The Ship Inspection Report (SIRE) programme developed by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) intended that tanker inspection reports should be shared by all OCIMF members. They are not. The cost of inspections should be shared by both parties. They are not. And to make matters worse, ship operators often have to pay the costs of luxury travel for inspectors. Dangers of Chemical Cargo Misdescription

The London P&I Club reported that one of its members recently suffered an onboard fire as a result of the wilful misdescription by shippers of a chemical cargo. London P&I warns that there is a danger of further such incidents occurring, given the nature of modern transport logistics. The cargo involved was calcium hypochlorite, a chemical in widespread use throughout the world, most commonly in the treatment and purification of water, and which has some inherent properties which can make it extremely dangerous. For example, if it becomes too hot, or contaminated with impurities, a reaction may set in, leading to fire or explosion. Several such incidents occurred in the late 1990s, some involving explosions in onboard containers which resulted in extensive damage to large oceangoing ships.

Vopak, the world leader in tank storage, said net profits after payouts of preferential share dividends rose to 160.1 million euros ($148.9 million) in 2000 from 152.2 million euros in the previous year. Vopak said profits after goodwill write-offs were likely to rise by eight to 10 percent in 2001, and also forecast a rise in net profit before goodwill and one-time charges of 19-21 percent in the current year. Company watchers said although the 2000 figures came as no surprise, the outlook for 2001 was slightly disappointing.

Vopak Says No Go On Tank Storage Sale

Dutch-based chemical distribution and storage company Vopak NV said on Monday it was not considering selling its tank storage activities despite interest from another company. Vopak's statement followed a report that the company had received a 1.1 billion euro bid for its tank storage activities from a foreign company. But Vopak said hiving off the tank storage activities, which contributed about two-thirds of the company's cash flow, was not consistent with its strategy. "Capitalizing on the prevailing cohesion between logistics and chemical distribution continues to be the cornerstone of our strategy, particularly since the oil and chemical industry is increasingly striving for consolidation of its logistics and distribution activities," company officials said.
