Fire Breaks Out on US Navy Ship in San Diego

U.S. Navy ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) caught fire on Sunday morning while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego.According to the U.S. Navy, 21 people were being treated for light injuries on Sunday.The Navy said in a statement: "Today, we suffered a terrible tragedy aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) when a fire broke out aboard the ship while in port San Diego. At this point, 17 Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital."The remainder of the crew is accounted for.

Vice Adm. Richard Hunt to lead SNA

Retired Vice Adm. Richard Hunt will assume the position of president of the Surface Navy Association (SNA) at the association’s annual symposium in January. Hunt succeeds retired Vice Adm. Barry McCullough, who has been president since 2013.Hunt is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was commissioned in February 1976 through the Officer Candidate School program in Newport, R.I. Former U.S. Navy Captain Pleads Guilty in Corruption, Fraud Probe

USNS Mercy Departs Bengkulu Indonesia

Service members and partner nations participating in Pacific Partnership 2018 (PP18) departed Bengkulu aboard Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), April 10. "I'd like to thank the residents of Bengkulu for their hospitality. I have found that they are some of the most engaging and friendly people I have ever met," said Capt. David Bretz, PP18 mission commander. Three-Carrier Strike Force Exercise to Commence in Western Pacific

The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) strike groups will commence a three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific, Nov. 11-14. LCE Wins $18.7 Mln Contract to Support Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard

Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) said it has been awarded a $18.7 million, five-year contract from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) to continue to provide Code 200 with engineering services in support of critical submarine maintenance availabilities. As the largest and most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East, PHNSY & IMF has served the nation since 1908 when it was created as a coaling and repair station. The shipyard earned its motto “We Keep Them Fit to Fight” during its pivotal role in World War II and has supported the U.S. Navy Fleet in all 20th and 21st century international conflicts.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday that he was working to see if there was a link between a spate of recent military accidents and budget caps, but said he could not draw a direct line at this time.
