Wärtsilä New Services for Ship Lay-Ups

Wärtsilä introduces a new, comprehensive package of services, designed to cost efficiently manage hot and cold vessel lay-ups. Reduced transportation demand, over-capacity, and low freight and charter rates have become a major concern throughout the marine industry. The laying-up of ships is one option available to ship owners for meeting these challenges. However, when laying-up, it is of the utmost importance that the vessel's machinery be kept in good condition. This is achieved through professional management of the de-activation and re-activation phases, and by regular inspections and maintenance during the interim period. Wärtsilä Acquires Company

Wärtsilä has acquired the Norwegian company Maritime Service AS, which specializes in ship service, mechanical and reconditioning services. Maritime Service has its operations in Ålesund, in More region on the west coast of Norway. Maritime Service is well-positioned within fishery segment and has promising business potential in the ferry and off-shore vessel businesses. The purchase of Maritime Service will strengthen Wärtsilä's position and expand Wärtsilä's service offering in More region in Western Norway. The annual net sales of Maritime Service were 26 million NOK (EUR 3.2 million) in 2007. The company employs 28 people, of which 25 are service workers. Maritime Service's businesses will be integrated into Wärtsilä Services business in Norway.

Wärtsilä and Volvo Penta to Collaborate

Wärtsilä will start servicing and selling large Volvo Penta engines for commercial shipping applications, initially in selected markets and later globally. Volvo Penta has broadened its engine range to cover commercial vessels and the company now offers engines for increasingly large vessels for both main engine and auxiliary engine duties. The largest engines have outputs of 2,000 horsepower (1,470 kW). Wärtsilä marine engines are considerably larger than these, the largest having outputs of 108,920 horsepower (80,080 kW) . Wärtsilä is the world's leading supplier of ship power and propulsion systems. The respective product ranges of the two companies complement each other very well.

Wärtsilä Inaugurates New Facility

Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy Opens a New Training Center

Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy (WLSA) today opened a new training center in Turku, Finland. This is one step for WLSA in its development program of opening three Academies for global coverage of training and competence management services to the personnel of ship owners and power plant owners. A new training centre was opened at Subic Bay in the Philippines in November 2005 and the third is located in Fort Lauderdale, USA. The Academies will form the spine in the global network of other locations at which WLSA also provides training services. The new WLSA training centre was opened by Tage Blomberg, Group Vice President and Head of the Wärtsilä Service business. The new training centre in Turku will hold nearly 200 courses during 2006 with some 2000 participants from around the world.

Wärtsilä Boosts Service with Gerhardt Acquisition

Wärtsilä signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Gerhardt Holding Co., Inc. The company specializes in the servicing of control and automation equipment for gas and diesel engines and steam turbines. The operations to be acquired have annual net sales totaling approximately $28.6 million and 128 employees. The purchase price is $10 million. Acquisition is part of Wärtsilä's growth strategy in Service. The family-owned company is headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Gerhardt Holding Co. Inc. offers control and automation equipment service for both marine and land-based installations. The company is strongly positioned regionally in the Gulf of Mexico and on the east and west coasts of the U.S.

Wärtsilä Acquires JMC Marine

Wärtsilä has signed a letter of intent to acquire a Danish propulsion system service company JMC Marine A/S. The company, which employs 28 people, specializes on propulsion system maintenance based on laser measuring technology and has a $3.5 Million turnover. "This acquisition will further strengthen Wärtsilä's total service offerings. Our aim is to provide as broad a spectrum as possible of tailored solutions and expertise know-how covering every aspect of operation and maintenance. The know-how developed by JMC Marine speeds up and improves customer service", says Tage Blomberg, Group vice president and Head of the Service division. The acquired business will be named Ciserv Denmark and it will concentrate on service for propulsion systems and engine repair.
