The world’s largest wind turbine, Haliade-X, is being tested on Maasvlakte at Port of Rotterdam. This ‘test rig’ was realised via innovative cross-pollination between the American GE Renewable Energy, Sif Netherlands and Pondera Consult.Huge 107-meter-long blades have recently started rotating on Maasvlakte. These are part of the Haliade-X12 MW, the world’s most powerful wind turbine.It is 260 meters high and has a 12-megawatt capacity, sufficient to generate energy to supply electricity to some 16,000 households in the region. As comparison: the wind turbine next to Van Brienenoordbrug has a maximum 3-megawatt capacity.Sif Netherlands is building the foundations for offshore wind farms on the 62-hectare site on Pieter van Vollenhovenweg.

Generale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP), a joint venture between Dubai-based trade enabler DP World and French shipping line CMA CGM, has been awarded the service concession for the construction and operation of berths 11 and 12 at Port 2000 in Le Havre.According to a press release from the French port, the terminals of Port 2000 In Le Havre are trade-enabling gateways for cargo entering the French consumer markets. Recognizing the strategic importance of Port 2000, GMP has been an early supporter of port development and looks to grow its partnership with the Port of Le Havre by developing the terminal further."The addition of the two new berths will enable us to secure more volume and provide high-efficiency services," said Louis Jonquiere, managing director of GMP.

French cargo and cruise port Marseille Fos had a relatively stable year in 2018 with traffic of more than 81 million tonnes, up 1%.The performances included a seventh consecutive year of growth in container traffic, which rose 2% for 1.4 million teu, and a 12% increase in dry bulks at 15.2MT. Meanwhile cruise numbers leapt 15% to 1.7 million passengers.Infrastructure development and maintenance spending of €60 million featured further logistics park expansion. Alongside this, agreements were reached on major industrial implantations. The 2019 capex budget of €85m has earmarked €58m for development projects. These include ongoing work to link the two Fos container terminals via a quay extension, which is due for handover in April 2020.

The Japanese group MOL Chemical Tankers is coming to the port of Antwerp. Together with the port group SEA-Invest it is to invest some 300 to 400 million euros in construction of a tank storage terminal for liquid chemicals. This is yet more confirmation of the port's power of attraction for big investors.Mol Chemical Tankers, a member of the Japanese group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, will team up with SEA-Invest to build a tank storage terminal in the port of Antwerp. The Sea-Mol joint venture has been set up for this purpose, for which it will invest some 300 to 400 million euros. The new investment is expected to create 100 direct jobs.The tank terminal will be located on a 45 hectare site in the Delwaide dock.

Portugal’s Blue Atlantic has released new plans for an 800 meter quay to berth two Panamax vessels showcasing its maritime trade potential. The 96-hectare site for sale in one of Europe’s leading maritime industrial zones is being primed for maritime, ports and logistics investors targeting the Iberian Peninsula and mainland Europe. Blue Atlantic project lead Fernando Fernandes said it offers one of the fastest and most efficient routes in and out of Europe, bypassing the congested Mediterranean.

Welsh workboat builders and servicing specialists Mainstay Marine Solutions said it has secured funding to support the purchase of a 150/200 ton boat lift. Mainstay Marine Solutions, marine engineers located in the deep-water port at Pembroke Dock on the Milford Haven Waterway, are set to purchase an amphibian boat hoist with the assistance of Coastal Communities Fund (CFF) funding. The 150/200 ton hoist will be capable of lifting vessels out of the water and moving around their 4.6 hectare site and into the company’s’ 4,000 m2 of covered workshop space.

The Port of Ngqura is poised to play a vital role in ensuring the security of South Africa’s fuel supply, while creating a new petroleum trading hub for Southern Africa in anticipation of the relocation of existing liquid bulk facilities from Port Elizabeth. This follows the conclusion of an agreement between Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo (Pty) Ltd (OTGC)to plan, fund, construct, own, maintain and operate a new liquid bulk handling facility at the Port of Ngqura. The opening of a new break bulk terminal is one of the many developments and investments in the break bulk sector in the port of Rotterdam; a sector that has been very much on the up in recent years. The new Liebherr crane helped Pacorini establish itself, on 1 August, on a 12.5 hectare site with a 600-metre long quay in the Merwehaven. Here, the company will focus on the handling and storage of non-ferrous metals and possibly also soft commodities. Other recent developments are the construction of a 42-hectare terminal for a joint venture between SIF Group and Verbrugge International on Maasvlakte 2, which is expected to become operational in mid-2016. This terminal will focus on the production, handling and storage of foundations for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry.

With growth of 5.9% the port of Antwerp has got off to a strong start in 2015. In terms of container handling (in TEU) Antwerp even achieved growth of 9.5% in the first three months of this year. The 2M alliance of MSC and Maersk which last year opted resolutely for Antwerp is of course not unconnected with these growth figures. During the next few months preparations will be finalised for transfering the activities of the MSC shipping company – currently operating in the Delwaide dock on the right bank area of the port – to the Deurganck dock on the left bank of the Scheldt. This dock with its annual capacity of 11 million TEU will enable MSC to further develop its activities.

