporting the Engineering Readiness Assist Teams (ERATs) program. The crew of USS Constitution embarked on their final Boston Harbor underway demonstration aboard Old Ironsides this year, Oct. 17. Constitution set out into the harbor for her fifth and final underway of 2014 at 10 a.m. with more than 600 guests in attendance aboard America's 'Ship of State.' The guest list, made up of individuals and organizations with long-standing ties of support to both the ship and the Navy, featured Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, a Boston Pops quintet and the Dropkick Murphys, one of Boston's most popular hometown bands. This was the historic warship's final Boston Harbor cruise until 2018, as she is scheduled to enter dry dock in March 2015 for a three-year planned restoration period.

U.S. Navy Sailors and civilian firefighters partnered with the Guam Fire Department (GFD) to extinguish a blaze along Route 17, Cross Island Road, in Santa Rita March 25. A MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25 and Engine 2 from U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Fire and Emergency Services (FES) responded to the scene and provided support. "The team here on Guam relies upon mutually supporting assets across the military and civilian sectors, to be ready day or night to respond to any number of scenarios," said Cmdr. Gregory Leland, HSC-25 commanding officer. NBG FES responded as part of the mutual aid agreement between local and federal emergency services.
