Wärtsilä to Manufacture Propellers at Zhenjiang CME, China

Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with Zhenjiang CME Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), to begin the manufacture of controllable pitch propellers (CP propellers) at the two companies' joint venture unit, Wärtsilä CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co Ltd, located in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. The inauguration of the new factory and the first deliveries are planned for the second quarter 2011. Wärtsilä CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co Ltd will invest $16.4m in a state-of-the-art facility for manufacturing CP propellers. The investment includes the construction of a new 8,000 m2 factory at the same location as the existing fixed pitch propellers (FP Propellers) factory.

Wärtsilä Reduces Manufacturing Footprint

Wärtsilä has analysed its manufacturing footprint as announced in October. To adjust to the fundamental changes in the market Wärtsilä plans to reduce its manufacturing capacity. Wärtsilä also plans to move the majority of its propeller production and auxiliary engine production to China, close to the main marine markets. The current propeller manufacturing in Drunen, and the component manufacturing DTS in Zwolle, both in The Netherlands, are planned to be closed. The Wärtsilä 20 generating set production in Vaasa Finland is planned to be closed and moved to China in order to stay competitive in this market. In the course of 2010 Wärtsilä plans to reduce approximately 1,400 jobs globally within the Group. Of these reductions 570 are planned to be in the Netherlands.

Dominis Engineering Wins Contract

Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has awarded a multi-year contract for the manufacture and supply of propeller blades for the Canadian Patrol Frigates (CPF) to Dominis Engineering Ltd. of Ottawa. The contract calls for the supply of two ship-sets, with an option for the third set, for a total of 30 propeller blades. Dominis IPMS (Integrated Propeller Manufacturing System) uses the company's proprietary technology for CNC milling of sculptured surfaces to final form. This manufacturing system is used in the production of propeller blades, monoblock propellers, hydraulic turbines, turbine blades and impellers. Wärtsilä to Start Propeller Manufacture in China

Wärtsilä will begin manufacturing propellers in China. Wärtsilä's wholly owned company Wärtsilä Propulsion and Zhenjiang CME Co. Ltd (CME), wholly owned by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), have today signed a contract to establish a joint venture company. The company will be 55%-owned by Wärtsilä and 45%-owned by CME and its name will be Wärtsilä-CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co. Ltd. "China's shipbuilding industry is growing rapidly and 15% of new ships are currently built in the country. China also is developing into a significant production country for ship equipment. The propeller manufacturing in China is Wärtsilä's first step in developing its production in this growing market", says Wärtsilä's President and CEO Ole Johansson.

Wärtsilä' Starts Prop Production in China

The joint venture company set up by Wärtsilä and CSSC (China State Shipbuilding Corporation) in China to design, manufacture and deliver Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) packages has officially started operating at the beginning of June 2004. The new company, called Wärtsilä-CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co. Ltd, is 55%-owned by Wärtsilä and 45%-owned by Zhenjiang CME Co. Ltd (CME), the latter being a wholly owned subsidiary of the CSSC. Wärtsilä NSD Is Back On Track, Engine Orders Up 41%

Metra's - parent company of Wärtsilä NSD - reported that its 2Q net sales were $663.6 million, comparable growth 19%. comparable growth was $19.5 million. A driving force has been Wärtsilä NSD, which boasts an orderbook up 41%, and intake of new orders up 79% on same period last year. Wärtsilä NSD posted an operating profit of $18.6 million, which is 3.6% of net sales. Wärtsilä NSD became a wholly owned subsidiary of Metra on February 29, 2000 when Metra acquired the 15.4% minority holding owned by Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani for nearly $100 million. The split-up of the Cummins Wärtsilä joint venture took place during February as well.

ZF Has New Products On The Way

At a strategic planning meeting hosted in Italy this month, ZF Marine CEO Roland Heil reaffirmed the marine group's intention to take a leadership role in developing advanced propulsion systems. Stephane Jacquemond, appointed last year to head up a new propulsion systems division, expects ZF Marine to introduce some dramatic new products. "We have gathered together the best talent this industry has to offer," he reported. Recent acquisitions and joint ventures have given ZF Marine a wider range of technical expertise and manufacturing capabilities. A joint venture with Fabio Buzzi's FB Design company and the foundation of ZF-Trimax to market surface-drive systems first signaled ZF Marine's intention to enter new markets.
