Richardson Confirmed as Next CNO

Adm. John M. Richardson, director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, was confirmed by the Senate as the 31st Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Aug. Richardson will replace Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert who has been CNO since September 2011. Vice Adm. Frank Caldwell, who was also confirmed by the Senate today, will succeed Richardson later this month as the director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. "I am honored and humbled to have been nominated and confirmed to succeed Adm. Greenert as our Navy's next chief of naval operations," Richardson said. "Adm.

Nomination for Next CNO Announced

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced today during a Pentagon press briefing that he has recommended Adm. John M. Richardson as the next Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). A career submarine officer, Richardson is currently director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. If confirmed, Richardson will replace Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert who has been CNO since September 2011. Greenert will retire this fall after 40 years of naval service. "John Richardson is one of our finest officers and I have great confidence that he is the right leader for our Navy," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. Greenert also praised Richardson if confirmed, "Admiral John Richardson is an ideal strategic leader to keep our Navy moving forward," he said.

International Seapower Symposium Kicks Off in Newport, R.I.

The 21st edition of the International Seapower Symposium (ISS) began Sept. 16 at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, R.I., with more than 170 representatives from 113 nations attending. Throughout the three-day symposium, naval leaders from around the world will attend presentations and take part in panel discussions relating to current, vital maritime topics such as enhancing coalition operations, future trends in maritime security, and implications of climate change on maritime security. There are also sessions scheduled to address specific geographic challenges navies face. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus addressed the group with opening remarks and stressed the importance of the conference's theme: Global Solutions to Common Maritime Challenges.

Huntington Ingalls Industries hosts Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert. Adm. Greenert met with company leadership and toured the amphibious assault ship America (LHA 6) at the company's Ingalls Shipbuilding division. "We're at Ingalls to see the home of shipbuilding for amphibious ships," Adm. Greenert said. "Shipbuilding is our future, and it's the Navy's future, and clearly Ingalls is a major part of that. We have to understand how to build effective and efficient ships.

US Navy CNO Casts Eye on NNS Warship Construction

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division hosted the Chief of Naval Operations for a tour of the shipyard. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert was briefed on the shipyard's current work and capabilities and met with shipbuilders. The admiral also toured the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to see the progress being made on the first-of-class ship and the advancements in shipbuilding enabled by 3-D modeling and design/build strategies.

Navy Bids Roughead Farewell, Greenert Takes Helm

With 38 years of service, Adm. Gary Roughead steps down from the position of Chief of Naval Operations during the change of command ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy, Sept. 23. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was the keynote speaker for the ceremony and highlighted Adm. Roughead's accomplishments during his naval career while thanking him for his leadership. "I don't think anyone can ever fully express how much we're going to miss Gary Roughead's counsel and absolutely unwavering commitment to the Navy [and] the United States," said Mabus. Mabus reviewed Roughead's career milestones including being one of only two admirals in the United States Navy to command both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets.

Carpenter First Woman President at SUNY Maritime

The State University of New York Board of Trustees on June 30 unanimously appointed Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USN, president of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. Admiral Carpenter is currently serving as the Commander of the Navy’s Warfare Development Command. The SUNY Board of Trustees voted on her appointment at a special meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2011. Rear Admiral Carpenter is the first woman to serve as president of  SUNY Maritime College. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) christened the eighth submarine of the Virginia class, California (SSN 781), at the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News, Va. Donna Willard, the ship's sponsor, performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine's hull. She is the wife of Adm. Robert F. Willard, the current Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command. Jackalyne Pfannenstiel, assistant secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, served as the keynote speaker.

USS San Francisco Skipper Reassigned

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- The commander of U.S. 7th Fleet, Vice Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, has directed Jan. 20 that the commanding officer of USS San Francisco (SSN 711), Cmdr. Kevin Mooney, be reassigned pending the results of an investigation into the sub’s grounding during operations in the Western Pacific Ocean. Mooney is reassigned to Submarine Squadron 15, based in Guam, pending the results of an investigation to determine the cause of the sub’s grounding Jan. 8 that resulted in the death of one Sailor and injuries to 23 others. Cmdr. Andrew Hale, Submarine Squadron 15 deputy commander, will assume the duties as commanding officer of San Francisco.

USS San Francisco Investigation Completed

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy announced May 9 the completion of the investigation into the Jan. 8 accident aboard the submarine USS San Francisco (SSN 711) that claimed the life of one Sailor. San Francisco struck an undersea mountain about 360 miles southeast of its Guam homeport because its leaders and watch teams failed to develop and execute a safe voyage plan, the command investigation into the incident concluded. "The findings of fact show that San Francisco, while transiting at flank (maximum) speed and submerged to 525 feet, hit a seamount that did not appear on the chart being used for navigation," the 124-page report said of the incident in the vicinity of the Caroline Islands.
