Eastern Delivers Two Towboats to Florida Marine Transporters

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. delivered the M/V CAPT. RICKY TORRES (Hull 194) on October 11, 2016, and the M/V CULLEN PASENTINE (Hull 195) on December 28, 2016; the 64th and the 65th 90’ Inland Towboat to Florida Marine Transporters, LLC of Mandeville, LA., continuing FMT’s ongoing new build program. It was in early 2015, when Florida Marine Transporters, LLC signed an additional towboat, bringing the total to sixty-five (65) vessels contracted over the last 10 years. Five of the most recent 90’ inland towboat deliveries to Florida Marine occurred over the past twelve months. The M/V CAPT. RICKY TORRES and the M/V CULLEN PASENTINE were constructed at Eastern’s Allanton Facility from a design furnished by Gilbert Associates, Inc. of Boston, MA.

Engine Providers Power Operators' Profits

Wärtsilä Donates Engine to Texas A&M University

Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy. In addition to the equipment, Wärtsilä will also offer engine training to the Texas A&M Galveston engineering professors through the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. delivered the M/V Lawrence Campbell (Hull 193) on April 12, 2016, the 63rd 90-foot inland towboat to Florida Marine Transporters, LLC of Mandeville, La., continuing its ongoing newbuild program. It was in early 2015, when Florida Marine Transporters, LLC signed an additional towboat, bringing the total to 65 vessels contracted over the last 10 years. ABB to Power Futuristic Hybrid Ferry

ABB will provide the technology integral to one of the most innovative ship designs ever seen on the Norwegian fjords. The ferry will couple its striking appearance with ABB’s cutting edge maritime hybrid solution. The vessel’s concept has been named Seasight by the shipbuilder Brødrene Aa. ABB will supply a compact and lightweight version of the award winning Onboard DC Grid system that will manage and control the energy flow between the diesel engine, propeller and charging station. The Onboard DC Grid is a key enabler in efficiently integrating energy storage into modern marine power systems through its DC infrastructure and integrated power and energy management system.

Merriman Enters New Role at Fairbanks Morse

Fairbanks Morse Engine, an EnPro Industries company, has named Rhett Merriman sales manager for marine power systems. Merriman, a veteran Fairbanks Morse manager, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. Throughout his 36-year career he has been involved with bringing large, complex power system projects from the proposal, bidding and contract development phase through project management to successful completion. Most recently he was manager of application engineering and earlier, he served as manager of government engine sales.

Second generation of Caterpillar’s gpLink will do more and serve a wider market. It is no secret that Remote Tracking, Monitoring, and Notification Systems for just about anything that floats, is here. In on the ground floor of all of that, more than 18 months ago, was the organization that provides premier power solutions in the medium- and high-speed segments with outputs from 93 to 16,000 kW in main propulsion and 10 to 7,680 kWe in marine generator sets. gplink, the satellite/cellular based tracking, monitoring, and notification system was specifically designed just for Cat engines. Caterpillar Marine Systems Doubles Parts Warranty

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems says it has increased the warranty on Cat Brand Parts used in all marine applications from six months to one year. The warranty covers all parts used in Cat marine engines, Cat marine generator sets, Cat branded marine control systems and Cat marine transmissions. The extended coverage applies to all parts sold or utilized in service work on or after June 1, 2012. The suppliers say that there will be no additional cost to customers for this significant extension of warranty protection.

L-3 SAM Supplies Wind Farm Electronics

L-3 SAM Electronics announced that it has been commissioned by steel contractor Bladt Industries A/S of Aalborg, Denmark, to outfit transition pieces for the EnBW Baltic 2 wind farm due to become operational this year. “The EnBW Baltic 2 project is the second major turnkey wind farm contract to have recently been awarded to L-3 and further underscores the effectiveness of our Marine & Power Systems (M&PS) wind energy working group in leveraging its broad capabilities to meet customer needs,” said Juergen Meyer-Pepel, senior vice president of L-3 SAM Electronics.

