Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) announced that it has established a consortium with global liners, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, and ONE to launch joint services between Asia and west coast of South America. Previously, HMM operated three Asia-west coast of South America services with MSC, CMA-CGM, Hamburg Süd, Hapag-Lloyd, APL, and CSCL. The newly reorganized ‘Asia-west coast of South America’ joint services will connect Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan with the west coast of Mexico, Peru, Chile, Columbia through three loops starting at the beginning of April.

After its first year of cooperation, the members of THE Alliance announced the details for their enhanced product effective from April 2018. A new application for mobile devices which allows Sailors on-the-go access to many features of the Navy College Program (NCP) is available as of Feb. "The Navy College Program app offers Sailors mobile access to voluntary education planning tools, a counseling scheduler, and applications previously available only through the Navy College Offices or the Virtual Education Center," said Lt. Cmdr. The members of THE Alliance announced the details of the plan for their product starting from April 2017. THE Alliance plans to deploy a fleet of more than 240 modern ships in the Asia /Europe, North Atlantic and Trans-Pacific trade lanes including the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf/Red Sea. Hapag-Lloyd launches “THE Alliance” with old and new partners – Customers benefit from additional sailings and direct connections. The container shipping industry is undergoing a period of reorganization – and Hapag-Lloyd is assuming a leading role in the process. The carrier has just teamed up with five other shipping companies to forge one of the world’s largest container shipping alliances. Plans call for the new alliance – appropriately named “THE Alliance” – to officially begin operations in April 2017. Together, the member shipping companies currently possess approximately 3.5 million TEU, or some 18 percent of the global container fleet capacity.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) today announced the launch of new joint services with Maersk Line (ML) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) between the major trading hub of Asia and key ports in East coast of South America. MOL’s existing service ‘CSW’ will be upgraded into 2 strategic services to be jointly operated by the 3 shipping lines for improved product efficiency, wider connectivity with our existing network over the key transshipment ports and more direct port coverage in Asia and East coast of South America. The CMA CGM Group and Hamburg Süd have reached an agreement to further enhance their cooperation, adding several new initiatives to the already existing joint services between North Europe and both East- and West coasts of South America. Since mid-January Hamburg Süd has taking slots between Asia and the Caribbean on CMA CGM’s PEX 2 service as well as on the Brazex service which provides it with a connection to Manaus from the Caribbean. Maersk and MSC have just announced a mega vessel sharing agreement that will replace their failed P3 alliance early next year. It will be smaller, and compare well in size with the G6 and CKYH alliances – but what about CMA CGM? Maersk and MSC have taken on board China’s objections to the P3 alliance by coming up with a new vessel sharing arrangement called 2M that they hope will be agreed by all regulatory authorities before the beginning of next year. Out has gone CMA CGM, in order to bring the agreement’s market share down to more acceptable levels, and in has come a much simpler joint co-ordination committee to monitor the carriers’ network on a daily basis.

So, Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM will not be allowed to form what would have been the largest mega-alliance in the shipping industry. But what are the implications, and what is likely to happen next? Drewry Martime Research consider these questions in their latest Container Insight Weekly. China’s regulators have blocked the P3 mega-alliance between Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM on the grounds that it infringes the country’s competition laws between Asia and Europe, particularly with respect to the lines’ combined market share of 46.7%. The law enforcers appear to believe that the cost reductions gained by the P3 carriers would either have been offset by this unacceptably high risk of market concentration, or would not have been passed back to shippers satisfactorily.

COSCO, K Line, YangMing, Hanjin and Evergreen Line announced that the five parties have agreed in principle to establish a shipping alliance. To be operational only on the trades between Asia and Europe, including the Mediterranean region, it will be called the CKYHE Alliance. The lines intend to formally begin the new Alliance as of 1st March 2014 subject to compliance with the relevant regulations. The CKYHE will commence operations in mid April with six joint services operating between Asia and Northern Europe and four loops dedicated to the Asia-Mediterranean route. In view of continuous challenging trading conditions effective from July 2013 CMA CGM, Maersk Line, Hamburg Süd, CSAV, China Shipping Container Lines and Hanjin will restructure their services between the Far East and South America East Coast by launching three new joint services. -ASAS 2/NGX 2/SEAS 2/ASAX 2: Currently operated by Maersk Line, Hamburg Süd, CSAV, CMA CGM and China Shipping Container Lines. -SEAS 1/ASAX 1: Currently operated by CSAV, CMA CGM and China Shipping Container Lines. -ASAS 1/NGX 1: Currently operated by Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd.