Ports of Auckland, Napier Port and Icepak today announced the formation of a joint-venture to develop a new inland port and intermodal freight hub at Longburn, Palmerston North and to target Growth in Manawatu-Whanganui Region. Located on the site of the old Longburn freezing works owned by Icepak, the venture will see the nine hectare site transformed into a significant intermodal logistics and manufacturing hub. Site clearance is underway and work will start soon on a cross dock to complement the existing Icepak cold store on site. A container yard and container wash facility – to prepare containers to export ready standard – will also be built. This is the first stage of a $20 million development.

PT AKR Corporindo, a distributor of basic chemicals and petroleum products, plans to spend 2.3 trillion rupiah ($198.84 million) on investment in the second half of this year, to finance its Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate project, said Director Suresh Vembu. The firm is working in co-operation with state port firm PT Pelindo on the project situated on a 1,700-hectare site in Gresik, East Java, and has secured loan commitments from local banks for the project, Vembu said. Damen Song Cam is a new yard, and is one of the largest in the group and represents Damen’s first formal Joint Venture yard in Vietnam. Damen said Song Cam is considered state-of-the-art, bringing a western shipyard designed to meet European health, safety and environmental standards into a Vietnamese environment. The yard will produce around 40 ships per year in phase one.

Britain has appointed agents to find a tenant for the country's historic Portsmouth dockyard, which is due to be vacated by BAE Systems by the end of the year as the defence contractor shuts its shipbuilding activities in the city. BAE's announcement in November last year, which will affect 940 jobs, signalled the potential end of more than 500 years of shipbuilding in Portsmouth on England's south coast. The company plans to consolidate operations at its yards in Glasgow, Scotland.

Odfjell Terminals has entered into a Letter of Intent to purchase Chem-Marine Corporation of South Carolina. Chem-Marine controls a 25.3 acre/10.2 hectare site through a long term land lease, and is located adjacent to Odfjell's tank terminal in North Charleston, South Carolina. The property is situated on the Cooper River and has a 250 meters deep-water front and a 12.5 meter draft ship berth, with one dedicated stainless steel lines connected to 12,800 cbm of storage in two carbon steel tanks.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. has bought the former Maritime Steel and Foundries Ltd. steel fabrication site in Dartmouth as part of its plans to gear up for the $25-billion dollar federal combat ship procurement contract, reports 'The Chronicle Herald'. According to documents filed with Property Online Nova Scotia, title to the 2.4-hectare site at 605 Windmill Rd. was transferred from Cameron Corporation Ltd. to Irving Shipbuilding in June. Citing Irving spokeswoman Mary Keith, 'The Chronicle Herald' reported that the company wouldn’t disclose the purchase price, which was rumoured to be about $13 million. Chevron Oronite recently confirmed that it is planning to significantly expand the capacity of its existing additives plant on Jurong Island in Singapore. Project plans include growth in component manufacturing, blending and shipping capacity and overall infrastructure to increase total supply capability for the Asia-Pacific Region. “Our Singapore plant, already the largest additives plant in the Asia Pacific region, was built to support the growing Asia Pacific market,” said Andy Tugendhat, Vice President of Sales. Chevron Oronite expects that the additional capacity realization will occur in the 2014 timeframe. The company did not disclose the amount of its investment in the project.

Oiltanking Mediaco Marseille has confirmed plans to construct $294.5m refined products depot at the Port of Marseilles Authority’s Fos oil terminal. With a first phase due on stream in 2010, the 800,00 cu m facility offers additional throughput potential of six million tons a year at Marseilles-Fos – already the world’s third biggest petroleum port – reinforcing its Mediterranean hub role in refined products trades. The partners in the new company are Oiltanking, a subsidiary of Hamburg’s Marquard & Bahls, and Marseilles-based Mediaco. Oiltanking is said to be the world’s second largest independent tank farm operator, with 73 storage terminals in 21 countries…

Keppel Nantong Shipyard Co. Ltd (Keppel Nantong), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), won three contracts worth a total of $75 million, including owner furnished equipment, to build eight tugs. The first contract is secured from Smit Internationale Beheer B.V (SMIT) to build two 90-ton bollard pull offshore support tugs. It will have anchor handling, diving support, and fire fighting capabilities. Delivery of these two vessels is expected in the first half of 2010. They will be deployed in West Africa. The second and third contracts are awarded by Keppel Smit Towage Pte Ltd and Maju Maritime Pte Ltd. Each contract is for the construction of three 65-tonne bollard pull twin-screw Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs.

Muhibbah Marine Engineering Sdn Bhd, is expected to secure five new shipbuilding contracts valued more than $27m over the next 12 months, driven by strong demand from the offshore oil and gas sector. According to Business Times- Malaysia, Muhibbah Marine expects more orders from local and international shipping firms as shipbuilding capacity has become tighter globally and there is active demand for support vessels for oil and gas exploration. Muhibbah Marine is actively participating in exhibitions in the Middle East where the market demand for OSVs, meant for servicing the oil and gas industry, is on the rise. Demand for OSVs will continue to increase worldwide at least for the next three years with an ageing world fleet and improvement in offshore oil and gas exploration and production.
