PROPULSION: ‘Power’ to the People

Interstate-McBee brings affordable aftermarket replacement parts to a marine sector thirsting for new ways to bolster the bottom line. As freight rates, subchapter M and the advent of EPA Tier IV requirements all impact the market, an affordable overhaul of an existing engine is one way to find real relief. A recent report, entitled “Impact of Updated Service Life Estimates on Harbor Craft and Switcher Locomotive Emission Forecasts and Cost-Effectiveness,” found the average Category 2 workboat remains in service for 50 years, instead of the 23-year lifespan estimated by the EPA in the 2008 Heavy Duty Locomotive and Marine Rule. A longer service life reduces the fleet’s turnover rate to cleaner…

Denet Towing Repower Saves 20% in Fuel

Jerrold Denet, owner of Denet Towing in Boothville, La., is as straight forward as they come. When asked why he started his towing company in 1982, the response was incredulous: “Why did I start it? When asked why he repowered his M/V Ocean Pride from a 12-cylinder  V with a pair of six-cylinder in—line Scania DI-13 continuous duty engines with 450hp @ 1800 rpm through Twin Disc MGX 516 marine gears, the answer was similarly blunt: “This is where my money is best spent,” said Denet. “We are producing more power and burning less fuel.

On Patrol with the U.S. Coast Guard

Building programs continue, spanning the full range of missions, despite budget concerns. Amidst all the talk of Beltway budget cutbacks and sequestration, the U.S. Coast Guard is quietly investing approximately $30 billion in major acquisition projects to modernize its physical assets. The process of recapitalizing these older and difficult-to-maintain assets has never been an easy task, and the Coast Guard has seen its share of bumps along the way. For example, the initially messy Deepwater debacle initially kicked off what has evolved into today’s more successful recapitalization process, now run by the Coast Guard’s Acquisition Directorate, which stood up in July 2007.

New Inertia-Engaged Turbine Air Starter from TDI

TDI announced the introduction of a new, inertia-engaged turbine air starter designed to improve the reliability of mid size engines (up to 4,882 CID/80 Liters) on marine vessels, mine haul trucks and critical applications like emergency generator sets and fire pumps. The signature characteristic of the vaneless, TurboTwin T50-I is the 100% starting performance it delivers because of the inertia engagement. “With inertia-engaged air starters there is never an abutment causing an abandoned start attempt, meaning the design of the air starter assures pinion engagement every time. This translates to 100% starting reliability,” states Dave Rawlins, TDI Senior Product Manager. “We have tens of thousands of inertia-engaged starters in the field.
