Blohm+Voss Strengthens Team

Blohm+Voss has appointed Jean-Gabriel Tridon as General Manager and Dieter Pladeck as Finance Director for its new maintenance and refit facility in La Ciotat in the south of France. The company has filled the two management positions only two weeks after winning the local tender of La Ciotat Shipyards for the setting up of the new site. In La Ciotat, Blohm+Voss will focus on the maintenance and refit of megayachts of over 80 meters in length. Blohm + Voss to Open Refit Facility for Megayachts

Blohm+Voss has announced  that it has won the tender for the set-up of a new maintenance and refit facility for megayachts in La Ciotat, in the South of France. The company will partner with “La Ciotat Shipyards” (managed by SEMIDEP-Ciotat), the local company in charge of the site development which is providing a large dry-dock and neighboring workshop premises embedded within the existing shipyard. Blohm+Voss will utilize this new facility in the heart of the Mediterranean to maintain and service megayachts over 80 meters in length. Operation is planned to start in November 2016.

Queen Mary 2 set for Extensive Blohm + Voss Refit

On May 27, at 8:00 PM, the Queen Mary 2 docked at Blohm+Voss at dry dock ELBE 17, well-known to the ocean liner. There, the flagship of the long-established British shipping company Cunard Line will undergo the largest refit program since being brought into service. It is the sixth time that the Queen Mary 2 docks at Blohm+Voss. A total of 50 new cabins are fitted or remodeled in line with this year’s master refit, 35 of them in the front section of deck 13. In addition, Blohm+Voss has prefabricated several steel deck sections with a total weight of approx. 200 tons that will also be installed on deck 13 by the shipyard’s specialists; furthermore, comprehensive modernizations in the hotel, entertainment and gastronomy areas of the ocean liner are part of the current construction schedule.

Europort’s Masterclasses in Leadership

Recognising that effective leadership and collaboration are fundamental elements in the future success of the maritime industry, Europort 2015 will feature a series of masterclasses as part of this year’s conference programme. Each masterclass will address the leadership challenges currently facing the industry across the areas of design, technology, efficiency and human capital. Domino’s recently made headlines with pizzas being delivered to doorsteps by drones. Google describes their self-driving car as ‘the realization of a science fiction dream’. There are a number of examples of autonomous vehicles on land and the technology themed masterclass sessions will delve into this hot topic and the effects it could have on the shipping industry.

Aggressive Superyacht Investment Pan for Blohm+Voss

Fred van Beers, the newly appointed CEO for Blohm+Voss, unveil details of an aggressive new investment plan in the superyacht sector. Over the next year, the company is restructuring some independent divisions under the same roof. It’s further offering lifetime warranties and monitoring equipment on all new builds. This plan has been prepared over the past few months in partnership with Star Capital and the Board of Directors. Beers will be implementing a number of noteworthy changes over the next 12 months to reinvigorate the superyacht sector of the historic Blohm + Voss shipyard. These changes are designed to ensure that the business is fully optimized and efficient in meeting the needs of the diverse marine markets in which the company operates.

Netherlands Maritime Technology Association Launched

The Netherlands Maritime Technology association has been officially launched on the international stage during the Holland Day at SMM on September 9. Sjef van Dooremalen, Chairman of Netherlands Maritime Technology, unveiled the new name onboard the LCF Zr. Ms. Evertsen in Hamburg to an audience of 250 guests. A new promo video about the Dutch maritime technological sector was also shown. On a national level, the association, company and foundation for the maritime technological sector have been operating under this new joint name since May 8, 2014.

Wärtsilä Restructures Ship Power Unit

Wärtsilä's Ship Power is in the process of reorganizing into five Ship Power Business Segments: Merchant, Offshore, Cruise & Ferry, Navy, and Special Vessels. The aim is to respond better to market requirements, in terms of value proposition and technology development, as well as to be prepared for market fluctuations. In announcing the new business structure Jaakko Eskola, Group Vice President, Ship Power, stated: "We are experiencing an unparalleled upturn in our industry, and we are enjoying record order intake levels. However, it is important that we continue to seek ways to further increase our competitive edge on the market. The rollout of the new model started on July 1, 2007 and will be fully set up by the end of the year.
