USS Los Angeles to be Decommissioned

USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) will arrive at the Port of Los Angeles, Wednesday, Jan. 20, for a final visit that includes a decommissioning ceremony Jan. 23. USS Los Angeles departed Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Jan. 14, and is stopping in Los Angeles en route to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for inactivation. The visit will include participation by the crew in numerous public events ongoing throughout the weekend. The Jan. 23 decommissioning ceremony will feature many former Los Angeles crewmembers, former Los Angeles Commanding Officer Rear Adm. (ret) John Shipway, Commodore of Submarine Squadron One Capt. Stan Robertson, Representative for the U.S. 46th District Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn.

Biodiesel Ferry, Samuel G. Fuqua Arrives

USS Arizona Ferry Boat #39-2, Samuel G. Fuqua, welcomed visitors on its maiden run Aug. 18 as the newest biodiesel boat to operate at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. It's the second of five new state-of-the-art biodiesel boats to debut in Pearl Harbor. The first, #39-1 John W. Finn, arrived in April to become the first Navy vessel in Hawaii to incorporate off-the-shelf clean fuel technology components. The new boats will eventually replace the existing 20-year-old U.S. Navy-operated tour boats that shuttle visitors to and from the USS Arizona Memorial as part of the National Park Service's (NPS) World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument tours.

USS Hopper Returns from Deployment

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) returned to her homeport of Naval Station Pearl Harbor April 23 following a three month deployment to the Western Pacific in support of the Mid-Pacific Surface Combatant Operational Employment program. Pearl Harbor Biodiesel Ferry

Naval Station Pearl Harbor and the National Park Service activated the first USS Arizona Memorial biodiesel ferry boat #39-1 John W. Finn during a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial and Visitor Center April 7. The John W. USS Tucson Returns to Pearl Harbor

USS Tucson (SSN 770) returned to Naval Station Pearl Harbor Monday, Dec. 15, following a 23-month absence that included a modernization period in Norfolk, numerous sea trials and a port visit in San Diego. "Everybody is happy to be back in Pearl Harbor," said Cmdr. Paul Spear, USS Tucson commanding officer. The submarine just completed a major overhaul in Norfolk. "Tucson has a new fire control system and a totally refurbished engine room as well as a lot of new gear on board," said Ensign John Chester Jr., Tucson junior officer.

Virginia-Class Sub Bound for Pearl Harbor

The commander of Submarine Force, U.S Pacific Fleet (SUBPAC) announced on Dec. 4 that USS Hawaii (SSN 776) will be the first Virginia-class submarine to be homeported at Naval Station Pearl Harbor this summer. "SUBPAC is thrilled to be welcoming the most technologically advanced submarine in the U.S. inventory to our ohana," said Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, commander, Submarine Force U.S. Commissioned May 5, 2007, Hawaii was the third Virginia-class attack submarine constructed and the first submarine to be named after the island state.

New Navy Contracts

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc., Honolulu, Hawaii, is being awarded $7,385,000 for firm-fixed-price task order #0009 under a previously awarded multiple award construction contract (N62742-04-D-1302) for the wharf repairs at Naval Station, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This project includes repairs and preservation to the pier superstructure, fender system, concrete supporting piles and concrete decking. The project also includes replacement of all mooring hardware and repair of all mechanical, electrical, and communications systems. Work will be performed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and is expected to be completed by February, 2010. Contract funds in the amount of $7,385,000 will expire at the end of the fiscal year. Three proposals were received for this task order.

100 Years of Women in the Navy

Throughout March 2008, Sailors will celebrate and recognize the many contributions of women to our Navy and nation during the 21st annual observance of Women's History Month. Women have been serving as an integral part of the Navy since the establishment of the Nurse Corps in 1908. Nine years later, the Navy authorized the enlistment of women as "Yeomanettes." In 1948, the Women's Armed Services Integration Act was signed, making it possible for women to enter the Navy in regular or reserve status. In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress, allowing for no separate management of men and women, authorized entry of enlisted women into all ratings, and opened Recruit Officer Training Command to women.

Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Visits Naval Station Pearl Harbor

Peter Pace, visited more than 500 military personnel assigned to commands throughout the Pearl Harbor area Aug. 17 for an all hands call at Sharkey Theater on Naval Station Pearl Harbor as part of his tour of military bases on the island of Oahu. The visit was part of Pace’s tour of military bases to thank military personnel for all they have done during his 40-year military career. “I have come a long way to say what is most important – thank you,” said Pace. Through his hour-long speech and response to questions, Pace regularly spoke on his admiration for the men and women who serve the country and their role in how the country operates. “Your job is important.

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company Awarded $11.5m Contract

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc., Honolulu, Hawaii, is being awarded $11.5m for firm-fixed-price Task Order #0007 under a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity multiple award construction contract (N62742-04-D-1302) for repair and improvements of Bravo Docks 12, 13, and 14 at Naval Station, Pearl Harbor.Work will be performed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and is expected to be completed by April 2009.Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is the contracting activity.

Willard Assumes Command of U.S. Pacific Fleet

USS Russell Returns to Homeport

The guided-missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59) returned home to Naval Station Pearl Harbor on April 7 after a three-month deployment with Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG). Cmdr. Brad Cooper, commanding officer of Russell, said he is very proud of the command’s flexibility and motivation to support its tasking. “We deployed in early February with the Ronald Reagan Strike Group as part of a surge deployment [of] forces moving to the Central Command region. The Reagan was the backbone of Western Pacific, engaging allies, participating in bi-lateral and multi-lateral exercises, and engaged in the U.S. Seventh Fleet maritime influence strategy,” Cooper said. Ronald Reagan Strike Group Makes Port Visit to Pearl Harbor

The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (RRCSG), pulled into Naval Station Pearl Harbor on April 9 for a scheduled port visit on the return leg of its 2007 deployment in support of operations in the Western Pacific. “The crew is excited to return to Hawaii because it means we are one step closer to home,” said Capt. Terry B. Kraft, Ronald Reagan’s commanding officer. RRCSG is comprised of USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 7, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14, USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7. The more than 6,000 Sailors assigned to the Ronald Reagan Strike Group deployed Jan. 27 from San Diego under the Navy’s Fleet Response Plan (FRP), which provides the U.S.

Coast Guard, Navy to Conduct Security Exercise

A flotilla of military and support vessels Tuesday will conduct a joint security exercise off of the entrance to Pearl Harbor. Persons viewing this exercise from shore or from other vessels should not be alarmed - this is only an exercise. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island along with small boats from Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Naval Submarine Support Command, and the Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Honolulu will exercise a variety of security scenarios. Additional support vessels include a Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel and several small boats and personal water craft from the Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific. These exercises will involve numerous high speed small boat maneuvers as well as flashing handheld lights and short blasts from air horns.

The Navy’s oldest active attack submarine, USS Los Angeles (SSN 688), held a ceremony to mark its 30th birthday Nov. 13, on the pier at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Cmdr. Erik Burian, Los Angeles commanding officer, cut the celebratory cake during the festivities, which included an awards ceremony and a barbecue on the pier for the crew and their families. The lead ship of her class, Los Angeles was commissioned Nov. 13, 1976. Since then, 47 more submarines have been commissioned in the class. The Los Angeles-class submarines incorporated improved sound quieting and a larger propulsion plant than previous classes and is capable of performing undersea and surface warfare, mining operations, special forces delivery, reconnaissance, carrier strike group support and intelligence collection.

Honolulu Says Farewell to Namesake Submarine

Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, Lt. Gov. James Aiona, and Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Gary Roughead joined past and current crew members of USS Honolulu (SSN 718) to bid farewell to the nuclear-powered attack submarine at a ceremony April 15, at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Keynote speaker, U.S. 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Jonathan Greenert, who commanded Honolulu from 1991 to 1993, said the submarine performed exceptionally well throughout its career. “She was consistently the most reliable ship in the squadron, whatever squadron she was in," he said. Inouye said Honolulu, and all other Los Angeles-class submarines, have served the Navy in a variety of roles. “These submarines constituted the front lines during the Cold War," he said.
