Coast Guard, Agency Partners Locate Sunken Barge off Nahant

The Coast Guard and partner agencies located the missing barge, Dredge 200, Wednesday after it capsized and sank earlier this week in Broad Sound approximately two miles southeast of Nahant.The barge's location was confirmed by a contracted company using multi-beam sonar just north of the North Channel, the major shipping lane into Boston Harbor, in approximately 100-feet of water.Close coordination with the Boston Harbor Pilots was crucial to ensure maritime commerce impacts…

Coast Guard Urges Caution after Barge Capsizes near Nahant

The Coast Guard is warning mariners to use caution and avoid the North and South Boston Main Channels after a barge carrying construction equipment capsized and possibly sank Sunday night approximately two miles southeast of Nahant.The captain of tug boat Big Jake notified the Coast Guard at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday that two of five barges they were towing had broken free and were adrift. Crew members from Coast Guard Station Point Allerton and Coast Guard Cutter Key Largo responded to the scene along with the tug boats Smith Predator, Justice, and Kendall J. Hebert.While Big Jake was being escorted to Hull two more barges broke free bringing the total number of adrift barges to four.The three tug boats each located a barge and brought them to safe havens.

Box Ship Breaks from Mooring in Boston

The U.S. Coast Guard said it is investigating how a containership broke free from its mooring in Boston on Wednesday morning.   The Coast Guard, along with Massport Fire Department, Boston Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and port tugs responded to 1,065-foot vessel, Helsinki Bridge, that broke free at the Paul W. Conley Container Terminal at around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.   Terminal workers aboard the ship at the time were able to safely disembark, and no injuries or pollution have been reported, the Coast Guard said.   The incident caused some damage to the pier, local media reported.   A docking pilot boarded the vessel and worked with the ship's crew to escort the Helsinki Bridge to Broad Sound where it remains anchored.

Vessel Operators Sentenced for Drowning Death

Two men were sentenced in federal court in Boston on manslaughter charges stemming from the drowning death of a visiting Irish student that occurred in the summer of 2001. United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan; Rear Admiral Vivian Crea, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard First District; Michael D. O'Keefe, Cape & Islands District Attorney; Colonel Thomas G. Coast Guard, Massachusetts to Further Safeguard State Waterways

The Coast Guard and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts today announced the signing of a new partnership agreement that will help the Coast Guard and Massachusetts state law enforcement officers work together more effectively to ensure the safety and security of the Commonwealth's waters.
