VT Halter Mourns Death of CEO

VT Halter Marine announced the loss of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Brigadier General Boyd E. King, (Ret.) who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, 20 April 2009 at the company’s Corporate Headquarters in . The cause of death reportedly was a heart attack. BG (Ret) Boyd King joined VT Halter Marine on December 16, 2002, as CEO. Before his appointment at VTHM, Mr. King was a retired Brigadier General with a 35-year career in the United States Army, culminating in his appointment as Director of Transportation, Energy and Troop Support on the Arm Staff.

Feature: Getting on an Even Keel

Without much fanfare, VT Halter Marine, Gulfport, Miss. is completing a number of very large and capable vessels for both commercial and U. S. Government interests. The company seems on track with the objectives set last year by CEO Boyd E. "Butch" King to add additional projects to their two shipyards located in the Pascagoula, Miss. area. For example, the company will christen the Oscar Dyson October 17. This is a very unique Fisheries Survey Vessel for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a Federal Government agency. The vessel is 208 ft. long with a 49-ft. beam and a relatively deep 28-ft. hull that has a maximum draft of 19 ft.. The Oscar Dyson has a steel, ice-classed hull with an aluminum deckhouse and is anticipated to run at 14 knots.

VT Halter Marine to Conduct MarAd Study

VT Halter Marine Inc. will partner with the U.S. Department of Transportation – Maritime Administration to conduct a feasibility study for the design and manufacture of a dual-use vessel. A dual-use vessel is one that has both commercial and military applications. The four-part study has an estimated cost of $1,224,680, which VTHM will share on a 50/50 basis with the government. It will take approximately 26 weeks to complete the project. VTHM will evaluate known hull forms to help determine the feasibility of a dual-use vessel based on a fast Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) ferry design.

News: VT Halter Delivers First-of-Series OSV for Seacor

VT Halter Marine Inc. delivered its first vessel in 2004, the Seacor Pride. The 220- x 46- by 17-ft. Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) is classed DPS-1 and can carry 5,100 barrels of liquid mud, 6,740 cu. ft. of dry bulk along with fuel oil and fresh water. Constructed at VT Halter Marine's HMP (Halter Moss Point) Operations, Seacor Pride is a high capacity supply vessel with a pair of Caterpillar 3516 main engines and a Caterpillar 3508 driving a 1,000 hp bowthruster. Two additional Caterpillar engines drive liquid mud pumps on one end and the compressor that powers the bulk mud system on the other end. Offshore Supply Vessels carry goods, supplies, individuals (in addition to the crew) or equipment used to support exploration and offshore production of mineral or energy sources.

Offshore Profile: VT Halter: King has Company Back on Track

It was little more than a year ago that Boyd E. (Butch) King, CEO, took the reigns at VT Halter Marine, a designer and builder of small to medium-sized ships with a varied and rich history. After 15 months on the job, Maritime Reporter caught up with Mr. King to discuss the company's present initiatives and future prospects. Q: Can you share some insights to your management philosophy? A: My 35-year career with the U.S. Army started as an enlisted man and I worked my way through the ranks to Brigadier General. It has given me a unique understanding and a deep respect for the men and women that work at VT Halter Marine. I am very proud to be a part of the VT Halter Marine Team. I am a firm believer in accountability.

VT Halter Launches PCTC

VT Halter Marine recently launched MV Jean Anne, the first Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) to be built in the U.S. Built by VT Halter Marine at its Pascagoula, Miss., facility, Jean Anne is one of the largest vessels to be launched by a U.S. mid-tier shipyard. "Today marks the successful launching of the first modern PCTC to be built in the U.S. for the Jones Act trade,” said George W. Pasha, IV, President, Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines. The ship is owned and operated by Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines, a joint venture between The Pasha Group, a Corte Madera, Calif.-based leading global transportation and logistics provider, and Strong Vessel Operators LLC, a Stamford, Conn.-based ship owner and operator. Measuring 579 ft. overall, with a beam of 102 ft.

SCA Elects New Chairman

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) announced that Steve Welch, chief executive officer of Todd Pacific Shipyards Corp., has been elected its new chairman, replacing Donald T. “Boysie” Bollinger, chief executive officer of Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. Butch King, chief executive officer of VT Halter Marine, Inc., was elected to the position of vice-chair. The elections took place during the Council’s annual Spring Meeting, held April 30 through May 1, in Washington, DC.

VT Halter Marine Lays Keel for LSV

At a keel-laying ceremony on March 13, VT Halter Marine Inc., began the construction of the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armament Command’s (TACOM) newest Logistic Support Vessel. “We value the confidence and trust that the U.S. company and our employees,” said Butch King, CEO of VT Halter Marine. “Our employees have first-hand experience in designing and building Logistic Support Vessels, Large Tugs and LCU-2000 Class Landing Craft that are specifically tailored to operational requirements. The U.S. Army is a long-term marine customer and about 50 vessels in their fleet have been built at our shipyards. The 313-ft. beam of 60-feet and a molded depth of 19-feet. VT Halter Marine Wins Ferry Contract

VT Halter Marine Inc., a subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems Inc., announced today that it was selected by the Puerto Rico Port Authority (PRPA) to design and build a $2.8 million sea-going passenger ferry. The 95-ft., all-aluminum vessel, with a 24-ft. beam, and five foot, six-inch draft will be U.S. Coast Guard classed sub-chapter “K” and U.S. flagged. The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration will provide financial aid to the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority. Construction will take place at VT Halter Marine’s Pascagoula Operation located in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Delivery of the ferry is expected to be in the second quarter of 2004. The inter-island transportation ferry will operate and service the Fajardo-Vieques-Culebra Ferry Line.

VT Halter Marine To Construct Carrier For Pasha Hawaii

VT Halter Marine Inc., has signed a contract with Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines, valued at approximately $47 million, to complete the construction of their car carrier, Jean Anne. VT Halter Marine expects to complete and deliver the vessel in the fourth quarter of 2004. The vessel is the first Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) to be built in the United States. Constructed for the Jones Act trade, it will operate between U.S. Hawaii. Measuring 579 ft. overall, with a beam of 102 ft. Ft., the 13,000 deadweight ton PCTC has the capacity to transport more than 4,000 automobiles. Propulsion will be provided by a single propeller driven by a slow-speed diesel engine.
