MV Cape Ray Signals DTRA 'Mission Complete'

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency announces the successful completion of the Cape Ray's mission to destroy Syria's chemical weapons components at sea. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency/U.S. Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (DTRA/SCC-WMD) is pleased to announce the completion of the destruction of one-hundred percent of the Syrian chemical weapons materials transferred on-board the Cape Ray using the installed Field Deployable Hydrolysis System (FDHS). The accomplishments onboard the Cape Ray represent the first time chemical weapons have been destroyed aboard ship on the open sea. A proven technology, the hydrolysis system was turned into a field-deployable system for ship-board application in just 5 months.

Gallaudet Relieves Brown at Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command

Rear Adm. Timothy C. Gallaudet relieved Rear Adm. Brian B. Brown  as commander of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NAVMETOCCOM) in a traditional change of command ceremony held June 18 at Stennis Space Center. Gallaudet was promoted to the rank of rear admiral (lower half) just prior to the ceremony. Brown said he felt “blessed and lucky” to have worked with the Navy’s military and civilian oceanography workforce to perform a mission so critical to the warfighting effectiveness and readiness of the fleet and joint force despite personal hardships…

USN Accepts First MUOS Satellite for Operations

U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) has accepted the first Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite for initial operational use. MUOS is a next-generation narrowband tactical communications system designed to improve communications for U.S. forces on the move. Change at the helm for Indian Ocean-based Maritime Prepositioning Squadron

Navy Capt. Charles “Gene” Emmert has relieved Navy Capt. Wesley Brown as commander of Military Sealift Command’s Indian Ocean-based Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron Two. Emmert, the squadron’s 27th commander, accepted command during a ceremony on board MSC Maritime Prepositioning Force ship USNS SGT William R. Button in Diego Garcia’s lagoon. The commander of MPS Squadron Two has a staff of 10 active duty sailors and is responsible for the tactical control and readiness of the squadron’s current fleet of 12 government-owned and -chartered noncombatant cargo carriers.

Sullivan Named VP-Ops, N&MSD, NOC

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has named Paul F. Sullivan vice president of operations for its Naval and Marine Systems Division (N&MSD) at the company's Electronic Systems sector, effective immediately. In his new position, Sullivan will have executive responsibility for all phases of the division's Department of Defense and Homeland Security programs, along with division responsibility for strategy development, customer engagement, and Navy-related program execution. He will also oversee N&MSD's restricted programs and cross-company collaboration.

USS Louisiana Presented Omaha Trophy

The Blue and Gold crews of the USS Louisiana, (SSBN 743), were presented the 2006 Omaha Trophy Submarine Ballistic Missile Award by Gen. Kevin Chilton, commander, U.S. Strategic Command in a ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Wash. This award is presented to the ballistic missile submarine that demonstrates superior performance and commitment to strategic excellence. Senate Confirms Mullen, Cartwright for Top Military Positions

Bush Nominates Mullen, Cartwright to Top Military Posts

President Bush nominated Adm. Michael Mullen to serve as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Marine Corps Gen. James E. “Hoss” Cartwright as his Vice Chairman on June 28. Mullen currently serves as Chief of Naval Operations, and Cartwright serves as Commander, U.S. Strategic Command. If confirmed by the Senate, they will succeed Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Navy Adm. Edmund P. Giambastiani, vice chairman. Gates Recommends Mullen to Replace Pace as Chairman

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced June 8 that he will recommend that President Bush nominate Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen to replace Marine Gen. Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a Pentagon news conference, Gates said he also will recommend Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright for the position of vice chairman. Cartwright is the commander of U.S. Strategic Command. Navy Adm. Edmund P. Giambastiani Jr., the current vice chairman, announced his decision to retire last week. “I have become well acquainted with Admiral Mullen over the last six months and believe he has the strategic insight, experience and integrity to lead America’s armed forces,” Gates said.
