Vigor Wins $30 Mln Ship Maintenance Contract

U.S. West Coast shipbuilder and repair provider Vigor Marine has been awarded a $30,269,098 firm-fixed-price contract for a 120-calendar day post shakedown shipyard availability of the expeditionary sea base ship Miguel Keith (T-ESB 5), owned and operated by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command.Work will be performed in Portland, Ore. and is expected to be complete by December 2020.Work will include the furnishing of general services, shipboard access, clean and gas free tank voids and cofferdams…

CMR to Supply CCTV Systems for Newbuild Semi-Submersibles

Marine automation and instrumentation specialists CMR Group said it has secured an order from industrial conglomerate Kongsberg Maritime AS for new closed-circuit television (CCTV) video surveillance systems for two new semi-submersible heavy lift, construction and accommodation vessels. The deal, which includes spare parts and maintenance support, will see the supply and installation of CCTV systems for the OOS Serooskerke and OOS Walcheren, which are being built for China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd. (CMHI).

Ocean Alliance Calls APM Terminals Port Elizabeth

APM Terminals Port Elizabeth welcomed the 8,700 TEU capacity CMA CGM Bianca, marking the first call of the weekly Ocean Alliance US East Coast Loop 3 Service, providing direct service to the US East Coast from ports in China and Southeast Asia. After a formal welcoming ceremony held at the facility, APM Terminals Port Elizabeth hosted a reception for senior executives of Ocean Alliance member lines to commemorate the occasion. The CMA CGM Bianca arrived and departed on schedule with a berth productivity of 129.2 moves per hour (MPH) for the 4,393 container moves at the terminal, for 30.1 gross MPH, and average dwell for rail-destined containers of less than one day. Until recently, container ships calling the Port of New York & New Jersey were mainly of the 5,000-8,000 TEU size class.

New Dredger for North Carolina’s Coastal Waterways

The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently took delivery of a new, fully customized cutter suction dredge, which it christened the Dredge Manteo in a ceremony held April 28, 2016, at the at the NCDOT State Shipyard in Manns Harbor, N.C.. The 154-foot state-of-the-art pipeline dredge, designed and built by DSC Dredge, based in Reserve, La., will work to keep North Carolina’s state-maintained intercostal ferry channels clear, from the Cape Fear River near Wilmington to Currituck Sound near the North Carolina-Virginia state line.

DNV GL: Enhancing Fire Safety on Ro-Ro Decks

DNV GL has issued a report on fire incidents in Ro-Ro spaces to address growing safety concerns in this segment and provide guidance to shipowners. DNV GL’s “Fires on Ro-Ro decks” has examined fires within Ro-Ro spaces on Ro-Pax vessels, vehicle carriers and general Ro-Ro cargo vessels and has identified 35 such fires between 2005 and 2016. A previous DNV GL paper on Ro-Ro fires, published in 2005, had counted 25 fires in Ro-Ro spaces between 1990 and 2003. “We would like to contribute with facts, as well as with our experience. Hopefully, this can be useful input to operators and legislators in order to focus on the relevant items and make the right decisions,” says Hans Eivind Siewers, Segment Director Passenger Ships & Ro-Ro at DNV GL – Maritime.

Six teenagers who survived South Korea's worst maritime disaster in 44 years told on Monday how classmates helped them float free as water flooded their cabins despite crew instructions to stay put even as their ferry sank, killing more than 300 people. Defense: USS Cole Bomber Should Not Face Death

Defense lawyers for the Saudi man charged with masterminding the 2000 USS Cole bombing that killed 17 American sailors argued on Friday he should not face the death penalty because the murders were not premeditated. The move was among several pre-trial motions heard in the murder case against Abd al-Rahim al Nashiri at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, viewed by closed-circuit television at Fort Meade. The charges Nashiri is faced with - among them murder, terrorism and conspiracy - carry the death penalty.

Before any keel is ever laid, naval architects spend considerable time in determining how exactly the vessel must come together. All great marine craft still need skilled and competent crews to make them maneuver and perform as their design intended. With their feet on the deck plates, crewmen have perhaps the best insight as to what works and what does not when it comes to highly functional vessel design. It happens more often than vessel owners will care to admit, but complete specifications have been written and contracts signed without bringing a single mariner to the table.

MS&D 2009 Hamburg

The latest surveillance, defence and security equipment is presented by the 60 exhibitors at MS&D 2009, the international conference and exhibition on Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D), to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from 30 September to 2 October 2009. The exhibits include sophisticated optical and acoustic sensors, which have substantially improved the automated monitoring and control technology of security and defence equipment and systems. Thus the exhibiting companies, most of them from the exclusive circle of defence system manufacturers, are contributing to the protection of international shipping. No Cost-Share Security Grants

The Passenger Vessel Association called member attention to the recently enacted economic stimulus bill contains $150m for a new round of financing for competitive Port Security Grants. Program Guidance and Application Kits are available online (www.fema.gov/grants). Many PVA members will be eligible to apply. Several changes from past grant rounds may make these grants potentially more attractive to PVA members. •    There will be no applicant cost share required. Federal grant funds will finance 100 percent of eligible projects. •    Any owner or operator of a MTSA-regulated vessel or facility is eligible to apply. This means that if a vessel or facility is required by the Coast Guard to have an approved security plan, the owner or operator can submit a grant application.