The Evergreen Line and China Shipping Container Lines have agreed to cooperate on Asia-US West Coast, Asia-Europe and Asia-Mexico-US East Coast containership services commencing June 2009. The agreement was signed by First Vice Group Chairman of the Evergreen Group, S S Lin and Chairman of the China Shipping Container Lines, S D Lee on 27 May in Shanghai, China. Evergreen upgrades its Hong Kong, Taiwan-US West Coast service (service code: HTW for Evergreen and AAS for CSCL) of five 8,000 TEU vessels. Kaohsiung - Xiamen - Hong Kong - Yantian -Los Angeles -Oakland - Kaohsiung. China Shipping upgrades its North/Central China to US West Coast service (service code: CPS for Evergreen and AAC for CSCL) of five 8,000 TEU vessels.

Mediterranean Shipping Company, together with Maersk Line and CMA-CGM, the world’s three major shipping operators, are in the process of reorganizing their respective services between China and the US West Coast which will result in the launch of three separate joint services to be introduced in April 2008. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company announced its new services in line with this development. The first service, which MSC has named Eagle Express, will cover Central China, South China, calling at Hong Kong, Yantian, Kaohsiung, Shanghai, Qingdao and Los Angeles. The second service, called the New Orient Express, will cover Central and North China, calling at Dalian, Tianjin Xingang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Long Beach and Oakland.

The services start with practical security consultancy from which MPS develop the company specific ISPS documentation and manuals. The manuals are developed within the Vector ISM Manager software which has been expanded to suit the requirements of ISPS. The system allows manuals to be comprised of documents that are ship specific, apply to groups of ships or to the fleet and manages the distribution to the vessels with a complete audit trail of sending and acknowledged receipt on board. However the system is much more than the documentation. MPS also specify the appropriate check lists and reporting to be carried out within the Vector Management System thereby ensuring that once implemented the ships security system is actively used and the results reported ashore.

The member lines of the Grand Alliance (GA) and The New World Alliance (TNWA) announced their agreement to cooperate on key trades from early 2006. This cooperation is designed to significantly broaden the respective Alliances' capabilities, network coverage and schedule frequency, with improved service efficiency and wider choice for customers of the respective Alliances. Italian classification society and certification group RINA and the China Classification Society (CCS) have joined forces to deliver quality management system expertise to small and medium-size Chinese shipyards which intend to build ships for international trade. The two class societies have set up a joint venture company, Yizhong Marine Technical Services, based in Shanghai. It will assist between five and ten yards in its first year. The yards, suitable for building ships up to 50,000 dwt, are those which currently build only to internal Chinese standards but which wish to enter the international shipbuilding market. Yizhong will train the management and help them build and run a complete quality management system capable of building ships to international classed standards.

A variety of Naval Sea Systems Command programs will make their debut with the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Battle Group, which recently departed for a six-month deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The battle group deployed with several Navy, next generation technologies, including the Man Overboard Indicator (MOBI) on Lincoln and several other ships in the battle group, Naval Fires Network (NFN) throughout the battle group and the Area Air Defense Control (AADC) aboard USS Shiloh (CG 67). using current resources and the latest technology. a potential for falling overboard. aid in the detection, location and recovery of Sailors who fall overboard. targets. with Army and Air Force sites in the Southwest Asia area of operations.

Marine salvage and response companies Donjon Marine Co., Inc. (Hillside, NJ) and SMIT Americas (Houston, TX) announced a new joint venture known as Donjon-SMIT, An OPA-90 Alliance. This new response organization has been created specifically for compliance and response services as required by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA-90). The Joint Venture will begin providing services on December 31, 2004. Donjon and SMIT will continue to provide non-OPA-90 salvage and related services independent of one another, as they have for many years.
