Vietnam Seizes Chinese Fuel Ship

Vietnam's coast guard has seized a Chinese vessel for intruding into its territorial waters, say local media. The ship, carrying more than 100,000 litres of fuel, was stopped near the northern maritime border last week. Vietnamese media say the crew admitted they were supplying fuel to Chinese fishing boats in the area. The government-owned Vietnam News Agency said the seized vessel had been disguised as a fishing boat. The report comes amid accusations from Malaysia and Indonesia that Chinese fishing vessels, backed by the Chinese coast guard, are intruding into what the countries consider as their sovereign waters. There has been no comment from China.

Vietnam Shipping Firm Corruption Trial Opens

The Hanoi People's Court in Vietnam's has opened a three-day hearing of the corruption charge against former chairman of Vietnam's National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) Duong Chi Dung and 9 others, reports Xinhua. According to the indictment, Duong Chi Dung and the nine other employees have been charged with deliberately violating state regulations on economic management and causing serious consequences through the embezzlement of state property. Specifically, Dung and the other defendants violated regulations by purchasing a used floating dock from abroad, which did not meet licensing or registration requirements, at higher price than real value in 2007-2008, causing a loss of almost 367-billion Vietnamese dong (US$17.4-million).

China Cruise Ship to Visit Disputed Islands

China's plans to sail a cruise ship to the Paracels Islands in the South China Sea ahead of the nation's coming May Day holiday likely to escalate tensions. China is planning to let tourists visit the Xisha Islands (the name China has given to the Paracels Archipelago) ahead of the forthcoming May Day holiday, according to  Vietnam's Thanhnien News, citing a  China state news agency Xinhua  report. An unnamed 47,000 tons cruise ship owned by Haihang Group with accommodation for 1,965 passengers is ready for sailing. The official Vietnam News Agency claims the announcement violates Vietnam’s sovereignty and is against the spirit of the talks in which China committed to fully follow the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).

Vietnamese Fisherman Salvage 'Marie Celeste' Ship

Fishermen discover abandoned fully loaded cargo ship, and successfully tow it to their home base. The ship, Hai Dong 27, was discovered abandoned and adrift by fishermen from Hoang Hoa district of Thanh Hoa province, subsequently a dozen fishing boats towed it over 140 nm to the shore of Hoang Truong commune, Hoang Hoa district. Seven fishing boats were involved in the towage operation. Light was cast on the mystery by an earlier report by the Vietnam News Agency that on the night of January 20, the same ship owned by Hai Dong Co., Ltd.

Vinashin to Build Shipyard

Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder, Vinashin, has been greenlighted to build a $81m shipyard in the northern port city of Hai Phong, according to Vietnam News Agency. Work on the Vinashin An Duong in Thuy Nguyen district is due to begin late this year and slated for completion by 2009. Vinashin is also set to spend $94m on rebuilding the Cua Viet seaport in the central Quang Tri province. It will turn Cua Viet into a 300-400 ha port complex with a shipyard, ecotourism facilities, a golf course, and a wharf to accommodate 100,000-ton ships. Denmark Promises Vietnam for Strong Support on Development

The Danish government was committed to implementing the Denmark-Vietnam Cooperation Development Strategy for 2006-2010,said Danish Prime Minister at a meeting in Hanoi. During the period, Denmark's aid projects and programs for Vietnam would give priority to trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, environment, and administrative reform. “They would focus especially on socio-economic development and poverty reduction in remote areas,” Bendtsen continued. Hung hailed the tangible benefits Danish assistance had brought, helping Vietnam achieve its socio-economic development targets. He expected bilateral trade to go up and Denmark's direct investment in Vietnam to exceed $1b.

Vietnamese Shipbuilder Aims for Record Production this Year

According to reports, Vietnamese state-run giant shipbuilder has targeted $1B in production value this year and aims to double it by 2010 through expansion. The corporation planned to expand its nationwide shipyards in a bid to build up three shipbuilding clusters in the northern, central and southern region, Lam added. The northern cluster would focus on building container ships and oil tankers of around 70,000-DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage); ships of between 250,000-300,000 DWT in the central area; and ships of 30,000 DWT in the southern cluster. The corporation is planning to purchase designs of ships and shipbuilding technology from advanced global shipbuilding companies in Japan, Poland and the Republic of Korea.

Vinashin to Build Vessels for Israel

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (Vinashin) and its subsidiary, the Ha Long Shipbuilding Plant, signed Tuesday a $1b deal to build eight vessels to carry autos for Israel. Israeli Ray Car Carried Limited Company has ordered the deal. The vessels, designed by Italian Naval Progetti company, are measured 185.6m long, 32.26m wide, and 36.56m high each. The Ha Long plant plans to launch the first vessel by September 2008. Vinashin has inked a number of major contracts to build vessels for various customers of Japan, the Republic of Korea, Europe and America. Another Vinashin affiliate in the port city of Hai Phong won in March a $2 million contract to outfit five cruise ships owned by Raon Group of the Czech Republic…

Vietnam Builder Wins Ship Contract

The Pha Rung Shipyard Company, under the Vietnam Ship Building Industry Corporation (Vinashin), on Oct. 9 signed a contract to build five ships for the Forturne Marine Company of the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency. This contract is significant, as it is Vinashin's first contract to export ships to the RoK. The 110 x 8.2 m, 6,500-ton ships will each cost approximately $11 million. Work for building the first ship is scheduled to begin in late 2005, with the ship transferred to the RoK 18 months later. After successfully building the 6,300-toe ship, Cai Lan 2, the Pha Rung Shipyard Company has won two consecutive contracts to build eight ships to be exported to the United Kingdom and five others to the RoK.-Enditem.
