NYK to Install Energy-Saving Technology on LNG-fueled Car Carriers

Japanese shipping company NYK has unveiled plans to install a Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) system on LNG-fueled car carriers in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut fuel costs.NYK said it will include a VCR system on LNG-fueled car carriers to be built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery in 2026.The system is said to be able to adjust the air compression ratio in the engine combustion chamber to an optimal balance according…

Engine Air Compression System Boosts Fuel Efficiency 3-6%

NYK will install a variable compression ratio system (VCR system) on two large LNG-fueled coal carriers to be built at Oshima Shipbuilding. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025, and NYK reports this will be the first time for VCR systems to be installed on vessels, including existing vessels that use heavy fuel oil as their main fuel.The VCR system can adjust the air compression ratio in the engine combustion chamber to an optimal balance according to engine power and LNG fuel properties.

MAN Unveils New Dual-fuel Four-stroke Engine

MAN Energy Solutions has announced the launch of its MAN 49/60DF engine type at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg. The latest addition to its four-stroke engine portfolio, the dual-fuel engine is capable of running on LNG, diesel and HFO as well as a number of more sustainable fuels including biofuel blends and synthetic natural gas. Matson Navigation Inc. and MAN Energy Solutions signed a contract for the retrofit of the main engine aboard its 2018-built containership Daniel K. Inouye. WinGD Debuts Compact On-engine Emissions Solution for X-DF Portfolio

Swiss marine power company WinGD has introduced an on-engine version of its iCER system, enabling the emissions reduction technology to be installed without impact on engine footprint. iCER is the first X-DF2.0 technology introduced to further boost the emissions performance and efficiency of the dual-fuel X-DF two-stroke engine series. X-DF engines running on LNG already offer a more than 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in air pollution compared to fuel oil. The addition of iCER delivers a 50% reduction of methane slip in gas mode.

COSCO Takes Delivery of LNG Dual-fuel VLCC

A newly delivered very large crude carrier (VLCC) is said to be the world's first capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).The Yuan Rui Yang was handed over on Monday at China's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) for shipping giant COSCO.Classed by China Classification Society (CCS), the 333-meter-long vessel will be operated by COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation Company. MAN Energy Solutions announced that it will offer its proprietary EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system as an emissions solution for its new, low-speed ME-GA engine, the Otto-cycle variant of its established ME-GI dual-fuel engine. Imabari Shipbuilding Group's Tadotsu Shipyard in Japan has launched a new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled car carrier vessel for compatriot shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. Total Lubmarine's Talusia Universal Gains NOL from WinGD

Total Lubmarine’s Talusia Universal (BN57) has received a No Objection Letter (NOL) from WinGD for all fuels (liquid and gas) with a sulphur content 0.00%S - 1.50%S.The NOL was awarded with no restrictions following the successful completion of two rigorous tests carried out on two different vessels fitted with W6X72 engines.The tests were conducted on split engines comparing Talusia Universal with a BN40 reference Cylinder Lube Oil (CLO). Jiangsu Zhenjiang Delivers Dual Fuel Tug

Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard in China has delivered Yong Gang Xiao Tuo 60, a dual fuel RAstar 3800-DF tug, to Ningbo Zhoushan Port Company Ltd.According to a release from the naval architectural firm Robert Allan, this first ever RAstar 3800-DF tug is the 10th custom designed vessel by Robert Allan Ltd. in close collaboration with Ningbo Port Company. The vessel is also the first Robert Allan Ltd. designed dual-fuel tug to operate in China.The new RAstar 3800-DF tug is powered by a pair of Niigata 8L28AHX-DF dual-fuel engines, each rated for 2,389 kW at 800 rpm, and driving Kongsberg US 255 CP 2.8 meter diameter controllable pitch Z-drives. Bollard pull recorded on trials met all expectations and is certified as 80.3 tonnes ahead.

Inside Ishin, the LNG-Fueled Tugboat

In May 2017, MOL decided to build an LNG-fueled tugboat that would be operated by Nihon Tug-Boat Co., Ltd. It was built by Kanagawa Dockyard Co., Ltd., has dual-fueled engines from Yanmar Co., Ltd., and runs on LNG supplied by Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. The LNG-fueled tugboat, called Ishin, was delivered in February of 2019, and was featured in the December 2019 edition of Maritime Reporter & Engineering News as a Great Ships of 2019.Ishin is Japan’s first tugboat built to conform to the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code).

AET, a petroleum tanker owner and operator, has named its newest vessels, two of the world's first LNG Dual-Fuel Dynamic Positioning Shuttle Tankers (DPSTs). Building the Most Powerful Otto Cycle Engine in the World

WinGD has released a time-lapse video of the build of a 12X92DF engine, built by CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD) in Lingang, Shanghai.This twelve-cylinder version of the 92cm bore X-DF dual fuel engine from WinGD, is set to be the largest and most powerful Otto cycle gas and dual-fuel engine ever built and will bring a new level of environmental sustainability to the containership segment.The engine build has taken approximately 3,125 person days, which totals to 25,000-man hours. The engine weighs over 2,100 tons and has received parts from more than 15 countries.

PSA Marine Takes Delivery of Dual Fuel Tug
