U.K. Government Pressured To Award Locally

Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers last Thursday promised the government would give "fullest consideration" to Govan shipyard's bid for a defense contract for roll-on roll-off ferries. The government is in a precarious position with the contracts, stuck between selecting a shipbuilder in accordance with EU directives regarding fair competition and subsidies, balanced against the expected political pull to place the contract with a national yard. As the Scottish shipyard's future hangs in the balance, Byers said no decision had been made on the Ministry of Defense (MoD) contract but added the government was conscious of the importance of the order. "No decisions have been taken over the award of future MoD orders which could affect this yard.

BAE was named as prime contractor to construct two of the first batch of a dozen state-of-the-art Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyers. Vosper will build the third warship at its shipyards in Portsmouth. Both companies will be involved in the design, and construction is expected to start in 2002. The Ministry of Defence is expected to order a total of 12 Type 45 destroyers, due to come into service between 2007 and 2014. The MoD said the rest of the orders should be placed in 2004.

British Builders Battle For Contracts

BAE Systems Plc is engaged in a bitter fight with naval shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft to secure the contract to build all 12 of the Royal Navy's new Type 45 destroyers, the Financial Times reported. The BAE is said to have offered to leave the field clear for Vosper in warships less that 85 m long, but the Hampshire shipbuilder has secured the backing of a group of MPs in the interest of preserving competition in U.K. warship building. Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said last July that two of the first three destroyers would be built by BAE and one by Vosper, but is now considering BAE's bid to take on all 12. Vosper made 650 staff redundant in December after the contract for the design and construction of the Type 45 destroyer was delayed. - (Reuters)

VT Group to Update Progress of Joint Venture

VT plans to combine its shipbuilding business with that of BAE Systems PLC in line with UK government plans to make the industry more efficient and to prevent peaks and troughs in demand, AFX News reported. Delays by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in giving the O.K. for work on a 3.5-3.9 bln stg contract to build two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy, which would form the bulk of the JV's future work, have put back an announcement. The MoD had been due to approve the start of manufacturing before the May local elections, but there is now speculation that it will not make an announcement until the new Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party is decided at the end of next month.

EU Clears Thales, DCN Shipbuilding Combo

France's two main warship makers, DCN and Thales SA, won EU approval to combine their shipbuilding businesses, boosting the prospect of wider consolidation in Europe's fragmented naval sector. The French government has backed the deal, in which state-owned naval shipyard DCN is buying Thales' shipbuilding activities in France _ excluding its parts-making business. Thales has taken a 25 percent stake in DCN, with the option of raising the stake to 35 percent over the next two years. The European Commission said its investigation showed the deal would not cause antitrust problems because the two already cooperate closely and a number of effective rivals would remain standing.

EU Clears Thales, DCN Shipbuilding Combo

France's two main warship makers, DCN and Thales SA, won EU approval Tuesday to combine their shipbuilding businesses, boosting the prospect of wider consolidation in Europe's fragmented naval sector. The European Commission said its investigation showed the deal would not cause antitrust problems because the two already cooperate closely and a number of effective rivals would remain standing. Thales had already sold most of its naval equipment business to DCN before the deal, it said, meaning that any new changes would be limited and there was little chance of the combined company choking supply to rivals. DCN will acquire Thales' naval assets…
