The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 445 million ($45.6 million) loan agreement with the Municipality of Ystad to expand harbor facilities so that new, larger liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels on the Swinoujscie-Ystad line can access the harbor.The port in the southern-Swedish town is a busy connection point to the Polish Port of Swinoujscie and the Danish island of Bornholm. The project aims at increasing the capacity and upgrading the Port of Ystad facilities in order to accommodate larger ro-pax vessels over 240 meters in length…

Port of Ystad, which saw record-breaking volumes in 2015, continues reaching new record numbers in 2016 for traffic to and from Poland and the Danish island of Bornholm. The number of ton goods, trucks, busses, cars and passengers all showed an increase during the first half of 2016 compared to the same period last year. The biggest reported increase was the number of trucks with an 18.6 percent increase. In total 110,000 trucks passed through the port – a new record for Port of Ystad. The number of ton goods surpassed 1,650,000, also a port record with a 13 percent increase.

Port of Ystad saw record breaking traffic numbers in 2015, retaining the port’s position as Sweden’s third largest ferry passenger port. The largest increase was in bus traffic, which increased by 30,7 % compared to 2014. “The numbers from 2015 show that the traffic in Port of Ystad continues to grow, with the exception of railway waggons where we saw a minor decrease. The conventional goods as well as goods on trucks and trailers increased, making the total number higher than last years” says Björn Boström, CEO of Port of Ystad. The number of passengers increased by 1,5%. In total, 1 987 982 passengers chose to travel via the Port of Ystad. If this trend continues the port is looking to exceed two million passengers in 2016. Car traffic increased by 4 % compared to 2014.

Adelte, a designer and manufacturer of sophisticated Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) for cruise and ferry terminals has recently won eight contracts for the supply in 2014 of a total of eleven tailor-made SPBBs to the ports of Rotterdam, Stornoway, Swinoujscie and Ullapool in Northern Europe, Denia and Savona in Southern Europe and Busan and Singapore in Asia. Adelte has been awarded a contract by the Rotterdam Port Authority to install this summer a new KRONUS SPBB, which will replace the current system.

The new High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC), recently installed in the Port of Ystad, Sweden, has rendered a significant interest in shipping circles over the last couple of months. Recently, over 70 participants from all Nordic countries and the Baltic States gathered for a special seminar featuring technical discussions and live inspection of the newly opened double frequency HVSC. Cavotec co-hosted a community & business outreach event at the Port of Ystad, including a seminar on benefits of Alernative Marine Power (AMP). The event was co-hosted by Cavotec, leading power and automation conglomerate ABB, the Port of Ystad, electrical systems specialist Processkontroll Elektriska, technical consultancy Grontmij, as well as Polferries and Unity Line. Cavotec AMP systems enable ships to close down their engines while docked and to connect to shore side electricity.

ABB shore-to-ship power connection installed in Port of Ystad enables vesels to shut down their diesel generators to reduce pollution and noise. Shore to ship power connection is sometimes known as AMP, Alternative Maritime Power. Located on the southern tip of Sweden on the Baltic coast, Ystad is Sweden’s fifth largest port, handling some 3,500 sailings annually, including daily ferry services to Poland and Denmark, as well as cruise ships in the summer and cargo vessels all year round.

Cavotec claim this to be the largest high-voltage shore connection system in the world. Concern over air quality in harbours has led to growing pressure on port operators to reduce carbon and nitrogen dioxide emissions. Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) is a cold ironing system which allows ships to turn off their engines when in port, and plug into shore-side electricity supply, thus helping to bring cleaner air to ports and surrounding communities.

The Volvo Group has taken a step to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers entering Sweden by providing breathalyzer equipment for truck and bus drivers at ferries serving Sweden. This initiative has been welcomed by the authorities. Over the past few years, there have been several serious accidents involving foreign vehicles driven by drivers who have been intoxicated. Statistics from the police in southern Sweden also indicate a sharp rise in the number of intoxicated drivers. As of March this year, the number of drivers arrested in the port of Ystad for driving under the influence of alcohol has more than doubled compared with the previous year.
