All Clear for Construction Start of Virginia’s 2.6GW Offshore Wind Farm

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued the final air quality permit for Dominion Energy’s 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project located off the coast of Virginia Beach in the United States.Issued on April 9 following a 30-day public comment period, the permit authorizes the construction and operation of the largest offshore wind project in the U.S.

BAE Systems Wins $197 Million Contract for USS Wasp Modernization

BAE Systems said Tuesday it has received a $197.4 million contract from the U.S. Navy to drydock and perform maintenance and modernization work aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1). This is the second time in four years that the company has performed significant work on board the Wasp to sustain its warfighting capability.Under the new contract, BAE Systems’ Norfolk, Va. shipyard will begin working aboard the 843-foot-long USS Wasp in February 2021, performing hull, tank and mechanical work.

CAGTC Members Win Big in TIGER VI

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced Friday that 72 projects will receive a total of $600 million from the sixth round of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. Of these, 12 Coalition for America’s Gateway and Trade Corridor (CAGTC) member projects were awarded a total of $135 million for projects with full costs exceeding $490 million. One in three grant dollars, just over $198 million, was awarded to 25 projects supporting freight movement. Compared to previous rounds, this represents a decrease in the amount of money and total awards given to freight relative to other types of projects.

Many Leadership Changes at W&O

W&O, a global supplier to the marine and marine offshore markets for pipe, valves and fittings, valve automation and engineered solutions, announced several changes to leadership at its Gulf Coast branches, as well as at its offices in Charleston, Norfolk and Fort Lauderdale. Vince Rodomista, a graduate of Kings Point with a degree in Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation, joins W&O as General Manager of the Houston branch. He spent the first seven years of his professional career as an engineer and deck officer onboard a variety of vessels.

Shipping Corporation and Two Engineers Convicted in ‘Magic Pipe’ Case

Diana Shipping Services S.A., a Panamanian corporation headquartered in Greece, Ioannis Prokakis and Antonios Boumpoutelos, both citizens of Greece, were convicted after an 12-day bench trial on charges related to the illegal discharge of waste oil and oil-contaminated waste water from the M/V Thetis, a cargo vessel operated by Diana Shipping Services, announced Robert G. Dreher, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, Neil H. MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Otis E. Harris, Jr., Special Agent in Charge, Coast Guard Investigative Service, Chesapeake Region, and David G. McLeod, Jr., Special Agent in Charge of EPA’s criminal enforcement program for the Middle Atlantic States.

Transport Secretary LaHood Names Maritime Industry Advisory Panel

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood today announced the appointment of 29 members to the new Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council (MTSNAC), established to advise the Department on matters relating to marine transportation. “Shifting some of our freight from the highways to open inland waterways is a fuel-efficient, cost-effective way to move goods and reduce roadway congestion,” said Secretary LaHood. The Department will task the MTSNAC with developing recommendations on establishing new marine highway services and port infrastructure development, among other issues. “The experience brought to bear by this diverse panel is impressive,” said Maritime Administrator David Matsuda. “These maritime experts have a lot to contribute.

Colonna’s Shipyard, 1000c Mobile Boat Hoist

Marine Travelift Inc. delivered the world’s largest mobile boat hoist to Colonna’s Shipyard in December 2009. The new 1000C, capable of lifting 1,000 tons (2,200,000 pounds), is changing the way this Norfolk, Virginia-based shipyard approaches its business. Colonna’s Shipyard is located on the deep-water, mid-Atlantic Port of Norfolk, it features a 17,200-ton floating drydock, a 2,800-ton floating drydock and two marine railways. Such railways and drydocks have been the standard technology for handling large vessels that need repair, overhaul or conversion work out of the water.

Technology Propels Navigators into 21st Century Training

With a $3.5 million price tag, the Norfolk Navigation, Seamanship, and Shiphandling Trainer (NSST) opened June 9 after a ribbon cutting ceremony presided over by Rear Adm. Kevin Quinn, commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT). From a plain, nondescript brick building at Naval Station Norfolk, Sailors can now travel to foreign ports around the globe, without ever even crossing a quarterdeck. In its first successful week of operation, a brand new, state-of-the-art shiphandling simulator is proving to be an invaluable asset for improving warfighting readiness and safety among Norfolk-based Sailors, explained Lt. Cmdr. Jim Quaresimo, a training officer with SURFLANT.

Twenty seven ports were recognized today for exemplary projects and initiatives at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) annual Awards Luncheon, held in conjunction with AAPA’s 2003 annual convention in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. Winners were announced in the association’s national Communications, Information Technology, Environmental Improvement and Facilities Engineering Competitions. Washburn & Doughty Delivers Eleanor F. Moran

On March 12, 2007, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered the Eleanor F. Moran, a 92 x 32-ft., 5100 hp, Z-Drive Firefighting Tug, to Moran Towing of New Canaan, Connecticut. The vessel is operating at the port of Norfolk, Virginia. Eleanor F. Moran is classed ABS Maltese Cross A1 Towing, Maltese Cross AMS, with Escort Notation, Towing Service, Maltese Cross A1 Fire Fighting Vessel, Class 1. The Firefighting 1 classification requires two monitors to each produce 5,280 gpm for a distance of 394 ft. at a height of 148 ft., as well as a deluge system and the ability to sustain firefighting operations for a minimum of 24 consecutive hours.

MOL Establishes New East Coast Service

MOL will soon be initiating a new direct service between the East Coast of South America and the U.S. MOL will be replacing its current AXL Service with the Americas Container Express (ACX) Service. The ACX will improve port coverage on the East Coast Americas trade by adding calls at Buenos Aires (Argentina), Salvador (Brazil), and Baltimore (Maryland, U.S.). The new ACX service will make its first northbound call to Brazil in mid-April. MOL will phase out the AXL service, which will make its last northbound call at Santos on April 13, 2007, allowing for a seamless transition to the new ACX.

Maritime Interoperability Demonstration Conducted

The Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP) in partnership with Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Preparedness Directorate, United States Department of Transportation (US DOT), Maritime Administration (MARAD) and an array of other maritime industry organizations conducted a multi-port preparedness identity management (PIM) exercise on July 20, 2006. The “Maritime Interoperability Demonstration (MID)” was an exercise of the First Responder electronic identity/attribute trust model being spearheaded by Tom Lockwood, Director of National Capital Region Coordination (NCRC) within the DHS Preparedness Directorate. Cadets Stranded After Training Boat Breaks Down

Boston.com reported that more than 500 cadets from Massachusetts Maritime Academy were stranded in Virginia after their training ship experienced mechanical problems en route to Europe. The Enterprise was escorted into the port of Norfolk, Va., last weekend. The federal government, which owns the Enterprise, has spent $38 million on renovations to the vessel over the past several years. The planned European trip is the second for the Enterprise since it arrived at Mass. Maritime, which uses and maintains the ship under an agreement with the federal government.
