WinGD’s Dual-fuel 12X92DF Engine Gains BV Type Approval

UniSource Buys Gila River Power Station

UniSource Energy Services (UES), an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis Inc., has strengthened its generating portfolio and reduced its reliance on the wholesale energy market through the purchase of a share of the efficient natural gas-fired Gila River Power Station in Gila Bend. Under the terms of the purchase, UES subsidiary UNS Electric, Inc. and sister company Tucson Electric Power (TEP) acquired the 550-megawatt (MW) Gila River Power Station Power Block 3 from Gila River Power LLC for US$219 million. SF Bay Area Company Leads in NOX Reduction

When the State of California, long a leader in reducing air-pollution, announced the Carl Moyer Program to reduce NOx emissions, towboat owner Aaron Lind and his family decided to get on board. The program is supported by a one-time appropriation of $50 million dollars for the 2000/2001 fiscal year. A significant portion of this amount was allotted for Carl Moyer Program incentive grants, as a means to reduce emissions from heavy-duty engines. These grants cover the incremental cost of cleaner on-road, off-road, marine, locomotive and stationary agricultural pump engines, as well as forklifts and airport ground support equipment. Beginning in summer 1999, grants became available through participating air pollution control and air quality management districts grants.

Captain Bill III Repowers for Savings

On the first 24-hour charter trip this May 5, the repowered 110-ft.Capt. Bill III achieved speeds over 25 knots and used 240 gallons less fuel than with the old engines. The additional speed resulted largely from the increase in horsepower to 2,100 hp total generated at 2,100 rpm by the three six-cylinder, four-stroke Cummins KTA19 M4 engines. These replaced three 12-cylinder two stroke engines that produced a combined 1,740 hp at 2,300 rpm for a top speed around 22 knots. The fuel savings, that came in spite of approximately 20 percent increase in horsepower, results from the move to 4-cycle technology, reduced rpm and design efficiencies. The reduced rpm and fuel burn can also be expected to result in longer intervals between engine overhauls.

Waller To Design Largest

Houston based marine design company Waller Marine has been contracted to design the world's largest single power barge. The 220 MW barge mounted power plant utilizes a combined cycle technology, comprising four LM 6000 aero derivative gas turbines, with chilled air intakes, each coupled to a Once Through Steam Generator (OTSG). The steam generated from heat recovery drives a 55 MW steam turbine generator. Measuring 348 ft. (106 m) with a 180 ft. (55 m) breadth designed per ABS structural standards, the barge, which will be constructed in Korea will be dry towed to the west coast of India, where it will supply power to the grid.
