Welin Lambie to Supply Davits for US Navy's Ford Class Carriers

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD), a portfolio company of Arcline Investment Management (Arcline), has been awarded a purchase order by Newport News Shipbuilding to supply four davits through Welin Lambie for the Ford Class aircraft carriers CVN 80 and CVN 81 (two davits per vessel). The award follows the supply of davits for CVN 78, which just entered service, and CVN 79, which is currently under construction. “This contract reinforces FMD’s position as a critical supplier to its core naval defense customers,” said Jay McFadyen, FMD’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Bleutec's 'Binary Marine Installation Solution' Earns AIP from ABS

Hunt Valve Wins Spare Parts Deal for Ford Class Aircraft Carriers

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD), a portfolio company of Arcline Investment Management, said it has been awarded a contract by Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) to provide essential parts through Hunt Valve for the Ford Class aircraft carriers CVN 78 – CVN 81.Hunt Valve, acquired by Fairbanks Morse Defense in 2021, manufactures valves and electromechanical actuators for naval defense applications. The contract, valued at approximately $2 million, covers parts that will be delivered during the second and third quarters of 2022.

Methanol-fueled Pilot Boat Launched in Sweden

Massachusetts Takes Delivery of New Fast Ferry

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has taken delivery of Champion, the first of two new 150-passenger, high-speed catamarans built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. The new vessels – funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) – will operate year-round commuter service in Boston Harbor, in addition to two high-speed ferries built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard in 1997. Designed by Incat Crowther, the all-aluminum ferry is 90 feet LOA, 28.8 feet abeam, and draws approximately four feet loaded.

LNG: New Milestone for MAN Rollo

MAN Rollo will provide the crane vessel Werkendam with three LNG generator sets. International marine and offshore contractor Van Oord is currently building the ship at Neptune Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. It is the first LNG powered vessel for both the yard and Van Oord. Engine supplier MAN Rollo is a pioneer when it comes to sustainable propulsion. Karel Schuurman, Sales Manager Marine Engines at MAN Rollo says, "We want to make a difference in the market for environmentally friendly applications. Our knowledge and experience in gas engines will certainly contribute to the acceptance of LNG in the maritime industry. Van Oord chose our LNG generator sets for the hybrid propulsion of the Werkendam. That is an acknowledgment of our leading role in this area.

First Damen Tug for Peru

Launching the business relationship between the two companies, Ian Taylor Peru has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group for an ASD Tug 2810. The vessel’s MTU engine and rapid delivery time were both key aspects of the contract. The two companies are also concluding negotiations for an additional order of a second identical vessel. Ian Taylor Peru, the Peruvian subsidiary of the Chilean group of companies Empresas Taylor, has been active in Peru’s towing sector since 1991. The company currently has four tugs in operation there. Looking to expand the fleet within a short timescale, the company turned to Damen: “We wanted the vessel this year and fortunately Damen had one which could be ready in June,” says Empresas Taylor Chief Legal Officer Jack Howard.

New Pilot Boat Delivered to Sabine Pilots

Sabine Pilots in Port Arthur, Texas has received a new all-aluminum pilot boat, Port Arthur. With a deep-V hull designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the Chesapeake class pilot boat was built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation of Somerset, Mass. The vessel measures 53.6 feet overall, with a 17.8-foot beam and a 4.8-foot draft. The launch is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18s diesels, each rated at 715 Bhp at 2,100 rpm. Loaded top speed is 28 knots. The engines turn five-blade NiBrAl propellers via Twin Disc MGX-5135A Quick Shift gear boxes.

HongHua Group Signs Agreement for GE Waukesha Gas Engines

With China seeking to boost its production of unconventional gas supplies to meet Asia's growing energy needs, GE Power & Water's Distributed Power business (NYSE: GE) and China's leading drill rig manufacturer HongHua Group (HK 196) today signed a three-year agreement for GE to supply its Waukesha VHP gas engines that will power drill rigs used in new shale gas projects in China. The announcement was made at the Offshore Technology Conference being held in Houston. In recent years, GE's gas engine factory in Waukesha, Wisconsin, has seen orders steadily increase as more countries seek to develop their domestic natural gas resources to increase their local energy independence.

ABS approval for MTU Series 8000 Marine Engines

Leading engine supplier for U.S. Coast Guard awarded Stringent certification by American Bureau of Shipping. The MTU Series 8000 was recently awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The new ABS NVR certification, a requirement for the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programs, was awarded to Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH after 1,500 hours of testing of the 20V 8000 that included extensive run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers Third Launch to Md Pilots

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered a new pilot boat, the third launch for the Maryland pilots, built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard. Designed by C. Raymond Hunt & Associates, the new Chesapeake Class, all-aluminum pilot boat measures 52.5 ft overall, with a 16.6-ft beam and 4.7-ft draft, and has a top speed of 25 knots. The deep-V hull is powered by twin Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines, each delivering 600 Bhp at 2100 rpm, with Twin Disc MG5114A gear boxes. The engines turn 5-blade Brutons, NiBrAl propellers through three-inch shafts.

MTU Series 4000 Engines Power New SAAM Tugs

The newest two tug boats of the Chilean work boat operator SAAM will be powered by two MTU 16V 4000 M61 engines each vessel. The ASD tugs, both 98.4 ft of total length, have been designed and built by the Detroit Chile Shipyard in Puerto Montt in Chile. The Caranca and Chucao named boats reach a maximum bollard pull of 65 tons, are equipped with HRP rudder propellers and will operate in harbour and offshore services among the coast line of Chile. SAAM as one of the biggest tug boat service suppliers in South America is operating more than 125 vessels all over the continent.

Wärtsilä will start servicing and selling large Volvo Penta engines for commercial shipping applications, initially in selected markets and later globally. Volvo Penta has broadened its engine range to cover commercial vessels and the company now offers engines for increasingly large vessels for both main engine and auxiliary engine duties. Volvo Penta Will Complete Engine Deliveries For Tugs

Volvo Penta has signed an order for engines for the Ukraine. As a result of its extended product program, Volvo Penta has been chosen as the complete engine supplier for a new series of tugs in the Ukraine. In all, this will involve deliveries of 15 diesel engines for three sister vessels which will be built in 2002. Volvo Penta’s order is worth about $3.29 million from the Ukraine for the engines for a total of three multi-purpose tugs. Two 65-liter propulsion engines for each tug; two seven-liter engines for powering gen sets on board each boat; one six-liter engine for operating the fire pumps on board each tug; making a total of 15 engines, six of which are the largest in Volvo Penta’s large marine diesel program and nine of which are six- to seven-litre engines.

To answer the question, in a word, posed on the cover: No! While the cruise market has undoubtedly experienced several painful, and often costly, growing pains of late, it is abundantly clear that the dynamics of the market have changed from when the “boom” began in the early to mid 1990s. While a record amount of tonnage has and continues to enter the workforce and operators are having a difficult time filling them, the cruise industry is truly in its toddler stage, with plenty of growth opportunities domestically and particularly abroad. Granted, industry watchers and/or investors are aghast at the low valuations of cruise companies, as well as the general financial direction, given Carnival’s and Royal Caribbean’s profit warnings of last month.
