Robert Allan Ltd. Designs for the American Market

Being based just across the open border between Canada and America since 1930, Robert Allan Ltd. has developed a deep understanding of the American market and just how our ship designs can be tailored to suit our neighbors’ requirements. America is unique in many ways. The current designs of American towing vessels are largely the result of domestically focused requirements not encountered elsewhere. As a result, Robert Allan Ltd. has had to learn to treat America as unique and not to assume means and methods used elsewhere will suit the U.S. market. A simple example is the use of the U.S.

Capt. Harry Delivered to Wilmington Tug

On December 19, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc., of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Capt. Harry, a 4200 hp Z Drive tug to Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Del. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., this ASD 25/55 Class Tug measure 80 x 32 ft. It will be used primarily for ship docking; however, and extended keel will allow for operation as an escort tug in the indirect mode. Wilmington Tug operates five tugs, and in 1977 became the first operator in North America to operate a Z Drive Tug. Wilmington Tug’s newest vessel is the ninth Z Drive Tug built by Washburn & Doughty since the Fort Bragg was constructed for Cape Fear Towing in 1998. Two Detroit Diesel model 12V4000 main engines rated at 2100 hp at 1800 RPM power the vessel.

From Small Commercial Shipyard to Premier

Local and state dignitaries convened on the Monmouth County waterfront to take part in the christening of the Gladding-Hearn built M/V Seastreak New Jersey, a 141-ft. (42.9-m), 400 passenger high speed catamaran which will provide daily commuter service from Atlantic Highlands, and Highlands, N.J., to Pier 11 (Wall Street) and East 34th Street in Manhattan. W&D Signs Contract with Wilmington Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine signed a contract to build a 4,200 hp Z-Drive Tug for Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Delaware. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., this ASD 25/55 Class Tug will measure 80 x32-ft. and admeasure less than 200 gt. It will be used primarily for ship docking; however, an extended keel will allow for operation as an escort tug in the indirect mode. Celebrating 75 Years of Ship Design

In 2005, Robert Allan Ltd will celebrate its 75th year of continuous business as a firm of Consulting Naval Architects. From its base in Vancouver, the company serves the international marine community with a wide range of specialized workboat designs, as it has done since its inception, through three generations of family ownership. The company has experienced considerable growth in the past decade, and currently has more than 30 vessels to its designs under construction around the world, including a myriad of high-performance tugboats of all types, fireboats, crewboats, patrol craft, ferries, and barges. The following are some highlights of current Robert Allan Ltd. projects that will be delivered in the early months of 2005.
