COVID-19 Weighs on Great Lakes-Seaway Shipping

While St. Lawrence Seaway cargo volumes decreased during the past two months due to economic shifts related to COVID-19, industry leaders said the binational trade and transportation corridor is ready to play its part in the economic recovery efforts in the coming months. Meanwhile, with an increased focus on commodity diversification through project cargo, international shipments of wind energy components in the Great Lakes region are taking off.Overall St. Lawrence Seaway tonnage from March 15 through May 31 totaled 7.7 million metric tons, down 10% compared to the same time period in 2019.

BigLift, Chung Yang Join for LNG Heavy Transport

BigLift Shipping and Chung Yang Shipping from South Korea have reached an agreement for cooperation in heavy transport shipping in LNG, oil and gas markets.A joint press release said that their four heavy transport vessels (HTVs) will be commercially operated by BigLift Shipping.With this combination of two pairs of sisterships – BigLift Barentsz and BigLift Baffin and CY Interocean I and CY Interocean II – the companies are ready to meet the future demands in the LNG, Oil and Gas markets and the renewable market and will adhere to the highest QHSE standards.The vessels are almost similar with respect to deck space, however, the CY vessels’ depth is less, enabling BigLift and Chung Yang to handle an even wider range of port locations in respect of water depth and quay heights.

Spliethoff Group Prepares for 2020 Sulphur Cap

MC-Class Vessels Incorporated in BigLift Fleet

This week, BigLift Shipping’s BigLift Baffin arrived in Singapore to deliver a crane boom and luffing frame for Heerema Marine Contractor’s new flag ship Sleipnir from the Huisman wharf in Xiamen, China. This is the first project for the vessel after her transformation into the BigLift colours. Sister vessel BigLift Barentsz’ first voyage in the BigLift livery will start next month with a shipment of container cranes for a Japanese client. It is well-known that at the end of 2017 BigLift Shipping ended the cooperation with RollDock for the management of the MC-Class vessels. Since January 1, the two BigLift-owned MC Class vessels are part of the BigLift fleet and are now sailing under the names BigLift Barentsz and BigLift Baffin.

Terragon Trash Tech for BigLift Ship

Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc. and Marship Engineering entered into a contract with Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding China to supply a MAGS V8 for the new build vessel mv Happy Sun of Netherlands based BigLift Shipping (a member of the Spliethoff Group). As shipping companies are increasingly under a microscope regarding their emissions to the environment, the decision by BigLift Shipping to chose MAGS gasification technology reflects its role as an early adopter of innovative technologies on their ships.

New Crane Orders for Huisman

•    1 x 5,000mt Tub Mounted Crane for Allseas. The cranes will be built at the Huisman production facilities in The Netherlands, Czech Republic and China. Deliveries are scheduled for end 2017, 2018 and 2019. The two 900mt Heavy Lift Mast Cranes for BigLift Shipping are envisaged for Biglift’s third Happy S-type vessel ‘Happy Sun’. The new built vessel is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2018. The 1,600mt Leg Encircling Crane for Van Oord will replace the existing 900mt crane onboard their offshore installation jack-up ‘Aeolus’. The new crane will enable Van Oord to install bigger and heavier foundations and turbines for offshore wind farms. The crane will be delivered and installed in the first quarter of 2018.

BigLift Shipping Expands Heavy Lift Fleet

BigLift Shipping said it has ordered a third Happy S-type vessel. The new build vessel, to be named Happy Sun, will be identical to BigLift’s Happy Star and will be built by Ouhua Shipbuilding in Zhoushan, China. The new vessel is expected for delivery in the first quarter of 2018. Happy Sun will feature two 900-metric-ton Huisman Heavy Lift Mast Cranes which will make her geared for the handling of heavy cargoes all over the world. With her high crane pedestals and lengthened jib she will have a lifting height only matched by her sister Happy Star in the worldwide fleet of heavy lift vessels.

BigLift Transports Two Siwertell CSU’

Earlier this month, BigLift Shipping’s Happy Dynamic successfully transported two 560 mt Siwertell Continuous Ship Unloaders (CSUs) from Chioggia, Italy, to Liverpool, UK. The CSUs are 35 m high and 24 m wide and, when in service, have a discharge capacity of 1,200 tons / hour. Both were loaded completely assembled – ready to be taken into service after discharge. The CSUs were loaded in a tandem lift operation by Happy Dynamic’s two 400 mt cranes. To reduce forces on the machines during the sea voyage, the CSUs were placed on Happy Dynamic’s tween deck and were lashed thoroughly using numerous wires as well as a pull bar system on the CSUs’ inlet. With the CSUs’ exceptional height the vessel sailed with open hatches.

Heavy Lift: Topside Module Delivered for Yadana Gas Field

SapuraAcergy awarded BigLift Shipping the transportation contract for a wellhead production topside module for the offshore Yadana gas field, off Myanmar. BigLift loaded the module in Ulsan, Korea, and transported it to the Yadana field, where SapuraAcergy’s S3000 would lift it off and install it onto its offshore foundation. Happy Star loaded the topside module of just under 1,000 metric tons with her two 900-metric-ton heavy lift mast cranes at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan.

