Vietnam to Build Research Ship Indegenously

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved a decision to build specialized ships for maritime research and survey purposes only in local shipyards associated with Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC). From now onwards only member companies of the Hanoi-based SBIC, previously known as Vinashin, are allowed to join those tenders to secure the rights to build such ships. Prime Minister Dung has assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to actively work with the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance to allocate necessary capital for the project. Troubled Shipbuilder has Another New Chief

According to a report from VietNamNet Bridge, there has been yet another change at the top at the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, with Truong Van Tuyen taking over as general director from acting chief Nguyen Quoc Anh. Tuyen, is a former general director of the state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and the current head of the Dung Quat oil refinery. Anh had taken over from Tran Quang Vu August 30 after the latter was suspended and then arrested on charges of mismanaging state assets while serving as the head of a Vinashin subsidiary in the early 2000s. SMM Set for Hamburg

At the beginning of 2008, the order book was estimated by the British shipbuilding market experts of Lloyd's Register - Fairplay (LRF) at 10,055 ships ordered, and 329.7m gross tons (GT). By the beginning of July those figures were up more than 10 percent to 11,200 newbuildings and 363 million GT â€“ a new high. So the maritime equipment suppliers among the total of 1,950 exhibitors from 55 nations will have full order books to show at SMM 2008. This premier fair of world shipbuilding will for the first time occupy all eleven exhibition halls of the New Hamburg Trade Fair at the 23rd shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology, international Trade Fair Hamburg, to be held from September 23 to 26, which means more exhibition space than ever before, at 87,000 square meters.

Vinashin Scraps $1b Contract

The State-owned Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) has decided to scrap plans to invest $1 billion in a $5 billion steel mill joint venture with 's POSCO, as part of the government efforts to curb rising inflation.  The planned POSCO-Vinashin Steel Complex, located on a 970 hectares area of land in the central province of Khanh Hoa's Van Phong Bay, formed part of the Asian steel giant's ambitious goal to link a `steel belt'' from its home-turf, India, China and Vietnam. Graig Extends Cooperation With Vinashin

Graig Group is to build on its recent fifteen-ship order in Vietnam by developing series production of a full range of modern-design bulk carriers at Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) yards. The series will range from handysize up to capesize. Speaking after announcement of the Strategic Alliance formed with Vinashin on Friday February 27, Graig CEO Hugh Williams said, "We see significant potential here in Vietnam, and we will be working together with our Vinashin partners to meet the growing demand for modern bulk carriers. The success of our Diamond 53 handymax project in China and in Vietnam proves that owners want well-thought-out and strong vessels at good prices. We will shortly be announcing new sizes of the Diamond range for Graig and its partners.

MAN B&W Adds Vietnam Licensee

At a ceremony in Hanoi on November 8, 2004, a "Licence and Co-operation Agreement" was signed by Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) and MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Denmark. The new agreement, which was signed by Vinashin Chairman & C.E.O. Mr Pham Thanh Binh and MAN B&W Executive Vice President Dr Peter Sunn Pedersen at a televised ceremony in Hanoi, will provide Vinashin with technology and support for the production of MAN B&W two-stroke diesel engines for the growing Vietnamese shipbuilding industry. The agreement is a logical consequence of the Vietnamese government's decision to build up the country's shipbuilding industry, which has already manifested itself in an impressive inflow of orders from Vietnamese and foreign owners.

Wärtsilä Wins Vietnam Order

Wärtsilä received an order for a propulsion package from Vietnam in September 2007. The contract was awarded by the Ben Kien Shipyard in Haiphong and involves the supply of a propulsion package for a 564 TEU multi-purpose carrier to be built for Hai Duong Shipbuilding & Shipping Company, both companies being subsidiaries of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin Group). The vessel, designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China, has a length of 115.0 m, and a moulded breadth of 20.8 m. The Wärtsilä propulsion package will comprise an eight-cylinder Wärtsilä 38 diesel engine, 4.40 m-diameter four-bladed controllable-pitch (CP) propeller, shafting, reduction gearbox, stern tube and shaft seals.