USS New Hampshire Joins Fleet

USS New Hampshire (SSN 778), the Navy's newest nuclear-powered attack submarine and the fifth of the Virginia-class, was brought to life Oct. 25 during a commissioning ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Cheryl McGuinness served as the ship's sponsor, and gave the order to man the ship. McGuinness is the widow of Lt. Cmdr. Thomas McGuinness, a veteran Navy pilot and a co-pilot on American Airlines Flight 11 that was flown into the of the by terrorists Sept. 11, 2001. More than 3,500 guests, including the crew's family and friends, submarine veterans and shipyard workers, attended the ceremony welcoming the submarine as the fourth naval vessel to be named .

Cummins Auxiliaries for DP Anchor Handler

Sarawak Slipways of Miri, Sarawak East Malaysia has delivered the 1179 gross tonne FPSO support vessel OMS Terra Nova. A pair of mains engines each generating 1838 Kw (2518 hp) at 750 RPM power the Niigata Z-Drives on the ABS-classed dynamic positioning vessel. In the focsle area a 700 hp Cummins KTA19-M4 engine powers a retractable HRP azimuthing bow thruster as an essential component of the vessel's dynamic positioning system. For electrical requirements, the 50 by 13.8-meter vessel has a pair of Cummins QSM11-powered 250 kW generator sets. Aft of the main house a double drum MacGregor Plimsoll double drum anchor handling winch is completely enclosed. A closed circuit television system allows the wheelhouse to monitor action around the winch.

All American Marine Delivers the R/V Manta

All American Marine has delivered an 82-ft.Teknicraft research catamaran built under contract for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The R/V Manta will operate in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, located 100 miles offshore, directly south of the Louisiana-Texas boarder. Port of Houston Awards $12M Security Contract

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) commission approved a recommendation to award a contract to TRC-ECON Capital, L.P. for security infrastructure enhancements. Under the estimated $12 million, three-year design/build contract, TRC-ECON is expected to prepare a security master plan and implement the design and construction of fences, closed-circuit television systems, facility access controls and other security enhancements. The commission also approved a recommendation to execute a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will enable Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) to help PHA develop and implement the first security management system (SMS) at a U.S. port.

Lockheed Martin Achieves Milestones for PAWSS

Lockheed Martin completed key milestones for the U.S. Coast Guard's Ports and Waterways Safety System (PAWSS), enhancing safety in New York Harbor and other major waterways. The five milestones involved Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) work for the Port of New York and New Jersey, Port of New Orleans, Port of Valdez, AK, Port of Houston and Galveston, and Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Marine Software: What’s New?

There are a number of computer programs and hardware that promises to make marine vessels more productive and interactive. For example, Maxsea, Marstons Mill, Mass. has a module that connects their chart plotter to the sensors of a dredge to record the vessel's track. The track can be displayed on the chart plotter and the data collected can be directly exported in the ASC II format for use by other data processing software. The seabed outline is displayed "live" in 2-D and 3-D and the data is recorded. Need a tough bulkhead-mounted PC? Comark of Medfield, Mass. has a unit with the enclosure made of marine aluminum with an epoxy powder finish and is rated for a Nema 12 environment.

Lockheed Martine to Provide Waterway Safety System for 2004 Olympics

Lockheed Martin will provide an extension to the Greek National Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) under a $1 million sub-contract from the Hellenic Telecommunications & Electronics industry, INTRACOM. The extension will support the country’s port security infrastructure for the 2004 Olympic Games. The Games are expected to bring 16,000 athletes and more than four million spectators to Greece. Numerous spectators are expected to move daily through the ferry ports of Rafina and Lavrio, located on the east coast of the Greek peninsula, which will be equipped with new regional Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) monitoring centers. Lockheed Martin will provide two radar systems to help monitor the waterway during the Olympic Games.

Port Of Canaveral Adds New Directors

Continued growth and organizational restructuring has prompted the Canaveral Port Authority to add three new staff directors, including two newly created positions. Margi Starkey, the former Assistant Director of Finance, has been promoted to the new position of Director of Accounting. She will assist the Chief Financial Officer and oversee the installation and implementation of a new accounting system. Starkey has been employed with the Canaveral Port Authority for 10 years. Jerry Simon, the former Chief of Security, has been promoted to the new position of Director of Security in a reorganization of the Operations Department. Simon will run the Port's Security staff, which is responsible for badging and closed circuit television monitoring.