L-3 SAM to Supply Electrical Package for DanTysk Wind Project

L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that together with its associated L-3 companies, it has been awarded a major contract for the supply and installation of the electrical system package on an accommodation platform being built in Kiel, Germany, by Nobiskrug of Rendsburg as part of the DanTysk offshore wind farm project jointly developed by Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Vattenfall. The accommodation platform for the new wind farm is designed to permanently support O&M personnel for DanTysk with fully equipped individual living quarters that will include general communal and leisure areas…

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announced the EPA Tier 2 Certification of all MaK engine platforms with cylinder volumes of above thirty liters. Included in the certification are the M 32 C, M 43 C, M 46 DF as well as the recently announced M 34 DF engine platform. The certification of the MaK range provides customers operating in the American market, specifically in the commercial and offshore marine markets, a spectrum of power nodes to meet emissions regulations on U.S. flagged vessels.

Caterpillar, Peterson Repower Harley Tugboats

Replacing the prime engine in a seafaring vessel to meet modern emissions laws can be a major challenge. For many vessel owners, the option to retrofit existing engines is an attractive alternative to implement compliant power solutions into their operations. Recognizing the need to provide flexible, comprehensive solutions to help customers address the increasingly complex emissions regulations, Caterpillar unveiled the EPA certified Cat  3500 marine emissions kits. Bay Area tug and barge operator Harley Marine Services was eager to incorporate sustainable, efficient power solutions into their vessels and reached out to Cat Dealer Peterson to evaluate viable options for several vessels in their fleet.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is relaunching one of the most successful marine engine platforms in its history at the current 2013 International Workboat Show. The Cat® 3406C marine propulsion engine will enter production in late 2013, providing customers in lesser regulated countries, including Latin America and Asia, with an economical, dependable solution for their commercial marine vessels. The mechanically governed 3406C propulsion engine will be available in ratings of 272 bkW @ 1800 rpm and 298 bkW @ 1800 rpm.

The new Cat 3406 bundled repair solution, which builds off of the Cat 3412 bundled repair solution launched earlier this year, is a customizable, comprehensive solution for customers looking to keep their vessels on the water longer.

Caterpillar to Launch Two EPS Tier 4 Marine Engines

The first engine platforms to be rolled out as Tier 4 solutions are two legendary performers in the commercial marine industry: the Cat 3516C marine engine as well as the Cat 280 marine engine. The C280 engine will be available as Tier 4 certified in both the 8 and 12 cylinder configurations. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine as well as the Cat C280-8 Tier 4 certified engine and Cat C280-12 Tier 4 certified engine are now all available for customers to order through the global Cat dealer network. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine will be available in ratings of 2,240 bkW and 2350 bkW at 1,800 rpm. An auxiliary or diesel electric propulsion solution is available in a 2,250 ekW (2368 bkW) rating.

Caterpillar Develops Second Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 34 DF, a new marine dual fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry. The M 34 DF dual fuel engine boasts a power rating of 500 kW per cylinder at 720 and 750 rpm in diesel and gas modes, and will share the same footprint as the highly successful M 32 C engine series. The M 34 DF will be capable of running on natural gas as an alternative to marine diesel oil or large and complex scrubber installations for Emission Control Areas (ECA) operation as of 2015. First engine deliveries are foreseen for October 2014.

Caterpillar Unveils the M 32 E, Increased Power Rating

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 32 E, a new high performance marine diesel engine platform for the commercial marine industry based on the M 32 C engine series. The M 32 E engine boasts an increased power rating of 550 kW per cylinder @ 720 and 750 rpm and with total output ranging from 3,300 kW for the six cylinder configuration to 4,950 kW for the nine cylinder configuration. First engine deliveries are foreseen for fall 2014. Offering both 720 and 750 rpm and the higher power output ideal for the offshore market in diesel electric and auxiliary applications with multi-engine concepts, the M 32 E is the first MaK “5 Mega Watt” power solution in the 320 mm bore segment.

Developed for all engine platforms with electrical specialists Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), the system package utilizes AKA’s XeroPoint Hybrid marine propulsion system and provides fuel savings of up to 25% and even emissions reductions. A recent CARB study found a 73% reduction in PM, 50% reduction in NOx & 26% reduction in CO2. Significant improvements are also seen in performance, control and noise levels.