Vinashin Will Supply 6S50MC-C Main Engines

Doosan Engine signed a deal with the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), Hanoi, Vietnam to supply 6 6S50MC-C Main Engines at the client company’s headquarter. The agreement signing ceremony was attended by Seniro Vice President SOo Joon Lee of Doosan Engine and President Mr. N. Q. Ahn of Vinashin and other personnel.

Wärtsilä Orders Propulsion Systems

Wärtsilä Corporation is gaining an increasing volume of business from Vietnam for ship propulsion systems. The latest contract to be awarded in April by Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) is for propulsion systems to be installed in five chemical tankers to be built for Iason Hellenic Shipping Co Ltd, Greece, at the Pha Rung shipyard in Haiphong. The equipment will be delivered during 2008-2010. Each vessel will be equipped by Wärtsilä with a five-bladed fixed-pitch propeller of 4.30m diameter, shafting, stern-tube including seals and bearings and an intermediate shaft bearing. A greater scope of supply will be delivered by Wärtsilä to Vinashin for eight car carriers to be built for Ray Car Carriers Ltd, Israel.

Vinashin to Build Wartsila Engines

Wärtsilä and Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) signed a license agreement for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä low-speed marine engines in Vietnam. The agreement was signed by Pham Thanh Binh, Chairman & CEO of Vinashin and Mr Martin Wernli, President of Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. The agreement grants Vinashin the right to manufacture certain types of Wärtsilä modern low-speed engine types between 48 and 82 cm bore size at their works in Vietnam. The first delivery of a Wärtsilä engine is scheduled for the beginning of 2010, with production building up to a targeted annual output of 30 to 40 engines. At the same time Wärtsilä Corporation announced it is expanding its representation in Vietnam by opening a branch office today in Hanoi.

Bach Dang Shipbuilding Co. Delivers Bulk Carrier

The first of a series of eight 22,500-ton ships to be built under a contract between the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) and the Vietnam National Shipping Lines Corporation (Vinalines) was delivered on March 27. The Golden Falcon Ship, built by the Bach Dang Shipbuilding Company – an affiliate of Vinashin, was launched since November 2006. The cargo ship was designed by VINAKITA, a joint venture between Vinashin and Japan’s KITADA, with a 6,230HP main engine. It was built under the supervision of NK, a Japanese registration agency. The 153.2m-long and 26m-wide ship is the biggest bulk carrier built by the Bach Dang Shipbuilding Company and will be operated by Falcon Shipping Company – a subsidiary of Vinalines which specialises in transporting petroleum and gas.

Vinashin to Build Six Transnational Express Vessels

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) announced its plan to build six express vessels to cover the north-south route. The 160m-long ships will be built at an estimated cost of $1.5-2b. Each ship will be capable of transporting 2,000 passengers, reaching a speed of 29 nautical miles per hour. Saigon Shipmarin Builds First Cargo Vessels for Japan

The Saigon Shipbuilding and Maritime Industry Company (Saigon Shipmarin) has started building two 8,000-ton cargo vessels for Japan. These are the first cargo vessels that Saigon Shipmarin, a member of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), has built for foreign customers. They are expected to be completed by the end of 2007. The company has built 15,000-tonne barges and two 6,800-ton cargo vessels which are expected to be launched soon. Saigon Shipmarin has won a bidding package to repair a 1,200-tonne floating crane and a ship for VietsovPetro. In addition, the company is repairing a 32,000-ton vessel for Singapore.