Svitzer Takes Delivery of Two Damen ASD Tugs

CPP and special render recovery winches ensure superb performance. Svitzer, the leading global towage and salvage specialist, has taken delivery of two Damen ASD Tugs 3212 in the UK. The initial contract was signed at the Tugnology 2015 event, which took place in London in May. The vessels were built for stock at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam and arrived in Rotterdam in late October as part of a 22-vessel consignment on board BigLift Shipping’s heavy-lift vessel, Happy Star. Named the Svitzer Deben and Svitzer Kent respectively, the 32-metre vessels deliver 80 tonnes of bollard pull and are equipped with 2.8 metre controllable pitch propellers (CPP) and special render recovery winches. Kent has also been equipped with FiFi1 fire-fighting capabilities while the Deben has an aft winch.

Heavylift Vessel Brings 22 Damen Vessels to Rotterdam

BigLift Shipping’s heavy-lift vessel Happy Star arrived in the Port of Rotterdam bringing with her Damen’s largest transportation of stock vessels to date; a total of 22 vessels. Included in the Damen transport are two Fast Crew Suppliers 2610, one ASD Tug 2310, three ASD Tugs 2411 and three ASD Tugs 3212, all of which have been sold and will be delivered to clients upon arrival. Happy Sky Embarks on Maiden Voyage

BigLift Shipping said Happy Sky began her maiden voyave from Shanghai to Cape Lambert, Australia on Sunday July 28. She is transporting three large modules (1 x 935 mt / 1 x 818 mt / 1 x 777 mt) to be installed as a part of the Port B, Phase B project in Cape Lambert. This voyage is the first of four consecutive shipments. Happy Sky is the latest addition to BigLift Shipping’s fleet of Heavy Lift Vessels. She was built by Larsen & Toubro in India and features two 900 mt, Huisman built, Heavy Lift Mast Cranes with a lifting height of 40.9 above deck. Happy Sky is 155m long and has 18.680tdwt.

BigLift Shipping celebrated the name-giving of its new Heavy Lift Vessel Happy Sky. The ceremony has taken place at Huisman China’s new quay side in Zhangzhou, China, which was officially opened at the same time. The name-giving ceremony of the Happy Sky was performed by Ms. Erni Bartel, the partner of Joop Rodenburg, CEO of Huisman. Huisman and BigLift Shipping share a long history together in the design of heavy lift cranes and handling materials. Besides that, Huisman has been a valuable customer for many years.

Amarcon Receives Orders for Eleven OCTOPUS-Onboard Systems

Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, announced that it has received an order for in total eleven OCTOPUS-Onboard installations for Heavy Lift vessels from Cosco Heavy Transport and BigLift Shipping. The Cosco deal was closed after the heavy cargo transporter leased the portable OCTOPUS-Onboard system on several occasions. Cosco heavy transport operates a versatile fleet within the semi-submersible and project cargo transportation industry and provides her services across the globe.

Alfa Laval, Spliethoff Deal for Cleaner Ships

Alfa Laval signed a contract with Spliethoff, a leading player in the transport market. It covers the retrofit of a multiple inlet PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system on board one of Spliethoff’s vessels which operates mainly in the North European ECA area. Wärtsilä Powers Eleven Spliethoff Vessels

Wärtsilä has been awarded two large orders from the Spliethoff Group, headquarted in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The orders are for propulsion systems for eleven ships that the Spliethoff Group has ordered at the Ouhua Shipyard in Zhejiang, China. The Wärtsilä scope of delivery includes engines, propellers and efficiency rudders, as well as bow thrusters forming a complete integrated propulsion system for the ships. The new orders are for five 16,800 dwt Heavy-Lift vessels to be operated by BigLift Shipping, and six 12,500 dwt Multipurpose vessels.

Inmarsat Activates 5,000th FB Terminal

Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT) announced that it has activated the 5,000th FleetBroadband terminal. This figure represents commercially active SIM cards passing operational traffic. The 5,000 FleetBroadband terminals activated through Inmarsat’s global partner network make it the fastest adopted maritime service in the company’s 30-year history. The latest member of the FleetBroadband family, FB150, launched just 22 weeks ago, already has 500 terminals activated – a rate of adoption which is twice that of FB500 and FB250 at a similar period after launch. The 5,000th terminal was activated on Happy Rover, a 1997-build owned by Dutch company BigLift Shipping B.V., a member of the Spliethoff Group.

L&T in Talks for Shipbuilding Contract

India’s biggest engineering and construction firm, Larsen and Toubro Ltd, is in talks with a Dutch shipowner for a new building contract valued at more than $100 million according to the Wall Street Journal. New orders: Larsen and Toubro’s employees shift a 20-tonne ship part in the company’s shipbuilding yard in Hajira. L&T is negotiating with a Dutch shipowner for a new shipbuilding order. L&T is currently building eight ships valued at about Rs1,150 crore. These comprise six for RollDock and two from BigLift Shipping BV, also of the Netherlands. L&T launched its shipbuilding venture in May 2006 with an order for building four ships valued at Rs440 crore from the Rotterdam-based shipping firm Zadeko Ship Management CV (now known as RollDock BV).

L&T signs $ 94.9m Contract

Construction and engineering firm Larsen & Toubro Ltd. won a $94.9m shipbuilding contract from BigLift Shipping of the Netherlands. L&T said that it would construct two ships for the Dutch company at the shipyard in its engineering complex at Hazira in Gujarat. L &T, which had forayed into shipbuilding last year, currently builds ships with a displacement of up to 20,000 dead-weight MT (DWMT) and also plans to construct a shipbuilding yard for bigger vessels. Production of the ships is scheduled to commence in June 2008 and the vessels shall be delivered by March 2010. The18,680 dwt vessels measure 154.8 x 26.5 m.