Vinashin Sets Up Joint Venture with Dutch Partner

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) has signed a contract with its Dutch partner, Damen Shipbuilding Corporation, to set up a shipyard in the northern port city of Hai Phong. The 42-ha Damen-Vinashin shipyard will be built at an estimated cost of $39 million. It expected to take two years to build. Bach Dang Shipyard Delivers Tanker

The Bach Dang shipbuilding company, a subsidiary of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), delivered a 13,500-ton oil tanker to the Vinashin Vien Duong shipping and forwarding company on December 25. The Vinashin Sea oil tanker, the biggest ever built in Vietnam so far, is 145.3 metres long, 20.8 metres wide and 11.20 metres high. Vinashin Posts Revenues

According to reports, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) reported an output value of over $567m and revenues of over $351m in the first nine months of 2006. The figures represented year-on-year increases of 40.7 percent and 73.3 percent respectively. In the period, Vinashin signed nearly $5b in contracts to build ships for partners from Japan, Germany, England, Poland and Israel. The corporation is under negotiations with Japanese and German partners, such as Kanematsu, Sojist and Mitsubishi, to build cargo vessels with capacities ranging from 8,700 tonnes to 56,300 tonnes and 900-1,100 TEU container ships. It is also cooperating with the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (Petro Viet Nam) to build three 100,000 tonne oil tankers.

Vinashin to Invest $18.9m in Ca Mau Project

According to reports, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) recently announced it would invest $18.9m in the construction of a shipyard in the southernmost province of Ca Mau. Vinashin said it had selected a 54 hectare site in the province’s Nam Can District for the new facility, which is to be used to build ships displacing 5,000-10,000 tons, the average size of its current fleet. Up to 4,000 employees will work at the new shipyard once it is operational in 2008, and the State-owned company is already working with provincial authorities to train local workers. Vinashin said its latest project was part of its plan to increase local content in shipbuilding to 65 percent by 2010, which would require investment of about $633 m.

Vinashin Wins $4.5b Contracts in Six-Month Period

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) signed shipbuilding contracts with foreign partners, including those from Japan, Germany and Israel, worth nearly US $4.5b in the first half of the year. Cargo ships under these contracts were mostly of 5,300 to over 56,000 tons. The corporation has also built 29 new ships with capacity of 1,000 to 3,000 tonnes in this same six month period. Vinashin is working with Japanese and German firms to build cargo ships of 8,700 to 56,300 tonnes and container ships of 900 to 1,100 TEU and with PetroVietnam to build oil tankers. Vinashin to Build Three Tankers

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) on July 4 awarded a contract to the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), for the construction of three 105,000-ton oil tankers. The oil tankers, to be built at the Dung Quat Shipyard, are to be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities satisfying latest international maritime conventions. According to Vinashin, oil tankers of this kind are normally priced and sold for $60-65m each in the world market. Vinashin Eyes Future Growth

It has only been a decade since the Vietnam National Shipbuilding Corporation (Vinashin) started operations yet it has been able to accumulate sizeable capital and gain the government’s confidence in its capacity to become a force in Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry and worldwide. From an initial investment capital of more than $10min 1996, the capital increased to $9.4b with a total turnover of $2.07m in 2006. The total value of contracts signed with domestic and foreign shipowners was $5b by June 2006. Vietnam Investment Review reports that Vinashin has enough work to do from now to 2010 with a turnover from exporting ships being estimated at $2b per year.

Vinashin Lines Signs Contracts

According to reports, the Vinashin Lines Ltd Co, a subsidiary of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), signed two major shipbuilding contracts this week in Hai Phong. Under the first contract, the Ha Long Shipyard will build one 54,000-tonne ship, 190m long, 32.4m wide and 17.8m high, and with 9,480 horsepower, capable of running at 14 knots. Matching the largest ships yet built in Vietnam, the 54,000-ton vessel will be built at a cost of about $30m. ABS to Supervise Tanker Building Process at Yard

VNA reported that Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company has signed with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS.) The contract means the classification society will supervise the shipyard's building process of three oil tankers. Under the $400,000 contract, ABS, in collaboration with the Vietnam Register Agency will send its supervisors to the shipyard to supervise the quality of all stages to build the oil tankers, which will begin at the end of this month, officials from the Dung Quat shipyard. The first oil tanker with capacity of 104,000 DWT is expected to be handed over to the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation by mid 2008, helping meet the demand for the transport of materials and products for the Dung Quat Oil Refinery…
